Advances in technology have resulted in Internet-scale deployment of storage systems such as peer-to-peer storage and cloud storage, where data is distributed over multiple storage nodes in a networked environment. In these environments the storage nodes are often commodity machines and are susceptible to failure. The notion of fault domain, introduced by Microsoft Azure, captures the fault-tolerance aspects of a data center. A fault domain is defined as a set of servers all of which become inaccessible when a single fault (such as the failure of a switch or a router) occurs in the data center. As such a fault domain can be viewed as a spatially correlated or region based failure. In order to enhance reliability through redundancy, maximum distance separable (MDS) codes such as Reed-Solomon codes and (N, K) codings are utilized. In this paper we present analytical results demonstrating that the choice of the coding parameters N and K may have significant impact on storage that will be necessary to achieve reliability. We present a polynomial time algorithm for optimal storage allocation in a mesh network and we conduct extensive experimentation to evaluate the impact of the coding parameters Ar and K on the storage requirement to provide all region fault tolerance with varying size of the mesh and the fault region.

Video object recognition is an importance topic in both defense and civilian applications. However, object recognition guarantee is not considered in current video coding standard H.264. For this issue, experiments based on H.264/AVC codec are designed to measure the affection of coding parameters on recognition performance. The quantitative functions of recognition performance with coding rate and resolution ratio are given. More practically, such functions can be used for optimal tradeoff between the channel bandwidth and video object recognition performance when efficient video data transfer is needed.

In order to solve the problem that the whole reference video is required for calculation in model PDMOSL, we focus on the impact of coding parameters and network conditions on the model, especially the influence of the QP, frame rate and packet loss rate. Based on our findings, we proposed a novel way to calculate PDMOSL without the need of reference video, and only two parameters are need. The proposed way can reduce the time complexity and is applicable to practical systems, especially for network nodes.

An Improved Blind Recognition Method for Synchronization Position and coding parameters of k/n Rate Convolutional Codes in a Noisy Environment

In digital communication systems, error correction codes are used to recover data that has been disturbed in a noisy environment. Convolutional code is a commonly used error correction code. In non-cooperative communication systems, it is very meaningful to blindly identify the synchronization position and coding parameters of convolutional codes. Existing reference had proposed a blind recognition algorithm for coding parameters of k/n rate convolutional codes in a noisy environment, but it didn't take into account the case where the received code words were not synchronized. In this paper, this problem is improved by using the quasi-correlation between the receive sequence and the check matrix to estimate the synchronization position, while obtaining the check matrix. It implements blind recognition of the synchronization position and coding parameters of k/n rate convolutional codes in a noisy environment. Simulation experimental results show that the improved algorithm in this paper is effective.

Rate allocation for video transmission over lossy correlated networks

A novel rate allocation algorithm for video transmission over lossy networks subject to bursty packet losses is presented. A Gilbert-Elliot model is used at the encoder to drive the selection of coding parameters. Experimental results using the H.26L test model show a significant performance improvement with respect to the assumption of independent packet losses.

Design and implementation of HDTV PES encoder

The hardware design of HDTV PES encoder is given in this paper. The encoder builds up a HDTV PES stream by six SDTV ES streams with different bitrate. Each coded data is reorganized to form a new PES stream;meanwhile coding parameters is modified, The PES stream is outputted in stable bitrate. All these functions are implemented in one CPLD. Experiment results show that the decoded image is improved, and constant bitrate can be maintained at the same time.
