Frictional Property Depended on Crystal Preferred Orientation Analyzed by a combinatorial technique

An advanced technique for investigating the frictional property of materials depended on crystal preferred orientation is newly proposed. The crystal preferred orientation of ZnO coating films on stainless-steel substrates was markedly changed with the magnitude of an applied load, which was observed by X-ray diffraction analysis with micropoint focus X-ray optics. Also the dependence of the friction coefficient on the crystal preferred orientation was measured. Using the new method, it is possible to find the appropriate crystal preferred orientation for coatings with the desired value of the friction coefficient. Therefore, the technique is expected to be an effective method for tribology research.

Optimization of building form design based on environmental thermal efficiency and spatial thermal efficiency: Integrating technology and design methods☆

With the increasing global attention to sustainable buildings, optimizing building forms to improve environmental thermal efficiency has become a research hotspot. Architectural form not only relates to aesthetic design, but also directly affects energy consumption, comfort, and environmental protection. This study aims to explore the thermal efficiency in architectural form design, propose an effective optimization scheme, and improve the performance of buildings in environmental thermal energy utilization by integrating advanced technology and design methods. We have developed a mathematical model for thermal efficiency and a thermal analysis model to quantify the impact of building spatial form on environmental thermal energy;Designed a thermal energy efficiency control system for building space environment, and verified its effectiveness through overall architecture and system testing;Finally, using intelligent fusion design methods and form optimization design strategies, the building form is optimized and transformed to improve its thermal energy utilization efficiency. The research results indicate that the proposed optimization method can significantly improve the thermal efficiency of buildings and significantly reduce energy consumption. The test results show that the environmental thermal energy control system not only improves the efficiency of building thermal energy utilization, but also enhances indoor comfort. By effectively integrating architectural form design with environmental thermodynamic principles, optimizing architectural form can achieve an improvement in thermal energy efficiency.

Effects of Si Solid Solution in Fe Substrate on the Alloying Reaction between Fe Substrate and Liquid Zn

Effects of Si solid solution in Fe substrate on the formation of Fe-Zn intermetallic phase layers between the Fe(-Si) substrate and liquid Zn were investigated using a combinatorial technique. The formation of zeta-FeZn13 layer was promoted by Si solid solution up to 2 at.% in the Fe substrate but retarded by further solution. The formation of delta(1)-FeZn7-10 phase and Gamma-Fe3Zn10 phase was retarded by Si solid solution up to 10 at.%. The rate of Fe dissolution from the Fe substrate to the liquid Zn region and the Fe/Zn/Si contents in the delta(1) phase were analyzed as a function of Si content in the substrate. The results obtained suggest that the retardation of the Fe-Zn phase formation is caused by a difficulty in the nucleation of delta(1) phase at lower Si contents less than 3 at.% and by a decrease in the rate of Fe dissolution at higher Si contents.

A fast linear-time algorithm to generate non-intersecting closed random orthogonal (4-connected) digital curves of finite length imposed on a background grid is proposed in this paper. A novel timestamp-based combinatorial technique is used so that the curve grows freely without intersecting itself. The combintaorial constraints are further modified to generate 8-connected digital curves. The time complexity of the algorithm is linear in length of the curve, as decisions are made locally based on current-neighbourhood points of the digital curve. The algorithm has been implemented and tested exhaustively and an analysis of the results is also presented.

We propose the "Flux-mediated epitaxy" as a novel concept for the growth of single crystalline films of incongruent, volatile, and high-temperature-melting compounds. In flux-mediated eptitaxy, by supplying materials precursors from the gas phase through the liquid flux films pre-deposited on the substrate, a quasi-thermodynamic equilibrium condition is obtained at the interface between the growing films and the flux films. This process has been demonstrated in this paper by fabricating ferroelectric Bi4Ti3O12 films, which has volatile Bi oxide. The most important step in this process is the selection of the right flux material, which is hard to predict due to the lack of an appropriate phase diagram. In order to overcome this problem, we have selected the combinatorial approach. A series of ternary flux libraries composed of two self-fluxes (Bi2O3 and Bi4Ti3O12) and a third impurity flux were fabricated on SrTiO3 (001) substrates. After that, stoichiometric Bi4Ti3O12 films were grown on each of these flux libraries at a temperature presumed to melt the flux. High-throughput characterization with the concurrent X-ray diffraction method resulted in the identification of CuO containing Bi2O3 as the flux material for the growth of single crystalline Bi4Ti3O12 films. Stoichiometric Bi4Ti3O12 films fabricated by using a novel CuO containing Bi2O3 are qualified to be single crystalline judging from their large grain size and the electrical properties equivalent to bulk single crystal's.

A combinatorial technique was used to determine the optimum catalyst combination for the efficient synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The morphology, length and yield of CNTs greatly differ depending on the catalyst combinations. Among 20 different compositions of mixed catalysts, CNTs of good structure were obtained when the volume ratios of the three precursor solutions-Co(NO3)(2), Ni(NO3)(2) and Fe(NO3)(3)-were 4 : 2 : 4 (island #7) and 1 : 5 : 4 (island # 18).

Photo-induced magnetism in perovskite-type Mn oxides investigated by using combinatorial methodology

We have investigated local magnetic properties of composition-spread Nd1-xSrxMnO3 (NSMO) films under irradiation, using a scanning SQUID microscope. As a result, we found that the stray field generated from domain boundaries was substantially enhanced by laser irradiation (lambda = 532 nm), particularly in the ferromagnetic metal region at x < 0.5. The enhanced filed was maintained, at least, for several hours even after the interception of laser beam. This suggests that the presently observed photoinduced magnetism results from magnetic phase transition triggered by photons. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Computational assignment of protein backbone NMR peaks by efficient bounding and filtering.

NMR resonance assignment is one of the key steps in solving an NMR protein structure. The assignment process links resonance peaks to individual residues of the target protein sequence, providing the prerequisite for establishing intra- and inter-residue spatial relationships between atoms. The assignment process is tedious and time-consuming, which could take many weeks. Though there exist a number of computer programs to assist the assignment process, many NMR labs are still doing the assignments manually to ensure quality. This paper presents a new computational method based on the combination of a suite of algorithms for automating the assignment process, particularly the process of backbone resonance peak assignment. We formulate the assignment problem as a constrained weighted bipartite matching problem. While the problem, in the most general situation, is NP-hard, we present an efficient solution based on a branch-and-bound algorithm with effective bounding techniques using two recently introduced approximation algorithms. We also devise a greedy filtering algorithm for reducing the search space. Our experimental results on 70 instances of (pseudo) real NMR data derived from 14 proteins demonstrate that the new solution runs much faster than a recently introduced (exhaustive) two-layer algorithm and recovers more correct peak assignments than the two-layer algorithm. Our result demonstrates that integrating different algorithms can achieve a good tradeoff between backbone assignment accuracy and computation time.
