Lifetime is a crucial issue for Multi-hop wireless network powered by size-limited batteries. There have been few algorithms proposed to solve such network lifetime challenge. Furthermore, the application of flexible channel coding redundancy scheduling to improve energy-balancing and energy-efficiency has seldom been reported in literature. In this paper, we propose a new approach to achieve energy-balancing of Multi-hop wireless networks while meeting the requirement of Quality of Service (QoS) by optimizing channel coding rates. In the proposed approach, we develop a scheme to select the optimal channel coding rate on each hop to approach a lower bound of quality requirement while achieving the best effort energy-balancing. Given a certain channel situation, a higher channel coding rate is assigned to reduce the error rate with a higher energy cost;or a lower channel coding rate is assigned to improve energy efficiency and energy-balancing at the cost of reduced QoS. The simulation results have shown that the proposed approach can significantly improve energy-balancing and prolong network lifetime of Multi-hop wireless networks within the QoS requirements.

Exploiting Parallelism With Random Linear Network coding in High-Speed Ethernet Systems

D Parallelism has become one of the key architectural features in 40-/100-/400-Gb Ethernet multi lane distribution (MLD) standards. The MLD packetizes and distributes traffic adaptively over parallel lanes and maps them to parallel network interfaces for wide area transmission, typically over optical networks. As such, the MLD creates not only new network topology abstractions but also enables modular implementations of various new features to improve the system performance. In this paper, we study the performance of the parallelized Ethernet in combination with erasure coding and more specifically random linear network coding (RLNC). We present a novel theoretical modeling framework, including the derivation of upper and lower bounds of differential delay and the resulting receiver queue size-a critical performance measure in the high-speed Ethernet. The results show benefits of a combined usage of parallelism and RLNC: with a proper set of design parameters, the differential delay and the receiver buffer size can be reduced significantly, while cross-layer design and path computation greatly simplified.

Model selection and the principle of minimum description length

This article reviews the principle of minimum description length (MDL) for problems of model selection. By viewing statistical modeling as a means of generating descriptions of observed data, the MDL framework discriminates between competing models based on the complexity of each description. This approach began with Kolmogorov's theory of algorithmic complexity, matured in the literature on information theory, and has recently received renewed attention within the statistics community. Here we review both the practical and the theoretical aspects of MDL as a tool for model selection, emphasizing the rich connections between information theory and statistics. At the boundary between these two disciplines we find many interesting interpretations of popular frequentist and Bayesian procedures. As we show, MDL provides an objective umbrella under which rather disparate approaches to statistical modeling can coexist and be compared. We illustrate the MDL principle by considering problems in regression, nonparametric curve estimation, cluster analysis, and time series analysis. Because model selection in linear regression is an extremely common problem that arises in many applications, we present detailed derivations of several MDL criteria in this context and discuss their properties through a number of examples. Our emphasis is on the practical application of MDL, and hence we make extensive use of real datasets. in writing this review, we tried to make the descriptive philosophy of MDL natural to a statistics audience by examining classical problems in model selection. In the engineering literature, however, MDL is being applied to ever more exotic modeling situations. As a principle for statistical modeling in general, one strength of MDL is that it can be intuitively extended to provide useful toots for new problems.

redundancy of the universal coding by nonequivalent symbols for Markov sources given by matrices of transient probabilities with a fixed number of different rows is found. As a consequence, the estimates of redundancy for Markov sources with memory s and for Mealy Markov sources given by a graph are obtained. The rate of decrease in redundancy dependent on the graph characteristics, the length of the coded unit, and the channel bandwidth capacity is established.

Packet level coding schemes are used to improve the transmission reliability and efficiency in data broadcasting applications, especially for wireless networks. However, existing coding schemes have large redundancy because packets are coded in random or certain probability distributions. Although the Maximum Distance Separable(MDS) codes are designed without coding redundancy, they are not effective if the packet erasure probability is high. To reduce the coding redundancy, lots of work use the receiver side information to adjust the codes construction on-the-fly, which is more beneficial. However, these work have disadvantages: 1) the coding redundancy is also large;2) the feedback schemes have great affect on code's performance. In this paper, we design a novel "Rateless Online MDS Code"(ROME) with a robust feedback scheme to eliminate the coding redundancy. Our contributions include that our codes are throughput optimal codes without redundancy, and we analyze the theoretical finite field size bound to achieve throughput optimal codes. We also design the finite field construction to speed up the encoding and decoding process. Finally, we compare the performance between ROME and other existing codes, like RLC, LT, RT oblivious and SLT codes, and their performance when feedbacks are erased.

Partially overlapped channels are barely used for concurrent transmission in WiFi networks, since they lead to collisions where the collided packets cannot be decoded successfully. In this paper, we observe that the actual corrupted symbols by partial-channel interference in OFDM-based WiFi networks are not as severe as we expected. There remains extra coding redundancy that can be exploited from the corrupted symbols, and utilized for packet recovery. Accordingly, we present a novel paradigm termed Piros, in order to Push the lImits of paRtially cOncurrent tranSmission in WiFi networks. Piros strategically leverages the coding redundancy according to the overlap portion in a distributed manner, and extracts useful decoding information from the corrupted symbols to decode the packet with partial-channel interference.

This study's goal was to better explain memory and its decline in a natural setting to improve social work practice amongthe elderly. The effect that bimodal (verbal and visual) presentation of information has on delayed incidental recall wascompared with unimodal (verbal only) presentation. A significant increase occurred in overall recall and verbatim *** recall improved, but not significantly.

In the past decade arrays of Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiode (GmAPD) detectors have increased in size from 4x4 to 128x32, resulting in significant increases in data rates. If not handled appropriately, data collected with larger arrays and higher laser pulse repetition frequencies could potentially stress existing data dissemination and storage infrastructures. Data compression techniques that reduce storage requirements by taking advantage of data redundancies could be used to mitigate this problem. In this paper we present an analysis of the coding redundancy that exists in raw data captured with three dimensional imaging laser radar systems that employ arrays of Geiger-mode Avalanche Photodiode (GmAPD) detectors. The data we analyzed was collected in three different scanning modes, namely: mapping-mode, target-mode and stare-mode. We found that there is a significant amount of coding redundancy in raw GmAPD data which can be used to minimize storage sizes. We demonstrate that a trivial and simple approach reduces data for some scan patterns. This work represents a first step towards developing robust compression algorithms for raw GmAPD data. We present considerations for future work.

Codon assignment evolvability in theoretical minimal RNA rings

Genetic code codon-amino acid assignments evolve for 15 (AAA, AGA, AGG, ATA, CGG, CTA, CTG. CTC, CTT, TAA, TAG, TCA, TCG, TGA and TTA (GNN codons notably absent)) among 64 codons (23.4%) across the 31 genetic codes (NCBI list completed with recently suggested green algal mitochondrial genetic codes). Their usage in 25 theoretical minimal RNA rings is examined. RNA rings are designed in silico to code once over the shortest length for all 22 coding signals (start and stop codons and each amino acid according to the standard genetic code). Though designed along coding constraints, RNA rings resemble ancestral tRNA loops, assigning to each RNA ring a putative anticodon, a cognate amino acid and an evolutionary genetic code integration rank for that cognate amino acid. Analyses here show 1. biases against/for evolvable codons in the two first vs last thirds of RNA ring coding sequences, 2. RNA rings with evolvable codons have recent cognates, and 3. evolvable codon and cytosine numbers in RNA ring compositions are positively correlated. Applying alternative genetic codes to RNA rings designed for nonredundant coding according to the standard genetic code reveals unsuspected properties of the standard genetic code and of RNA rings, notably on codon assignment evolvability and the special role of cytosine in relation to codon assignment evolvability and of the genetic code's coding structure.
