Ensuring the correctness of code coverage profilers is crucial, given the widespread adoption of code coverage for various software engineering tasks. Existing validation techniques, such as differential testing and metamorphic testing, have shown effectiveness in uncovering bugs in coverage profilers. However, these techniques have limitations as they primarily rely on homogeneous sources, i.e., different coverage profilers or the profilers themselves, for validation. In this paper, we propose Decov, a novel heterogeneous testing technique, to validate coverage profilers using the information provided by debuggers as a heterogeneous source. coverage profilers record execution counts for each source line in the program, while debuggers monitor hit counts for each source line when running the program in debug mode. Our key insight is that the execution counts obtained from coverage profilers should align with the hit counts monitored by debuggers, without conflicts. Decov constructs multiple heterogeneous relations and utilizes them to uncover bugs in coverage profilers. Through experiments on Gcov and LLVM-cov, two widely used code coverage profilers, we discovered 21 new bug reports, with 19 of them directly confirmed by developers. Notably, developers have resolved 5 bugs in the latest trunk version. Decov serves as a simple yet effective coverage profiler validator and offers a complementary approach to existing techniques.

Agile software development deviates from the traditional and plan-based approaches to software engineering as its iterative cycles embrace changes in software requirements. Test-Driven Development (TDD) and Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) are techniques that have been recently adopted by the software industry and have evolved from agile practices. These techniques aim at improving both the quality of the delivered software and the developers' productivity. They are several studies that have been conducted on TDD in both academic and industry settings with however only a few on BDD. While TDD and BDD have both become popular, many organizations and developers still do not understand the differences between these concepts or where they overlap. The aim of this paper is to assess the effectiveness of these two approaches in terms of external code quality, internal code quality and developers' productivity. To understand the weaknesses and strengths of each of these methods, a literature review was first performed. An experiment was then carried out in an industry setting to observe the effectiveness of TDD and BDD on a number of subjects. Our results showed that both techniques indeed increased the external quality of the delivered product. However, a decrease in productivity and internal quality were noted when BDD was used compared to TDD which might be due to the additional steps involved in BDD.

Multi-objective optimization deals with conflicting objectives. A multi-objective problem is determined to find acceptable solution for all conflicting objectives based on the concept of Pareto-Optimality. This paper focuses automatic test data generation on the aspect of Multi Objective. One objective will be uniformly distribution and another is to maximize code. Multi-objective optimization incorporates decision making. This paper also covers non-dominance property to maintain sub-population of best fitness value. Generally, multi-objective optimization has two approaches, one is to decompose multi-objective into various single objective components, and another is to evolve Pareto-optimal set of solutions. Software Testing is a tedious, critical and expensive phase of software development, thus there is a need for automatic generation of uniformly distributed test cases over the provided range with maximum code coverage. Software system failure incur huge loss, to overcome this problem an efficient testing approach is required.

Unit tests are one of the most widely used tools to assure a minimal level of quality and compliance during development. However, they are not used in many projects where development takes place at low-level contexts. The main reason is that unit test development itself demands more time and becomes expensive in this context and tools that assist test creation are rare or absent. In UEFI development this scenario matches the reality of most teams and unit testing as well as other testing techniques are often not used. To address this fault we propose UTTOS, a tool that parses EDKII build configuration files, mocks the UEFI-specific functions for C development and enables UEFI test suite code to run in the operating system. We show that UTTOS is able to run the test suit in the operating system and save development time.

A quality software development is inclined to the software developer skills. The research focus on recommending the skills of individuals based on the eye movement data. The paper sketches a study conducted on students who are future developers. A fuzzy based recommendation system was implemented to recommend two skills, code coverage and debugging skills that are primary in source code review. The code coverage inference system recommends individual code coverage as maximum, average and minimum and the debugging fuzzy inference system recommends debugging skills as skilled, unskilled and expert.

Testing is one of the important phase of software engineering field, which checks the correctness of software. A common part in software testing is that test data are generated. For this test data, tester manually adds different test cases. But adding test cases manually is very difficult task. So we generate set of test cases called as test suite. Test case is nothing but a condition which we want to check. code coverage is important factor in test suite. While generating a test suite, consider a inheritance tree a of class and generate test cases by considering all branches of that tree. Test case may have more than one goal, check feasibility for this particular goal. For generating optimized test suite, apply Genetic and Memetic algorithm. The aim of this test suite generation is covering all branches for maximum code coverage while keeping the minimum size. Applying both algorithms for code coverage. code coverage of Memetic algorithm is maximum than code coverage of Genetic algorithm. We have implemented this system and for checking result use open source project such as Roops and net.

Several strategies have been proposed for test quality measurement and analysis. code coverage is likely the most widely used one. It enables to verify the ability of a test case to cover as many source code branches as possible. Although code coverage has been widely used, novel strategies have been recently employed. It is the case of test smells analysis, which has been introduced as an affordable strategy to evaluate the quality of test code. Test smells are poor design choices in implementation, and their occurrence in test code might reduce the quality of test suites. Test smells identification is clearly dependent on tool support, otherwise it could become a cost-ineffective strategy. However, as far as we know, there is no tool that combines code coverage and test smells to address test quality measurement. In this work, we present the JNose Test, a tool aimed to analyze test suite quality in the perspective of test smells. JNose Test detects code coverage and software evolution metrics and a set of test smells throughout software versions.

File systems need testing to discover bugs and to help ensure reliability. Many file system testing tools are evaluated based on their code coverage. We analyzed recently reported bugs in Ext4 and BtrFS and found a weak correlation between code coverage and test effectiveness: many bugs are missed because they depend on specific inputs, even though the code was covered by a test suite. Our position is that coverage of system call inputs and outputs is critically important for testing file systems. We thus suggest input and output coverage as criteria for file system testing, and show how they can improve the effectiveness of testing. We built a prototype called IOCov to evaluate the input and output coverage of file system testing tools. IOCov identified many untested cases (specific inputs and outputs or ranges thereof) for both CrashMonkey and xfstests. Additionally, we discuss a method and associated metrics to identify over- and undertesting using IOCov.

This paper presents our feedback from the study on the use of Objective Caml for safety-critical software development tools implementation. As a result, Objective Caml is now used for the new Scade (TM) certified embedded-code generator. The requirements for tools implementation are less strict than those for the embedded code itself. However, they are still quite demanding and linked to imperative languages properties, which are usually used for this kind of development. The use of Objective Caml is outstanding: firstly for its high level features (functional language of higher order, parametric polymorphism, pattern matching), secondly for its low level mechanisms needed by the runtime system (CC, exceptions). In order to develop the tools to check the safety-critical software development rules, it is necessary to reinterpret them for this language, and then to adapt Objective Caml so that it satisfies them. Thus, we propose a language restriction and a simplified runtime library in order that we can define and measure the coverage of a program written in Objective Caml according to the MC/DC criteria. Then we can look forward to seeing this kind of languages spread out the industrial environment, while raising the abstraction level in the conception and implementation of tools for certified programs production.

Testing JavaScript code is important. JavaScript has grown to be among the most popular programming languages and it is extensively used to create web applications both on the client and server. We present the first empirical study of JavaScript tests to characterize their prevalence, quality metrics (e.g. code coverage), and shortcomings. We perform our study across a representative corpus of 373 JavaScript projects, with over 5.4 million lines of JavaScript code. Our results show that 22% of the studied subjects do not have test code. About 40% of projects with JavaScript at client-side do not have a test, while this is only about 3% for the purely server-side JavaScript projects. Also tests for server-side code have high quality (in terms of code coverage, test code ratio, test commit ratio, and average number of assertions per test), while tests for client-side code have moderate to low quality. In general, tests written in Mocha, Tape, Tap, and Nodeunit frameworks have high quality and those written without using any framework have low quality. We scrutinize the (un)covered parts of the code under test to find out root causes for the uncovered code. Our results show that JavaScript tests lack proper coverage for event-dependent callbacks (36%), asynchronous callbacks (53%), and DOM-related code (63%). We believe that it is worthwhile for the developer and research community to focus on testing techniques and tools to achieve better coverage for difficult to cover JavaScript code.
