algorithmic techniques for computing optimal designs continue being a need in the optimal experimental design field. The increasing interest in finding the optimal experimental conditions makes that new methods are demanded for more complex frameworks showing more realistic situations. Numerical techniques are often the unique viable option for computing these designs since to tackle analytically the problem results impracticable in most of cases. Wynn-Fedorov algorithm, multiplicative algorithm and their modifications are the more frequently used methods in the literature for computing D-optimal designs. However, they are not always suitable and efficient to compute optimal designs since their procedures are very limited by the computational requirements. A new algorithm to obtain D-optimal designs is proposed in this paper. It is based on combining suitable strategies followed by the traditional algorithms. A proof of the convergence is provided and several numerical examples are presented to illustrate its improved results. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Task scheduling for electro-magnetic detection satellite is a typical combinatorial optimization problem. The count of constraints that need to be taken into account is of large scale. An algorithm combined integer programming with constraint programming is presented. This algorithm is deployed in this problem through two steps. The first step is to decompose the original problem into master and sub-problem using the logic-based Benders decomposition; then a circus combines master and sub-problem solving process together, and the connection between them is general Benders cut. This hybrid algorithm is tested by a set of derived experiments. The result is compared with corresponding outcomes generated by the strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm and the pure constraint programming solver GECODE, which is an open source software. These tests and comparisons yield promising effect.

Software systems need to evolve as business requirements, technology and environment change. As software is modified to accommodate the required changes, its structure deteriorates. There is increased deviation from the actual design and architecture. Very often, documentation is not updated to reflect these changes thus making it more and more difficult to understand, manage and maintain these systems. Researchers have applied various techniques to recover the components and architecture of such software systems. The use of clustering techniques has recently been explored for reverse engineering and software architecture recovery. There is a need to tailor clustering algorithms and similarity measures to cater to software. In this paper, we present a new algorithm for finding inter-cluster distance. We compare the performance of some popular similarity measures for this algorithm using two test systems and suggest variations of the similarity measures which show better results for software clustering.

As the age of software systems increases they tend to deviate from their actual design and architecture. It becomes more and more difficult to manage and maintain such systems. We explore the idea of software clustering for reverse engineering and re-modularization. Clustering together software artifacts provides an automatic technique for discovering high level abstract entities within a system. Previous work on software clustering has identified many areas where further investigation is required. Clustering techniques should be tuned to the type of system they are being applied to. In this paper we explore a new clustering algorithm called the 'combined' algorithm which, as our experiments show, provides more promising results for software clustering than the previously used algorithms. We also analyze the behavior of correlation and distance metrics for binary features.

In this paper, multi-objective fuzzy optimization is applied to finding an optimal policy of a fed-batch fermentation process for lactose oxidation from a natural substratum by a strain Kluyveromyces marxianus var. laclis MC 5. The optimal policy consisted of feed flow rate, feed concentration of the substrate and initial concentration of the substrate. The multi-objective problem corresponds to the process productiveness, and the cost of the substrate. A simple combined algorithm guidelines the finding of a satisfactory solution to the general multi-objective optimization problem. The combined algorithm includes a method for random search for finding an initial point and a method based on fuzzy sets theory, combined in order to find the best solution of the optimization problem. The obtained optimal control results have shown an increase of process productiveness and a decrease of the remaining objective functions.

GNSS-based tomographic reconstruction of the ionospheric electron density distribution using a combined algorithm

An algorithm is proposed to image ionospheric electron density (IED) distribution. In this method, generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD) is first used to resolve the ill-conditioned problem in the computerized ionospheric tomography system. Its estimate is then provided as the initial approximation required by the improved algebraic reconstruction technique (IART). Numerical simulation has demonstrated that the combined algorithm is superior to both GSVD and IART for tomographic inversion of IED. Finally, the method is applied to perform inversion of IED using a set of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data during a magnetically disturbed period. The reconstructed results reveal two prominent features of the ionosphere under the disturbed condition. The reliability of the method is also validated by the ionosonde data recorded at Wuhan station, China.

This paper presents the combined algorithm for determination of locations and sizes of capacitor banks in the radial distribution networks for practical minimization of power losses and costs of these losses and banks. The method of concessions and modified PSO-method are applied in the proposed algorithm. Additionally the technicalcoenosis criterion is applied for the specific account of technical and economic factors. The proposed approach allows to obtain the efficient practical solutions and increased stabilization of voltage profile in the radial distribution network. References 9, figures 2, tables 4.

Four-point combined DE/FE algorithm for brittle fracture analysis of laminated glass

A four-point combined DE/FE algorithm is proposed to constrain the rotation of a discrete element about its linked point and analyze the cracks propagation of laminated glass. In this approach, four linked points on a discrete element are combined with four nodes of the corresponding surface of a finite element. The penalty method is implemented to calculate the interface force between the two subdomains, the finite element (FE) and the discrete element (DE) subdomains. The sequential procedure of brittle fracture is described by an extrinsic cohesive fracture model only in the DE subdomain. An averaged stress tensor for granular media, which is automatically symmetrical and invariant by translations, is used to an accurate calculation of the averaged stress of the DE. Two simple cases in the elastic range are given to certify the effectiveness of the combined algorithm and the averaged stress tensor by comparing with the finite element method and the mesh-size dependency of the combined algorithm and the cohesive model is also investigated. Finally, the impact fracture behavior of a laminated glass beam is simulated, and the cracks propagation is compared with experimental results showing that the theory in this work can be used to predict some fracture characteristics of laminated glass. Adaptive combined DE/FE algorithm for brittle fracture of plane stress problems

A novel adaptive combined DE/FE algorithm is proposed to simulate the fracture procedure of brittle materials of plane stress problems. The main concept of the approach is that a model is composed of the finite element completely at the initial stage without any discrete element generated until portion of the model grid becoming severely deformed;and then the model is fragmented into two subdomains, the finite element (FE) and the discrete element (DE) subdomains. The interface force between the two subdomains is calculated by using the penalty method. An extrinsic cohesive fracture model is employed to simulate the brittle fracture procedure only in the DE subdomain. The adaptive algorithm may allow for the use of the accurate and efficient FEs in the lower distorted region and the DEs which are automatically generated in the severely deformed FE region . The feasibility of the adaptive algorithm is validated by the impact fracture simulation of a glass beam. The comparison of calculation time consumption shows that the adaptive algorithm has a higher efficiency than the DEM. At last, the impact fracture behavior of a laminated glass beam is simulated, and the cracks propagation is compared with the experimental results showing that the adaptive algorithm can be implemented to capture some fracture characteristics of brittle materials.
