The ITU-T G.711.1 embedded wideband speech codec was approved by ITU-T in March 2008. This codec generates a bitstream comprised of three layers: a G.711 compatible core layer with noise shaping, a lower band enhancement layer and an MDCT-based higher band enhancement layer. It contains also an optional post-processing module called Appendix I designed to improve quality of the decoded speech in case of interoperability condition with legacy 0.711 encoder. The improvement is achieved by a novel low complexity PCM quantization noise reduction technique described in this article. Subjective test results show that the quality of the interoperability mode with the legacy 0.711 codec is significantly better when the Appendix I is activated.

Multiple description video coding based on residuum compensation

As one of the focus areas of robust video coding and transmission, multiple description video coding has attracted comprehensive attention. The low coding efficiency of multiple description video coding is always the major challenge in this field. In order to improve the performance of multiple description video coding, this paper proposes a scheme based on residuum compensation. In this scheme, each original video frame is encoded with a traditional encoder first to get the first description. Then the error residuum of each coded frame is added up to the corresponding original frame and the resulting compensated frame is encoded by another traditional encoder to generate the second description suc- cessively. This work uses JM10.0 of H.264/AVC as video coding codec to conduct the experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed scheme has good coding performance. Compared to state of art traditional single description encoder, the efficiency can be as high as 90%, he. the redundancy is only 10% to 20%.

A dynamic subbands design selection scheme for perceptual audio coding is presented which optimizes the coding efficiency in association with all improved utilization of the masking potential of the signal. The choices for subbands design Selection include critical hands, uniform subbands, uniform subbands with a non-uniform last hand and a non-uniform-non-critical (NUNC) subbands distribution. A particular consideration is given to corresponding critical band boundaries while formulating NUNC subbands, to minimize the perception of coding noise. The design selection decision is made by First identifying the best tradeoff between empty quantizer slots and amount of side information, followed by a minimization or the perceptual entropy (PE) estimates. A further analysis is carried Out to identify the prominent spectral peaks (PSPs), with a view to efficiently utilize their masking potential by the bit allocation algorithm which makes a bit cut first to subbands with PSPs. Test results based oil ITU-R recommendation BS.1 116 show that Our coding scheme performs slightly better as compared to MPEG-4 AAC verification model (V-M) for a majority of signal types from the SQAM database. The paper Concludes with a discussion Of future research implications of the work.

This paper presents the idea of optimization algorithm of adaptive wavelets that can improve the coding algorithm to decrease the computation complexity to ten percent of that presented in the paper[5]. The full optimization of adaptive wavelets is replaced by the new method, in which the optimization is divided into two cascaded steps. And the entropy-coding-based quantization of side information is adopted so that tile bit rate is significantly reduced because it accounts for a plenty of percent of bit costs. The bit rate can decrease about 15 percent of that presented ill paper [8] by taking the method. It also coordinates with psycho-acoustics model and dynamic bits allocation scheme to make the coding noise inaudible under the condition of the least bits cost.

A flat, multiscalable, highly efficient and reliable video transmission scheme

The transmission of video materials by digital compression has been widely applied in recent years. The following problems are involved in this approach. (1) A duplex system composed of main and backup links is often used in the transmission of video materials. Thus, the transmission capacity of the backup system becomes redundant in the normal state. (2) No automatic image quality monitoring method for video transmission has been established. On the other hand, the coding/decoding techniques for digital video transmission are almost fully established, and various devices are already widely used. Thus, it is highly desirable to reduce the above redundancy, that is, to achieve highly efficient automatic picture quality monitoring. Consequently, this paper proposes a flat multiscalable video transmission scheme in which highly efficient and highly reliable video transmission with automatic picture quality monitoring can be realized by simply adding pre-and postprocessing, without modifying the existing coding/decoding devices. In the proposed scheme, noise cancellation by averaging and high picture quality are realized by processing that reduces the correlation of coding noise in the decoded video pictures of the two systems. The SN ratios of the received video and the original pictures can be estimated from the residual correlation. The proposed scheme can be applied not only to improving the efficiency of video materials transmission, but also to improving the reliability of picture transmission over the Internet.
