We propose a new Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) estimator, which is able to exploit both intra- and inter-frame correlation of source codec parameters. Simulations, which were performed with realistic parameter correlations, show SNR gains of up to 8 dB.

An improved method to construct t-EC/AUED (t error-correcting and all unidirectional error detecting codes) is presented. In many cases, the new method matches or improves the best known t-EC/AUED codes. Furthermore, the construction does not require complementation of code words except the all zero and the all ones words. So, this method is also superior to the previous techniques when the code parameters are the same.

This paper analyzes several aspects of erasure correction in the decoding of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes over the q-ary Erasure Channel. It is shown, that by limiting the maximum number of erasures the decoder is allowed to correct, a significant improvement in the probability of undetected error is obtained, at relatively high channel erasure and low channel transition probabilities. Of particular interest is the errata pattern with the maximum number of erasures the RS code can correct and at least one error, which always causes an undetected error in an incomplete decoder. This 'limited erasures' approach is compared with the 'readable erasures' method [1], [2]. This approach is also analyzed for concatenated codes using an RS code as the outer code.

The cases of single error detection and single error correction are considered, where the single error is allowed to be a shift error or a symmetric error. Codes for single error detection and for single error correction are constructed by inserting parity blocks into the (d,k) constrained sequence. An analytical method for evaluating performance data of algebraically decoded linear unequal error protection codes used on burst error channels is presented. Position-related performance data are introduced to characterize the decoding events with regard to assessing the error protection level attached to each code word position. The method is based on an automata model of the channel-decoder-cascade described by a compound automaton. The decoder is considered to be a deterministic evaluation device visualized by a code trellis. To investigate the error protection level at a fixed code word position, the trellis is dissected into two trellises corresponding to that position. The performance analysis can be performed in a transform domain. The position-related transform coefficients are connected with the position-related coset probabilities by a Walsh-Hadamard-Transformation.
