Correct energy conservation in geothermal wellbore simulation

fundamental error of interpretation of static steam dryness versus flowing steam quality in the coding of the simulator GWELL has been found, that means it does not correctly conserve energy or momentum. GWELL, or the energy and momentum subroutines from it, may have formed a basis for other geothermal wellbore simulator codes in existence, prompting this note on how to quickly check if your favorite geothermal wellbore simulator is actually conserving energy. Adaptive resynchronisation marker positioning method for error resilient video transmission

For reliable video transmission over error-prone mobile channels, an adaptive resynchronisation marker positioning (RMP) method is proposed for rapidly resynchronising the VLC decoding synchronisation which is often lost due to channel errors. The simulation results show that the proposed adaptive RMP method gives a remarkable improvement over the fixed RMP method.

ON DIFFERENTIALLY ENCODED STAR 16QAM WITH DIFFERENTIAL DETECTION AND DIVERSITY

Star 16QAM is a modulation method that transmits 4 bits per symbol and has the advantage that it may be differentially encoded and detected, It is very robust to fast multiplicative Rayleigh fading and is suitable for mobile telephone systems and personal communication networks. The main contribution of this paper is the derivation and bit error probability simulation of the maximum likelihood differential detector using phase differences and amplitude ratios from L diversity branches for bit decisions, As a comparison, much simpler previously known post detection combining techniques are generalized for star 16QAM and optimized. The bit error probability is simulated for both diversity detectors on a multiplicative Rayleigh fading channel with additive white Gaussian noise, It is found that the bit error probability of the ML detector may also be obtained by the simple combining detector, This is also true for the error floor due to maximum Doppler frequency. The diversity gain is almost 8 dB, measured in signal to noise ratio per diversity branch, at a bit error probability of 1 percent, The diversity detector can sustain an almost 3 times larger Doppler frequency again at a bit error probability of 1 percent. We also show that star 16QAM offers, at most, 3 subchannels with different bit error probabilities.

Low-cost methodology for fault diagnosis and localization in pipelined ADCs

This paper presents two low cost methodologies for fault diagnosis and localization in digitally calibrated pipelined analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). A simple design for test (DFT) is proposed to generate the required test stimulus and to provide the required controllability to collect the code error (fault) signature, which is represented by the difference between the transfer characteristics of the device under test and a golden one. In the first method, the features of the code error-signature are modeled to differentiate between the fault types and fault locations. The main focus of the first method is to detect and localize the capacitance mismatch, gain degradation, reference voltage error and offset voltage error of the device under test (DUT). The modeled features of the code error signatures are the number of zero crossing and the number of jumps in its derivative. The number of zero crossing is utilized to diagnose and localize the capacitance mismatch and gain degradation faults, while the number of jumps is used to detect and localize the reference voltage and offset voltage faults. The faults are determined stage-wise. The second method needs longer diagnosing time, but is able to diagnose the multi-source faults. To verify the proposed methodologies, a ten-stage digitally-calibrated pipelined ADC is behaviorally modeled and simulated using MATLAB. Faults having different type and values are intentionally injected in different stages of the design. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed methods in detecting the faulty portion and fault type. Therefore, the faulty (or even the weak) portion(s) of the DUT can be identified. Which is useful feedback information for the designer to enhance the reliability of the subsequent design generation.

In MPEG-4. the boundary macro-blocks of reference video objects are padded by replicating the boundary samples towards the exterior. The authors propose the introduction of a linear extrapolation based pre-padding step to minimise prediction errors. Experimental results indicate that gains of up to 7% can be achieved for boundary macro-block coding by this proposed technique.
