The pioneering research on message passing for Java (MPJ) which started after 1995 provided a crucially important framework and programming environment for parallel and distributed computing with Java. This framework resulted in an industry standard specification and a novel MPJ-based hierarchical development methodology for a new generation of large-scale distributed systems. The invention of a novel component-based model and methodology for rapid distributed software development and execution based on the MPJ work and achievements are the core contributions presented in this paper. Based on the high-performance Java component-based model, concepts and research results, grid, cloud, and extreme-scale computing represent a fundamental shift in the delivery of information technology services that has permanently changed the computing landscape.

Many of the grid compute resources (CPU cycles,network bandwidths, computing power, processor times, and software)exist as non-storable commodities, which we call grid computecommodities (gcc) and are distributed geographically acrossorganizations. These organizations have dissimilar resourcecompositions and usage policies, which makes pricing grid resourcesand guaranteeing their availability a challenge. Severalinitiatives (Globus, Legion, Nimrod/G) have developed variousframeworks for grid resource management. However, there has been avery little effort in pricing the resources. In this thesis, wepropose financial option based model for pricing grid resources bydevising three research threads: pricing the gcc as a problem ofreal option, modeling gcc spot price using a discrete timeapproach, and addressing uncertainty constraints in the provisionof Quality of Service (QoS) using fuzzy logic. We used gridSim, asimulation tool for resource usage in a grid to experiment and testour model. To further consolidate our model and validate ourresults, we analyzed usage traces from six real grids from acrossthe world for which we priced a set of resources. We designed aPrice Variant Function (PVF) in our model, which is a fuzzy valueand its application attracts more patronage to a grid that has moreresources to offer and also redirect patronage from a grid that isvery busy to another grid. Our experimental results show that theapplication of the PVF has helped achieve equilibrium between userssatisfaction measured as QoS and recovery of the infrastructureinvestment made by the providers. In the absence of pricingbenchmarks, we setup Commodity Base Prices (CBP) and thenintegrated our PVF and CBP with gridSim to price grid computeresources. In summary, this thesis provides the design of a modelto price grid compute resources using financial options theory. Themodel achieves mutual benefit for users and providers in the gridenvironment.
