Arbitrary-order sliding mode-based robust control algorithm for the developing artificial pancreas mechanism

In Diabetes Mellitus, the pancreas remains incapable of insulin administration that leads to hyperglycaemia, an escalated glycaemic concentration, which may stimulate many complications. To circumvent this situation, a closed-loop control strategy is much needed for the exogenous insulin infusion in diabetic patients. This closed-loop structure is often termed as an artificial pancreas that is generally established by the employment of different feedback control strategies. In this work, the authors have proposed an arbitrary-order sliding mode control approach for development of the said mechanism. The term, arbitrary, is exercised in the sense of its applicability to any n-order controllable canonical system. The proposed control algorithm affirms the finite-time effective stabilisation of the glucose-insulin regulatory system, at the desired level, with the alleviation of sharp fluctuations. The novelty of this work lies in the sliding manifold that incorporates indirect non-linear terms. In addition, the necessary discontinuous terms are filtered-out once before its employment to the plant, i.e. diabetic patient. The robustness, in the presence of external disturbances, i.e. meal intake is confirmed via rigorous mathematical stability analysis. In addition, the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is ascertained by comparing the results with the standard literature.

This study describes the design of an output based controller for a 4-DOF (three dimensional position x-y-z as well as yaw angle) Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) using a mixed structure of a backstepping like control form and a Robust Exact Differentiator (RED). The class of AUV system allowed to control the AUV's vertical coordinate independently. To adjust the x-y plane trajectories, the angular velocity with respect to the z coordinate was used as a virtual control action. The controller was designed to solve the tracking problem of the AUV to a desired reference trajectory. The controller was originally designed under the assumption of using the whole state to construct the closed-loop structure. As the differentiator converged in finite-time, then the controller was adjusted to use the velocity information obtained by the RED. The tracking performance obtained by the proposed controller was evaluated by tracking two reference trajectories. An acceptable performance was obtained by the application of the mixed controller in terms of the mean-square error of tracking problem. A set of simulations with different reference trajectories was used to evaluate the implementation aspects of the solution suggested in this study.

With the recent advances in stereoscopic display technologies, there is a growing demand for designing efficient stereo image compression techniques. For this reason, a great attention should be paid to the disparity/estimation process used to generate the residual image. In this paper, we propose to improve the disparity compensation process in a typical closed-loop-based stereo image coding scheme. A new formulation of this process, based on a block dependent dictionary, is developed. More specifically, the main idea aims to link together the disparities yielding similar compensations and assign a common disparity candidate to each subset of disparities. Experimental results have shown the interest of the proposed method in terms of bitrate saving and quality of reconstruction.

We study a class of mean field control problems for a large population of linear Gaussian quadratic agents, coupled via their partial observations. The measurements interference model is assumed to depend only on the empirical mean of agents states. In addition, a structural assumption is made on the agents' controls which are constrained to be linear constant feedbacks on a locally based state estimate. We investigate the ability of such a constrained structure to stabilize individual agent systems as the number of agents increases to infinity. Previous work has shown that a naive approach, whereby the coupling interference term is considered deterministic in the limit as is usually assumed in mean field approaches, results in poor local estimation results and consequently severely limits the stabilization abilities of the closed loop structure. Instead, the finite population optimal decentralized estimation problem is studied, and a non-recursive optimal estimation scheme is presented and tested numerically. This scheme can become a solid basis for deriving asymptotic local state estimate approximations.

Kalman filter for parametric fault detection: an internal model principle-based approach

The paramount importance of fault detection (FD) in complex engineering systems has undoubtedly been the main driver behind the development of a plethora of techniques in the FD area. In this study, the authors propose an internal model principle-based Kalman filter (IMP-KF) structure for use in the detection of parametric faults. The authors show that the closed-loop structure of the IMP-KF is indeed a necessary and sufficient condition for generating residuals upon which the FD process hinges. They advocate a residual generator structure similar to that used in the standard Kalman filtering (KF), and judiciously exploit the non-robustness to model mismatch of the proposed IMP-KF scheme to detect faults in the presence of noise and disturbances. With no model mismatch, the KF residual's whiteness is exploited to derive a composite hypothesis testing that accounts for a low probability for false alarm and a high probability of correct decision for various reference inputs. The proposed scheme was successfully evaluated on both simulated and physical systems.

Use of the novel technique of analytical ultracentrifugation with fluorescence detection system identifies a 77S monosomal translation complex

A fundamental problem in proteomics is the identification of protein complexes and their components. We have used analytical ultracentrifugation with a fluorescence detection system (AU-FDS) to precisely and rapidly identify translation complexes in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Following a one-step affinity purification of either poly(A)-binding protein (PAB1) or the large ribosomal subunit protein RPL25A in conjunction with GFP-tagged yeast proteins/RNAs, we have detected a 77S translation complex that contains the 80S ribosome, mRNA, and components of the closed-loop structure, eIF4E, eIF4G, and PAB1. This 77S structure, not readily observed previously, is consistent with the monosomal translation complex. The 77S complex abundance decreased with translational defects and following the stress of glucose deprivation that causes translational stoppage. By quantitating the abundance of the 77S complex in response to different stress conditions that block translation initiation, we observed that the stress of glucose deprivation affected translation initiation primarily by operating through a pathway involving the mRNA cap binding protein eIF4E whereas amino acid deprivation, as previously known, acted through the 43S complex. High salt conditions (1M KCl) and robust heat shock acted at other steps. The presumed sites of translational blockage caused by these stresses coincided with the types of stress granules, if any, which are subsequently formed.
