Distortion Outage Analysis for Joint Space-Time coding and Kalman Filtering

In this paper, we consider the scenario of transmitting a first-order Gauss-Markov vector signal over a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) Rayleigh nonfrequency selective fading channel. The signal is reconstructed at the receiver side with the help of a Kalman filter in order to minimize the mean squared error. Orthogonal space time codes are utilized in order to increase the quality of estimation and mitigate the destructing effects of the fading channel. As a criterion for estimation quality assessment, we use the distortion outage probability. We first obtain upper and lower bounds for the outage probability as a function of system parameters. We then perform high-SNR analysis of the bounds, through which we prove the achievability of the maximum diversity order for a N x K MIMO fading channel. In addition, we obtain upper and lower bounds for the coding gain of the distortion outage probability in the high-SNR regime, and outline the relation between system parameters and the coding gain.

Two new design techniques for adaptive orthogonal block transforms based on vector quantization (VQ) codebooks are presented. Both techniques start from reference vectors that are adapted to the characteristics of the signal to be coded, while using different methods to create orthogonal bases, The resulting transforms represent a signal coding tool that stands between a pure VQ scheme on one extreme and signal-independent, fixed block transformation-like discrete cosine transform (DCT) on the other, The proposed technique has superior compaction performance as compared to DCT both in the rendition of details of the image and in the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) figures.

Space-Frequency coding for Dual Polarized Hybrid Mobile Satellite Systems

An increasing number of hybrid mobile systems comprising a satellite and a terrestrial component are becoming standardized and realized. The next generation of these systems will employ higher dimensions adopting multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) techniques. In this work, we build upon recent studies of dual polarization MIMO for each component and propose the use of full-rate full-diversity (FRFD) codes adopting a space-frequency paradigm. We also propose a scheme taking advantage of the separation between the subcarriers to enhance the coding gain. By critically assessing the different options for the 4 transmit, 2 receive hybrid scenario taking into account system and channel particularities, we demonstrate that the proposed scheme is a solution for enhancing the performance of next generation hybrid mobile satellite systems.

An Enhanced Methodology for Energy-Efficient Interdependent Source-Channel coding for Wireless Sensor Networks

The major limitations faced in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are high power consumption and reliability degradation. An intensified methodology for the energy efficient Interdependent Source-Channel coding scheme is presented in this paper, which ensures robust communication with compression and reduced energy consumption. The scheme achieves required bit error rate (BER) in addition to reduced bits transmission, as opposed to the standard error correction schemes, in which redundancy is added to achieve a specific BER. The energy overheads of typical error correction schemes are also brought down and hence, reduces the total energy consumption. The methodology is studied, and BER performance and energy efficiency are validated in the context of MicaZ sensor platform, in AWGN channel condition, analytically and by simulation. Our methodology for the characterization M2{30, 7, 2, 5} attains 43% decrease in the total energy consumption, a coding gain of 4.33 dB and compression of 26.2% compared to uncoded transmission.

A Perspective on Network coding Based on Packet Length

Network coding (NC) significantly increases communication opportunities and improves network performance. The focus of most research is on performance analysis with the same packet length of input flows. However, the length of packets is different in real networks and affects network coding performance. In this paper, first we proposed an asynchronous network coding strategy with periodic broadcasting at the relay node and simulated the relation between the broadcasting period and the coding gain. Second, we took the packet length into consideration and obtained the mathematical relation between the coding gain and the packet length for a given arrival rate. Finally, we verified the results via simulation. Our work showed that the impact of the packet length could not be ignored when using network coding. The methodology to improve the performance of NC in real networks is provided when the statistical length of packets is considered.

Efficient coding for unicast flows in opportunistic wireless networks

In this study the authors consider the scenario of multiple unicast flows intersecting a common router in an opportunistic wireless network. Instead of forwarding packets in each of the flows independently, the router can perform inter-session network coding and transmit codewords to improve the network throughput. Unlike coding for multicast data flow for which an optimal code can be constructed in polynomial time, coding for unicast data flows is a more complicated coding problem and has been shown to be an NP-hard problem. Opportunities for inter-session network coding have also been shown to exist in single-hop wireless data dissemination network such as Wi-Fi and WiMAX networks. In this study the authors propose an efficient coding scheme for unicast flows and demonstrate its higher coding gain over previously proposed state-of-the-art coding schemes, validated using simulation results and wireless sensor network testbed packet reception traces. The authors also show that the proposed algorithm is optimal for all 238 non-isomorphic coding instances for instances for n 4, and for 9500 of the 9608 non-isomorphic coding instances for n = 5, where n is the number of unicast packets.

Simple High-Order Integer Cosine Transform for High-Resolution Video coding

A matrix method is proposed for constructing a simple order-32 integer cosine transform. Based on the method, a one-norm simple order-32 integer transform is constructed and its fast algorithms of low computational complexity are developed that require only integer operations and whose computational complexity is 4.9 times less than that of well-known algorithms and is 21.6 times less than that of the standard H.265. This transform is close to the discrete cosine transform and has good coding performance.

The connected dominating set (CDS) approach is used to create a backbone within wireless networks which ultimately result in an increased number of transmissions while also reducing the number of collisions within wireless networks. Network coding (NC) on the other hand combines the packets which finally end up further reducing the number of transmissions while increasing security within the wireless scenario. The blend of these two approaches has achieved much in terms of coding opportunity, coding gain, robustness towards packet-loss, and increased throughput. But on closer scrutiny, it has been observed that the application of the CDS-based approach along with NC has various problems as well. This approach keeps on combining and sending the packets until all the receivers attain all the packets. Moreover, the CDS--NC-based approach constrains the network, whereas all the NC nodes (dominating nodes) are connected together creating larger numbers of NC nodes, ultimately resulting in a complex network. Our Clique-Based Algorithm, along with the NC approach, not only efficiently deals with the problem concerned with a CDS--NC-based approach but it also deals with the local problem smoothly (local problem are problems confined to problems within the range of a NC node). The comparative results have shown a clear indication that the application of our Clique-Based Algorithm along with the NC approach clearly outperforms the CDS-NC- and the Tree-NC-based approaches in terms of the number of transmissions and the number of coding operations. This technique brings about better throughput, coding opportunity, coding gain, and robustness towards packet loss as compared to CDS-NC- and Tree-NC-based approaches.

Optimization design of biorthogonal wavelets for embedded image coding

We present here a simple technique for parametrization of popular biorthogonal wavelet filter banks (BWFBs) having vanishing moments (VMs) of arbitrary multiplicity. Given a prime wavelet filter with VMs of arbitrary multiplicity, after formulating it as a trigonometric polynomial depending on two free parameters, we prove the existence of its dual filter based on the theory of Diophantine equation. The dual filter permits perfect reconstruction (PR) and also has VMs of arbitrary multiplicity. We then give the complete construction of two-parameter families of 17/11 and 10/18 BWFBs, from which any linear-phase 17/11 and 10/18 BWFB possessing desired features could be derived with ease by adjusting the free parameters. In particular, two previously unpublished BWFBs for embedded image coding are constructed, both have optimum coding gains and rational coefficients. Extensive experiments show that our new BWFBs exhibit performance equal to Winger's W-17/11 and Villasenor's V-10/18 (superior to CDF-9/7 by Cohen et al. and Villasenor's V-6/10) for image compression, and yet require slightly lower computational costs.

BANDWIDTH EFFICIENT CONCATENATED coding SCHEMES FOR FADING CHANNELS

Concatenated codes consisting of trellis inner codes and Reed-Solomon outer codes axe considered to achieve large coding gains with small bandwidth expansion in the presence of frequency-nonselective slow Rician fading. Both errors-only and errors-erasures decoding algorithms for outer codes are applied. New upper bounds on bit error probability performance in the presence of fading are obtained and compared with simulation results for zero channel memory. The effect of interleaving in eliminating channel memory is investigated. The performance gains that are achieved by the coding scheme relative to the reference uncoded systems are illustrated via some examples.
