High-throughput low-cost VLSI architecture for AVC/H.264 CAVLC decoding

This study develops a low-cost very-large-scale-integration (VLSI) hardware architecture for entropy coding with increased throughput using the statistical properties of context-based adaptive variable-length coding (CAVLC) in AVC/H.264. Statistical analyses show that better symbol length prediction was achieved by breaking the recursive dependency among codewords for the multi-symbol decoder implementation. The proposed CAVLC decoder easily meets the real-time requirements for high definition (HD) (1920 x 1088) applications. The clock speed is only 13 MHz under the best case scenario.

Optimum mapping in an optical multiple pulse position modulation link using a maximum likelihood sequence detection scheme

The performance analysis of any multiple pulse position modulation (PPM) system is extremely time consuming because of the effects of different detection errors on the multiple PPM alphabet. In a small multiple PPM system such as (12 2), there are 64 codewords and each one can have ten possible false alarms, two possible erasures and four possible wrong-slot errors. The situation is worse if higher-order codes are considered. A novel algorithm, which reduces the time taken to predict the sensitivity of a multiple PPM system from almost 2 h of analysis to under a second, is presented. Results obtained using this method agree with those obtained using a full mathematical model. The authors also present a methodology that obtains a close to optimum mapping for any multiple PPM system. Detailed results show the effectiveness of this mapping routine.

The system of program and data representation that has been in use on the Rice University computer for five years is described. Each logical entity in storage occupies a block of consecutive memory locations. Each block is labeled by a codeword and may contain a program, a data vector, or codewords which in turn label blocks to form arrays. This storage arrangement is discussed with its realized advantages in programming systems: simplicity of programmed addressing, flexibility of data structures, efficiency of memory utilization, variability of system composition during execution, means of linkage between programs and from programs to data, and basis for storage protection. The application of labeled blocks may be extended to areas of time-sharing and multi-media storage control. On the basis of experience at Rice, some ideas on such extensions are presented.

Color-coding and phase-shift method for absolute phase measurement

In this paper, a novel color-coding method for absolute phase measurement is proposed. A three steps phase-shift algorithm was adopted to calculate the relative phase (wrapped phase) because of the least need of images. Color strips were used to mark each 2 pi phase-change period and three neighboring colors as a group were used as codewords to identify the fringe orders. With the two parts, relative phase and fringe orders, the absolute phase can be obtained directly. We selected five colors (black, red, green, blue, and white) to test our algorithm, and nearly 60 different codewords were embedded in one image. The fringe orders and the relative phase are calculated simultaneously, and this algorithm can circumvent the phase unwrapping process. Moreover, errors will not diffuse, because the relative phase and fringe orders are uncorrelated. Besides, no need of unwrapping processing will lead to high speed in 3D profile measurement. In addition, large object can be measured with high precision using this method owe to enormous codewords can be embedded in one color image. One experiment with a small object and a big complex object was designed to test the algorithm for separate objects, and experimental results showed the validity of our algorithm for absolute phase measurement. Adaptive partial-forward scheme for half-duplex relay system

A partial-forward scheme for the half-duplex relay system is proposed, which transmits only a part of codewords by considering code and channel characteristics at the relay. Specifically, two partial cooperation schemes, decode-and-partial-forward and amplify-and-partial-forward schemes are considered and to overcome the shortcomings of these schemes an adaptive partial-forward scheme is proposed which can be flexibly applied according to the given environment. Also, the criteria on how to select a part of the codeword bits at the relay are derived. Furthermore, the optimisation of the time-division parameters to obtain the performance improvement is investigated.

Partial distortion search algorithm based on two-step d_min updating

The encoding process of vector quantisation is computationally very expensive. To reduce distortion computation between the input vector and candidate codewords, the well-known partial distortion search (PDS) algorithm has been proposed. To reduce further its computational cost, a new PDS algorithm is proposed by making current d(min) decrease as quickly as possible. Experimental results have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed PDS algorithm in terms of both the computing dimensions and arithmetical operations per input vector.

A novel rate-adaptive transmission scheme using block coding of variable Hamming weight is presented for use in indoor optical wireless communications systems. This coding scheme is based on multiple pulse-position modulation, where codewords with different Hamming weight are allowed. The improvement in performance is corroborated by bit error rate computation using Monte Carlo simulation.

In this work, we demonstrate 2D wavelength-time encoding and decoding OCDMA system. The 2D generalized multi-wavelength prime codewords are used for realization of communication system properties analysis. The encoders and correlators are designed and realized according to used codewords. The experimental data transmission is realized for 80 km optical link. The input and output pulse sequences of correlator are measured and analyzed for different number of active users. The auto-correlation and cross-correlation function and pulse sequences are simulated by PC soft and compared to measured pulse sequence.

In this paper, we address the design of codes which achieve modulation diversity in block fading single-input single-output (SISO) channels with signal quantization at receiver and low-complexity decoding. With an unquantized receiver, coding based on algebraic rotations is known to achieve modulation coding diversity. On the other hand, with a quantized receiver, algebraic rotations may not guarantee diversity. Through analysis, we propose specific rotations which result in the codewords having equidistant component-wise projections. We show that the proposed coding scheme achieves maximum modulation diversity with a low-complexity minimum distance decoder.
