A framework for the analysis of error propagation for high rate runlength-limited codes is developed. The susceptibility to errors of capacity approaching code constructions, the enumerative and sequence replacement technique and bit stuffing, are analyzed in detail. It is shown that the first two techniques experience low error propagation and that they are superior to the popular bit-stuffing technique.

We present a combinatorial analysis to derive an explicit expression for the number of transmission errors that occur in a block transmitted through a Gilbert channel. This expression can be used to investigate the tradeoffs among the decoding error probability, degree of interleaving, and the error-correction ability of a code. We illustrate how a designer may apply our method to determine different combinations of the degree of interleaving and error correction ability to achieve a specified decoding error rate.

Applications of Large Language Models (LLM) for source code analysis and related tasks arising during the development of an industrial static analyzer are becoming increasingly relevant due to the rapid development of LLM capabilities. The paper investigates several problems in the field of industrial static analysis, for which the use of LLM may be promising, provides quality evaluation of the results, key limitations and advantages for each one. Among the problems, the detection of 'variable misuse' logic errors and the verification of warnings generated by the the static analysis tools are considered. In addition to tasks directly related to source code error detection, several methods have been developed to address supporting tasks in static analysis. These include generating specifications for library functions based on documentation and source code, as well as translating static analyzer tests developed for one programming language into another. All the methods were implemented within the infrastructure of the industrial static analyzer Svace and were tested on the dataset, which is used for Svace evaluation. Conclusions of results evaluation and possible integration to Svace for all proposed methods are discussed in the paper. © 2024 IEEE.

Distributed error correction in a network when a source message is transmitted to a set of receiving nodes on a network is addressed. Such an approach is called network error correction, with the conventional link-by-link approach being a special case. Network generalizations of the Hamming bound and the Gilber-Varshamov bound are derived.

New N-dimensional constellations for the Rayleigh fading channel have been described in [4,5,6]. These constellations provide a diversity of order N and a gain of 10 dB to 14.5 dB at a BER of 10-3 when compared to 16-QAM modulations. The decoding of a 4-dimensional 4096 points constellation seems unrealistic, even with today's VLSI technology. This paper proposes algorithmic simplifications, which allow us to decrease the complexity of the implementation to a reasonable level. In addition, an architecture is also proposed for a VLSI decoder for a 34 Mb/s digital HDTV signal, and its complexity is evaluated.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated unprecedented capabilities in code generation. However, there remains a limited understanding of code generation errors that LLMs can produce. To bridge the gap, we conducted an in-depth analysis of code generation errors across six representative LLMs on the HumanEval dataset. Specifically, we first employed open coding and thematic analysis to distill a comprehensive taxonomy of code generation errors. We analyzed two dimensions of error characteristics—semantic characteristics and syntactic characteristics. Our analysis revealed that LLMs often made nontrivial, multi-line code generation errors in various locations and with various root causes. We further analyzed the correlation between these errors and task complexity as well as test pass rate. Our findings highlighted several challenges in locating and fixing code generation errors made by LLMs. In the end, we discussed several future directions to address these challenges. This paper considers a method of coding the sensor outputs in order to detect stealthy false data injection attacks. An intelligent attacker can design a sequence of data injection to sensors that pass the state estimator and statistical fault detector, based on knowledge of the system parameters. To stay undetected, the injected data should increase the state estimation errors while keep the estimation residues in a small range. We employ a coding matrix to the original sensor outputs to increase the estimation residues, such that the alarm will be triggered by the detector even under intelligent data injection attacks. This is a low cost method compared with encryption over sensor communication networks. We prove the conditions the coding matrix should satisfy under the assumption that the attacker does not know the coding matrix yet. An iterative optimization algorithm is developed to compute a feasible coding matrix, and, we show that in general, multiple feasible coding matrices exist.

In machine learning, one of the methods to solve multiclass classification problems is a framework called Error-Correcting Output Codes (ECOC), which constructs a multiclass classifier by combining a lot of binary classifiers. ECOC assigns binary codewords to each category, and the multiclass classification performance varies depending on the code. In this study, we treat each element of the codeword as a random variable and evaluate the average performance of ECOC. As a result, for M class classification if the number of binary classifiers is O(M), then the average error probability of various codes approaches that of MAP estimation. We show that the important points are the ratio between the number of binary classifiers and M and the difference between the maximum posterior probability and the second highest posterior probability for the categories. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, we present an approach to automatically detect high impact coding errors in large Java applications which use frameworks. These high impact errors cause serious performance degradation and outages in real world production environments, are very time-consuming to detect, and potentially cost businesses thousands of dollars. Based on 3 years experience working with IBM customer production systems, we have identified over 400 high impact coding patterns, from which we have been able to distill a small set of pattern detection algorithms. These algorithms use deep static analysis, thus moving problem detection earlier in the development cycle from production to development. Additionally, we have developed an automatic false positive filtering mechanism based on domain specific knowledge to achieve a level of usability acceptable to IBM field engineers. Our approach also provides necessary contextual information around the sources of the problems to help in problem remediation. We outline how our approach to problem determination can be extended to multiple programming models and domains. We have implemented this problem determination approach in the SABER tool and have used it successfully to detect many serious code defects in several large commercial applications. A new error concealment algorithm for packet video, effectively eliminating error propagation effects is presented. The algorithm adopts a one pixel block overlap coding structure to solve the error propagation problem. Experimental results show that the method can have good error concealment results when the damaged frame loses all DCT coefficients.
