clusterpatterninterface (cluspi) [6] is an original 2D encoding and a related technology for direct point-and-click interfaces. It allows determining the objects printed on a surface pointed out by the user. The surface is covered by a layer of code composed of tiny dots, which blends with the original surface texture. In practice, however, some of the dots of the code may be damaged or obscured, which creates decoding challenges. In this work we develop theoretical solutions to some of the challenges related to decoding noisy patterns.

In this work we outline previous implementations of multilingual multimedia dictionaries and discuss possibilities for adding new functionalities and expanding their coverage. Independently developed sign language dictionary resources are further explored and considered for inclusion in an integrated multilingual multimedia dictionary with video support. Print based interfaces for direct access to digital content are implemented and a novel concept for dynamic linking to printed documents based on mapping of printed and digital content is proposed. Printed texts in different languages and language independent images are used as interface components for addressing diverse multimedia content including sign language and lip reading multimedia resources.

Since the 80s, when the computer mouse was first invented, point-and-click functionality became widely adopted, in particular, for work with images and GUIs. It would be useful to provide such functionality for printed materials, as well. A direct point-and-click functionality should not require tablet-like devices;but should rather use an embedded marking which defines a coordinate system within the image. An original approach and related technology for direct interface;known as clusterpatterninterface (cluspi), was proposed [12]. It is based on an unobtrusive layer of the image defining a coordinate system, a camera-based pointing device;and decoding software. cluspi. technology was invented and patented by one of the authors of this paper. Here we present the theoretical (mathematical) foundations of the methods developed. We also describe some theoretical challenges and propose solutions to them.

We propose and discuss a novel method for enhancing books and other printed materials with layers of digital data blended with their page content. In document digitizing a patented clusterpatterninterface (cluspi (R)) is used for providing orientation and position feedback that establishes connections with an electronic multimedia dictionary employing pictures, multilingual word explanations, and pronunciation samples. The work is mainly oriented to young children and aims to enhance their reading comprehension and to develop their language learning skills. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
