An improved multilevel coset coding scheme is proposed. By providing interlevel coding between adjacent blocks, the proposed scheme has a multilevel and single-stage coding structure. A simple and flexible bit-plane coding method is developed for scalable audio coding. It is different from the traditional bit-plane coding in that the optimal bit-plane scanning order is adapted to the scale between the energy of the residual signal and the audio mask. Both the perceptual quality and the lossless compression ratio at common lossy bitrates are greatly improved compared with the performance of state-of-the-art scalable audio.

A dual estimate receiver of binary offset carrier (BOC) signals for GNSS applications is described. A unique estimate is derived solely from the code modulation. A more accurate but ambiguous estimate is derived solely from the subcarrier modulation. Any time difference between the two is rounded to the nearest subchip in order to correct the latter estimate. Implementation in the receiver is by a triple digital loop. The full potential accuracy of BOC is then reliably and unambiguously realised.

We study the relationship between the degree of blocking and the amount of resource speedup necessary for blocking switches to possess the capabilities of nonblocking switches. We construct an analogy between switch configurations and the codewords of certain error control codes for which we use space covering ideas to derive relations between speedup and number of switch configurations. To derive the necessary speedup for nonblocking, we use two sphere packing bounds: the Hamming bound and the Gilbert-Varshamov bound. To construct nonblocking switches with a given speedup we use maximum distance separable codes. We consider both multicast and point to point scenarios.

An enhanced degree computationless modified Euclid's (E-DCME) algorithm for Reed-Solomon (RS) decoders is proposed. The algorithm does not require the degree computation and comparison circuits. In addition, the E-DCME algorithm can reduce the number of basic cells and the latency to solve the key equation since it uses new initial conditions. The E-DCME architecture using the Samsung 0.18 mu m cell library consists of only 18 000 gates.

Unidirectional distributed video coding (DVC) is one of the untouched areas of DVC, which has to be necessarily employed when the feedback channel is not available. Thus, to serve that purpose, proposed is a unidirectional distributed video coding using a parallel Wyner-Ziv architecture. Simulation results show that up to 6.5 dB PSNR gain can be obtained with the proposed codec, over the conventional DVC codec [1] with no feedback channel at the same bit rate and the computational cost.

A distributed sensor system employing spontaneous Raman scattering with use of correlation-coding techniques and a single-detector scheme is discussed and experimentally characterised. A sensing distance of up to 8 km is achieved with high spatial and temperature resolutions;use of correlation-coding significantly reduces measurement time and allows use of low-power laser sources.
