A Fast Decoupled Nominal 2-D Direction-of-Arrival Estimation for coherently distributed source

In this paper, we consider the problem of the nominal 2-D (azimuth and elevation) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for coherently distributed source. This new approach is based on the rotation matrices of three parallel uniform linear arrays as deduced, which has decoupled the nominal 2-D DOA from those of angular spreads. The estimator makes use of the eigenvalue decomposition to beamspace data to estimate the nominal elevation DOA. And then using a new cross-correlation matrix, the nominal azimuth DOA estimates are decoupled from the elevation estimates and can be obtained with no searching. The proposed algorithm has lower computational complexity particularly when the radio of array size to the number of source is large, at the expense of negligible performance loss. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

We consider the problem of estimating the central direction of arrival (DOA) of a coherently distributed source. In this paper, the integral steering vector of coherently distributed source is deduced to be a Schur-Hadamard product comprising point source steering vector and a real vector. And then a blind estimator based on second order statistics is proposed to estimate the central DOA without adopting any prior knowledge about the shape of angular signal intensity. The proposed method can be calculated analytically from the known signal model, so a closed-form solution to the central DOA estimation can be derived without any peak-finding searching and eigenvalue decomposition or singular value decomposition. In addition, the proposed algorithm can provide a more precise central DOA estimation using the maximum number of the second order statistics equal to the number of sensors and can give effective estimation even at low SNR. Simulation results show that the proposed method exhibits the attributes, an improved accuracy and a better robustness.

We consider the problem of estimating the parameters-the central direction of arrival (DOA) and angular spread of a coherently distributed source. This problem is encountered due to the presence of local scatterers in the vicinity of a transmitter or due to signals propagating through a random inhomogeneous medium. Since the computational complexity of the parameter estimation is normally highly demanding, we first decouple the central DOA from angular spread. And then the preliminary estimate of the central DOA can be obtained at a signal subspace. Angular spread is estimated by beamspace propagator method sequently. So a two-dimensional maximization problem is replaced by two one-dimension problem. The proposed algorithm has improved precision, low computational cost. Simulations clearly demonstrate that the algorithm is not only effective, but also enjoys better performance.

In this letter, the localization of coherently distributed(CD) is considered. With regard to the direction finding of CD source, the conventional method distributed source parameter estimation(DSPE) can provide stable estimation performance, while it also requires a complex two-dimensional spectral peak search for both nominal direction-of-arrivals(DOAs) and angular spreads. Thus, with rank reduction criterion, we derived a successive propagator method(S-PM) which exploits three decoupled one-dimensional search to replace an extensive one-dimension search to reduce the heavy cost. And the proposed algorithm can avoid the high-complexity eigen-decomposition procedure by using the linear operator-propagator. When compared to the convention ESPRIT-CD [8], S-PM has a better estimation performance with a low complexity. Several simulation results illustrate the effectiveness and improvements of the proposed algorithm.

In this work, an efficient direction of arrival (DOA) tracking method for coherently distributed sources is proposed. The central DOA and angle spread are estimated by the proposed method with a particle filter at each snapshot. The spectrum calculated by the distributed source parameter estimator (DSPE) is used as a pseudo-likelihood function for particle updating, which enables the particle filter to process sensor signals directly without estimating the source amplitude. The proposed method is compared with the total least square estimating signal parameter via rotational invariance technique and the fast implementation of a power iteration subspace updating (FAPI-TLS-ESPRIT). The proposed method is verified by Monte Carlo simulations, and simulation results show that the proposed method can achieve an excellent DOA tracking performance and outperforms the FAPI-TLS-ESPRIT method. In addition, the proposed method can simultaneously estimate the central DOA and angle spread.

Joint Angle Estimation and Signal Reconstruction for coherently distributed sources in Massive MIMO Systems Based on 2-D Unitary ESPRIT

We consider the challenging problem of joint angle estimation and signal reconstruction for coherently distributed (CD) sources in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems employing uniform rectangular arrays. A simplified method inspired by the two-dimensional (2-D) unitary estimating signal parameters via rotational invariance technique (ESPRIT) is proposed to estimate both the central angle and the angular spread without the need for a spectrum peak search and covariance matrix matching process. We first approximate the 2-D generalized steering vector expressed as a Schur-Hadamard product by a pair of one-dimensional generalized steering vectors. Then, we obtain two approximate rotational invariance relationships with respect to the central angles of the CD sources using a linear approximation of the individual generalized steering vectors of the azimuth and elevation subarrays. With the aid of this approximate decomposition, a new unitary ESPRIT-inspired algorithm is conceived to automatically pair the 2-D central angle estimations and a novel method capable of bypassing the high-complexity search process is proposed for angular spread estimation. Furthermore, the closed-form approximate Cramer-Rao lower bounds are derived for the estimators of both the central angles and the angular spreads. The complexity of the proposed estimator is also analyzed. Additionally, the orthogonality of the generalized steering vectors is proved, which enables us to propose a low-complexity method to reconstruct the CD signal matrix by replacing the inversion operator with the conjugate transpose operator. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed approach.

In this paper, we consider a coherently distributed (CD) source model. Since the CD source is characterized by four parameters: central azimuth direction-of-arrival (DOA), azimuth angular spread, central elevation DOA and elevation angular spread, the parameter estimation is normally complex. We propose an algorithm that combines the rotational invariance techniques (ESPRIT) and the generalized ESPRIT algorithm for the 2-dimensional (2D) central DOA estimation of CD sources. Using a pair of uniform circular arrays (UCAs), the proposed solution is able to obtain the central DOAs with both high accuracy and low computational complexity. The central elevation DOAs are estimated by using the rotational invariance relation between the two uniform circular sub-arrays. Based on the centrosymmetric structure of UCA, the generalized ESPRIT algorithm is then applied to estimate the central azimuth DOAs through one-dimensional searching. It is noteworthy that the central DOAs are estimated without any information of the deterministic angular distribution function (DADF). The performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated via computer simulations.

Since the integral steering vector of coherently distributed source can be deduced to be a Schur-Hadamard product comprised of point source steering vector and a real vector, a rotational eigenstructure is showed to exist accurately for two identical closely spaced subarrays. And then the central DOA can be obtained analytically without any peak-finding searching, which significantly reduces the computational complexity. In addition, the proposed algorithm needs little prior knowledge about angular signal intensity. The simulation results illustrate the better performance of the proposed method.

In MIMO channel, the presence of scatters results in angular spread. The point source model corresponding to discrete direction of arrival (DOA) becomes restrictive and leads to DOA estimation errors. To compensate for this effect, the distributed source model is proposed. In this paper, the coherently distributed source model is analysed. Based on that model, the accurate rotation matrix between the bases of the two signal subspaces is deduced. So an algorithm for the central DOA estimation of distributed sources is proposed based on Unitary ESPRIT, which has an ESPRIT-like structure except for the fact that it is formulated in terms of real-valued computations throughout. The algorithm that has lower computational cost can be used for sources with different types of distribution function in MIMO channel. Simulations clearly demonstrate that the proposed method is not only effective, but also increases estimation accuracy compared with standard ESPRIT.

A novel algorithm is proposed for the direction of-arrival (DOA) estimation of coherently distributed (CD) sources. Based on the symmetric property of the uniform linear array (ULA) geometry, the DOA can be estimated by a one-dimensional peak search without estimating the distribution parameters, where N independent CD sources can be distinguished with a ULA of 2N + 1 elements. Compared with the existing algorithms, our proposed algorithm achieves higher element utilization rate with lower computational complexity. Numerical simulation results demonstrate our proposed algorithm provides an improved performance over the generalized eigenvalue decomposition (GEVD) algorithm.
