High efficiency Video coding (HEVC), the latest video standard, provides new algorithmic features that are substantial advances over those in previous standards in order to optimize the coding efficiency. HEVC performs with a high data compression ratio at the same level of video quality when compared to its predecessors, or substantially improved video quality at the same bitrate and it supports resolutions up to 8192x4320. In this work, we release a profiling of reference software of HEVC on Zynq platform under the embedded Linux, to give an indication of the more complex functionalities and aspects of this standard, using the different configuration files provided by the JCT-VC community.

Today, several alternatives for compression of digital pictures and video sequences exist to choose from. Beside internationally recognized standard solutions, open access options like the VP8 image and video compression have recently appeared and are gaining popularity. In this paper, we present the methodology and the results of the rate-distortion performance analysis of VP8. The analysis is based on the results of subjective quality assessment experiments, which have been carried out to compare the two algorithms to a set of state of the art image and video compression standards.

The three main pillars for lossless image compression are prediction, prediction residual correction and entropy coding. In this work, we propose a lossless image compression algorithm which utilizes local information to dynamically switch between different prediction techniques. Moreover, we improve on traditional prediction techniques and modify them into diagonal GAP and dynamic window weighted linear prediction. Finally, since the coding efficiency is directly proportional to the context being chosen if context arithmetic coding is applied, we propose a robust context model which utilizes local information to get better coding efficiency.

In this paper we present a video coding approach similar to texture-based methods but based on motion models. We consider motion perception properties instead of spatial texture properties of the video sequence. We integrate a motion classification algorithm to separate foreground objects containing noticeable motion from the background. These background areas are labeled as skipped areas that are not encoded. After decoding, frame reconstruction is performed by inserting the skipped background into the decoded frames. We are able to show as much as 15% an improvement over previous texture-based implementations in terms of video compression efficiency.

Current increasing effort of broadcast providers to transmit UHD (Ultra High Definition) content is likely to increase demand for ultra high definition televisions (UHDTVs). To compress UHDTV content, several alternative encoding mechanisms exist. In addition to internationally recognized standards, open access proprietary options, such as VP9 video encoding scheme, have recently appeared and are gaining popularity. One of the main goals of these encoders is to efficiently compress video sequences beyond HDTV resolution for various scenarios, such as broadcasting or internet streaming. In this paper, a broadcast scenario rate-distortion performance analysis and mutual comparison of one of the latest video coding standards H.265/HEVC with recently released proprietary video coding scheme VP9 is presented. Also, currently one of the most popular and widely spread encoder H.264/AVC has been included into the evaluation to serve as a comparison baseline. The comparison is performed by means of subjective evaluations showing actual differences between encoding algorithms in terms of perceived quality. The results indicate a dominance of HEVC based encoding algorithm in comparison to other alternatives if a wide range of bit-rates from very low to high bit-rates corresponding to low quality up to transparent quality when compared to original and uncompressed video is considered. In addition, VP9 shows competitive results for synthetic content and bit-rates that correspond to operating points for transparent or close to transparent quality video.

Learned image compression has achieved improved rate-distortion performance with end-to-end optimized framework based on deep neural networks. However, context-based entropy modeling for learned image compression cannot simultaneously achieve enhanced efficiency and sufficiently exploiting the channel-wise correlations. In this paper, we propose a novel framework for learned image compression with channel-wise grouped context modeling. The proposed framework presents channel-wise grouping to explicitly exploit the channel-wise correlations and develop a grouped 3-D context model to achieve efficient entropy coding with a guarantee of rate-distortion performance. The proposed framework achieves competitive performance with a significantly reduced decoding complexity in comparison to 3-D context models.

In this paper, we proposed an adaptive search range selection algorithm which is based on motion vector variance to reduce computational complexity of the motion estimation with full search. The proposal is designed to suit for hardware implementation. In previous work, the method which determines the search range using motion vector variance was proposed. However, the selected search range is not efficient enough. The proposed algorithm can efficiently reduce the redundant search range using the distribution of the surrounding motion vectors. In addition, the proposed method performs the hierarchical motion estimation when the search range is still too wide. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieved averagely 80.9% complexity reduction with 0.9% BD-rate increasing, compared with the previous work.

Although IBDI, a coding tool that increases internal bit depth to improve compression performance for high quality video, is able to significantly improve the coding efficiency, the internal memory increment problem occurs because of the necessity of storing reference frames. Therefore, memory compression algorithm is proposed to solve the internal memory increment problem while maintaining the coding performance of IBDI. The memory compression methods have successively reduced the reference frame memory while preserving the coding efficiency by dividing a reference frame into the fixed size processing units and using additional information of each unit. However, additional information of each processing unit also has to be stored in internal frame memory;the amount of additional information could be a limitation of the effectiveness of memory compression scheme. Therefore, to relax this limitation of previous method, we propose a selective merging-based reference frame memory compression algorithm, dramatically reducing the amount of additional information. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm provides much smaller overhead than that of the previous algorithm while keeping the coding efficiency of IBDI.

(1)Background modeling is an important pre-processing step for object detection in surveillance video analysis systems. Recently, it has been proved to be useful for high-efficiency surveillance video coding. In existing works, the modeling background frame often needs to be high-quality encoded so as to achieve a large bit-rate saving. However, the high-quality background frame requires lots of bits in the code stream, so it is infeasible to update the background frame too frequently. Therefore, a better bit-allocation method is desirable to facilitate in-time background updating and bit-saving background coding. In this paper, we firstly build up a background updating model from a detailed analysis of results on surveillance video. Following this, we propose a bit-saving and quality-maintaining background frame coding method. In our method, the background frame can be updated more timely, consequently leading to the better coding efficiency. Experimental results show that our method can achieve more than 15% bit-rate decrease compared with three state-of-art methods.

An Integrated Approach for Lossless Image Compression Using CLAHE, Two-Channel Encoding and Adaptive Arithmetic coding

Lossless image compression techniques play a crucial role in preserving image quality while reducing storage space and transmission bandwidth. This paper proposes a novel hybrid integrated method for lossless image compression by combining Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE), two-channel encoding, and adaptive arithmetic coding to achieve highly efficient compression without any loss of image information. The first step of the proposed approach involves applying Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) to enhance the local contrast of the image. This pre-processing step aids in reducing the entropy and increasing the redundancy in the image, creating a more favourable environment for subsequent compression algorithms. Next, the image is divided into two channels: one channel focuses on encoding essential structural information, while the other channel handles the finer details. This segregation leverages the inherent properties of images to improve compression efficiency. To achieve further compression gains, an adaptive arithmetic coding algorithm for encoding the data in each channel is utilized. Adaptive arithmetic coding adapts its probability model during the encoding process, leading to improved compression performance compared to traditional static coding methods. The proposed method offers significant potential in various applications, it is especially crucial in medical imaging, where large volumes of high-resolution images are generated during procedures such as MRI, CT scans, or digital pathology, transmitting high-quality images in resource-constrained environments, and facilitating image processing tasks requiring precise data preservation. CLAHE can be a valuable tool in medical imaging to enhance essential diagnostic information in medical images before compression.
