Short-term solar power forecasting considering cloud coverage and ambient temperature variation effects

The use of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems as green renewable sources for electricity generation in modern power networks is steadily increasing. One of the problems with using PV units in developing countries and small companies is access to a simple model to assess the short-time output of a solar cell. For example, a robust model that is capable of analyzing cloud variations and ambient temperature (important factors impacting the PV output) to assess short-term PV output would be very helpful. This article proposes a new methodology to assess the impacts of these factors on the hourly output power of a PV system. Our results showed that the proposed model has the ability to assess PV output by using the hourly data of cloud and ambient temperature change. To validate the model, the output was compared to results of measurements from PV systems installed in Sanandaj and Rasht cities located in North-West (latitude 35.31 and longitude 47.00) and North (latitude 37.28 and longitude 49.58) Iran, respectively. Also, the standardized root-mean-square error method (nRMSE) was used to validate the high accuracy of the proposed method. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

ASTER cloud coverage Assessment and Mission Operations Analysis Using Terra/MODIS cloud Mask Products

Since the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument cannot detect clouds accurately for snow-covered or nighttime images due to a lack of spectral bands, Terra/MODIS cloud mask (MOD35) products have been alternatively used in cloud assessment for all ASTER images. In this study, we evaluated ASTER cloud mask images generated from MOD35 products and used them to analyze the mission operations of ASTER. In the evaluation, ASTER cloud mask images from different MOD35 versions (Collections 5, 6, and 6.1) showed a large discrepancy in low- or high-latitude areas, and the rate of ASTER scenes with a high uncertain-pixel rate (>= 30%) showed to be 2.2% in daytime and 12.0% in nighttime. In the visual evaluation with ASTER browse images, about 2% of cloud mask images showed some problems such as mislabeling and artifacts. In the mission operations analysis, the cloud avoidance function implemented in the ASTER observation scheduler showed a decrease in the mean cloud coverage (MCC) and an increase in the rate of clear scenes by 10% to 15% in each. Although 19-year-old time-series of MCC in five areas showed weather-related fluctuations such as the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), they indicated a small percent reduction in MCC by enhancement of the cloud avoidance function in April 2012. The global means of the number of clear ASTER scenes were 15.7 and 6.6 scenes in daytime and nighttime, respectively, and those of the success rate were 33.3% and 40.4% in daytime and nighttime, respectively. These results are expected to contribute not only to the ASTER Project but also to other optical sensor projects.

This paper proposes a method of modeling and simulation for estimation of the fraction cloud cover into the dispatch of MicroGrids based in Genetic Algorithm. The main objective is to investigate the operational conditions of photovoltaic plants under the effect of cloud cover in a window of time in an interval of 1 minute or less. To verify the influence of the percentage of cloud coverage, it evaluates the influence of climatic variables, which represent the constraints of the objective function of the system, and the photovoltaic generation capacity at each time interval. The effect of cloud behavior uncertainty, study area energy demand and real-time generation lead to optimization through meta-heuristic to the optimum state of the system. The final evaluation of the study led to the observation of a considerable effect of cloud cover, even in a system with low penetration of photovoltaic plants, the fluctuations in energy generation started to present themselves in a more realistic way especially when cloud coverage is more intense. In this case, the constraints on the objective function influence considerably the difference between the energy generated without the effect of the cloud cover and the resulting energy taking into account the effective percentage of the cloud cover of the study area.

Variability of surface ozone with cloud coverage over Kolkata, India

Critical analysis of experimental surface ozone data and cloud coverage is reported over Kolkata during the period January 2011 to December 2011. Significant relationship between these two parameters is observed. Analysis shows that the trend of surface ozone concentration and cloud coverage follow opposite tendency. Some exceptional observations are also reported. Apart from this, seasonal variation of surface ozone with columnar ozone concentration, NO2 and temperature is also examined in relation with cloud cover to obtain a possible explanation of this type of variation.

Climate change has been affecting human life since more than a decade ago. IEEE GRSS through IEEE GRSS Student Grand Challenge program has gathered students from several universities including Telkom University and Kyushu Institute of Technology to develop a CubeSat payload for climate change monitoring mission. Both teams were working on the development of the experimental remote sensing payload that is integrated with an on-board classification system. The payload is equipped with a small serial camera and two microcontrollers for controlling and for applying the classification algorithm. The ultimate target of this payload is detecting cloud coverage in the images. It is an indication of environmental change. This project has yielded a payload called Locana payload. It brings an Arducam OV5642 and two microcontrollers ATSAMD21 and SMT32F7 as the camera controller and cloud classification processor consecutively. This project has given a priceless educational experience for both teams, they were separated geographically but they were working on the same PCB board. The hardware and software design and integration have been carried out utilizing online meetings and remote access due to the pandemic.

Exploring the untapped potential of solar photovoltaic energy at a smart campus: Shadow and cloud analyses

Solar energy is abundant, and technological advances have made solar energy systems more affordable than ever before. Using photovoltaic (PV) systems could significantly reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and facilitate sustainable energy uses. Solar power utilities, such as self-compacting disposal bins could be used to enhance waste management processes. This is particularly important in Canada, where $3.3 billion was spent on waste management systems in 2016. In this study, solar irradiance and climatic conditions at eight locations on a University campus in Regina, Saskatchewan, are studied. Results suggest that solar utilities with automatically adjusting PV receivers could increase energy capture between 18.7 - 27.5%. Temporally, solar irradiance was similar in June and July, but lower in August. Statistical analysis found that some locations tended to be more susceptible to shadow effects. The results highlight the importance of spatial allocations of these small smart disposal bin systems. Regression analysis found that temperature was the most significant factor when relating climate to solar irradiance. The use of smart disposal bins fits well with the University's 2020-2025 Strategic Plan of reduction in ecological footprint.

Climate change has occurred as a result of human activities. It can trigger unexpected disasters such as floods or drought. Further severe events may be avoided by monitoring climate change. A method to do that is monitoring the cloud coverage in some areas. In this paper, the development of a CubeSat payload that can monitor cloud coverage is presented. It contains a COTS camera module, microcontrollers, and a cloud classification algorithm. This payload is a joint research between Telkom University and Kyushu Institute of Technology under IEEE GRSS 2nd Student Grand Challenge. This payload has been implemented and tested and the result is the payload able to capture images in a long period and classify the cloud feature of each of them. Currently, it has reached the flight model stage and is ready to get further space environmental tests.

The automatization of meteorological measurements at airports has been a great success, but there are still issues with variables such as visibility and cloud coverage/height, that are even more pronounced at night. Visibility sensors and ceilometers are usually unable to achieve the accuracy and complexity demonstrated by human observers, especially in dynamic and heterogeneous meteorological situations. Our solution enables to observe prevailing visibility and cloud coverage/height by means of a camera-based observation system. We present an implementation for human observations from a remote center that allows for an observer to report meteorological conditions remotely, only using images from cameras installed at the airport. The basic concept of the remote observer was developed and validated within a SESAR project Pj - 05. The validation confirmed that correct estimation of the prevailing visibility, cloud coverage/height by automated sensors alone are inadequate; however, the camera-aided remote human approach to observations seems to be a promising supplement to eliminate the sensors’ deficiencies, in terms of the quality (e.g., high quality camera records; no more point measurements), objectivity (e.g., database of archived weather situations) and efficiency (e.g., no need to have an observer physically present at the airport)

Integrating and operating PV in a system-efficient way is the key to increasing penetration levels to evolve toward a more sustainable and clean energy system. Reliable generation forecasting is the solution to tackle fluctuations in PV power generation and its negative effects on power systems and energy markets. clouds play a key role in solar power, so cloud detection is important in PV power generation forecast. A color-based cloud detection algorithm is proposed in this paper. It considers 12 different color channels together with the K-means algorithm to detect clouds in sky images from an All-Sky Camera. The result of the proposed method has been compared to both classic and state-of-the-art methods. The experimental results show that the proposed approach has better performance in comparison to state-of-the-art methods.

Climate and land-use change continue to pose major threats to global rapid declines in biodiversity and ecosystem functions impacting natural system's resilience and capacity for the provision of ecosystems services. Kilimanjaro Mountain National Park, a cloud tropical montane forest was specifically designated to protect the only free-standing highest mountain in the world. In ensuring long-term protection of this high biodiverse tropical montane forest park, consistent ecological monitoring, including field measurements, is of paramount importance. This study provides a state-of-the-art remote sensing method contribution in the conservation efforts carried out by park staff for protecting this unique national park in the tropics. Our method demonstrates the automatic calculation of derived vegetation indices from Sentinel-2 data of the European Satellite Agency, using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as an example. The Sentinel-2 satellite mission provides data for consistent and long-term biodiversity monitoring to complement the in-situ observations by focusing on specific areas of interests in and outside the park ecosystems. Our study uses an area in the western edge of the park as an example, which became part of the Kilimanjaro Mountain National Park in 2008 (the "Half-mile strip"). We demonstrate how to automatically download and preprocess Sentinel-2 data for a particular study area and time period, as well as how to calculate various vegetation indices while taking into account the specific cloud coverage in the satellite images for the area in focus. We developed and provide processing routines in the programming environment R, which can easily be adopted to any study area for automatically generating similar outcomes.
