Estimating accurate high-dimensional transformations remains very challenging, especially in a clinical setting. In this paper, we introduce a multiscale parameterization of deformations to enhance registration and atlas estimation in the large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping framework. Using the Haar wavelet transform, a multiscale representation of the initial velocity fields is computed to optimize transformations in a coarse-to-fine fashion. This additional layer of spatial regularization does not modify the underlying model of deformations. As such, it preserves the original kernel Hilbert space structure of the velocity fields, enabling the algorithm to perform efficient gradient descent. Numerical experiments on several datasets, including abnormal fetal brain images, show that compared to the original algorithm, the coarse-to-fine strategy reaches higher performance and yields template images that preserve important details while avoiding unrealistic features. This highly versatile strategy can easily be applied to other mathematical frameworks for almost no additional computational cost.

A coarse-to-fine data fitting algorithm for irregularly spaced data based on boundary-adapted adaptive tensor-product semi-orthogonal spline-wavelets has been proposed in Castano and Kunoth, 2003. This method has been extended in Castano and Kunoth, 2005 to include regularization in terms of Sobolev and Besov norms. In this paper, we develop within this least-squares approach some statistical robust estimators to handle outliers in the data. Our wavelet scheme yields a numerically fast and reliable way to detect outliers.

A shot presents a contiguous action recorded by an uninterrupted camera operation and frames within a shot keep spatio-temporal coherence. Segmenting a serial video stream file into meaningful shots is the first pass for the task of video analysis, content-based video understanding. In this paper, a novel scheme based on improved two-dimensional entropy is proposed to complete the partition of video shots. Firstly, shot transition candidates are detected using a two-pass algorithm: a coarse searching pass and a fine searching pass. Secondly, with the character of two-dimensional entropy of the image, correctly detected transition candidates are further classified into different transition types whereas those falsely detected shot breaks are distinguished and removed. Finally, the boundary of gradual transition can be precisely located by merging the characters of two-dimensional entropy of the image into the gradual transition. A large number of video sequences are used to test our system performance and promising results are obtained.

In this paper, we present a novel approach to the problem of curve alignment, which measures and matches the similarity of two curves. Our method extracts curve features with high priorities given to salient and general features, and therefore leads to a satisfied result that meets human being's perceptions. We investigate the bimorphism in the level of subsegment correspondences to ensure symmetric mapping. A solution to closed curve alignment is also given. Finally, the coarse-to-fine aligning algorithm is introduced to match curves under different resolutions. The experiments showed satisfying and approving results, that our approach can capture the curve features and align them properly.
