A wireless technology is required to realize robust transmission of medical images like a radiography image over noisy environment. The use of error correction technique is essential for realizing such a reliable communication, in which a suitable channel coding is introduced to correct erroneous bits caused by passing through a noisy channel. However, the use of a channel code decreases its efficiency because redundancy bits are also transmitted with information bits. This paper presents a joint source-channel coding which maintains the channel efficiency during transmission of medical images like a radiography image. As medical images under the test, we use typical radiography images in this paper. The joint coding technique enjoys correlations between pixels of the radiography image. The results show that the proposed joint coding provides capability to correcting erroneous bits without increasing the redundancy of the codeword.

In this paper, we consider lossy source transmission over a Multiple Access WireTap channel (MAC-WT). In this model, there are two correlated sources, each of them is available at the corresponding encoder. The receiver tries to reconstruct both sources with desired distortions. The sources should be kept secret from an eavesdropper. We propose a joint source-channel scheme for the MAC-WT. In this scheme, each source sequence is mapped to common and private codewords. The common codeword can be decoded by the eavesdropper. The private codeword needs to be kept secret from the eavesdropper by using Wyner's wiretap coding. We also discuss some special cases of the proposed scheme.

Insertion convolutional codes and the underlying principles attract more and more attention, e. g., in iterative decoding, joint channel coding and cryptography or even in channel estimation. Known bits (dummy bits) are inserted into the information bit sequence before convolutional (turbo) encoding. These bits support the decoding of the information bits resulting in an improved decoding quality. Although this concept is widely employed, there does not exist any theoretical evaluation of these codes. We provide a basis for such an evaluation by means of their EXIT charts. We will analytically derive their EXIT charts as a function of the EXIT charts associated with the underlying convolutional code for a transmission over a BEC as well as a binary input/continuous output AWGN channel. These results can be adopted to all applications where perfect information is exploited by a SISO decoder and provide an excellent basis for the analytical prediction of the expected gains.

Symmetric fix-free codes are prefix condition codes in which each codeword is required to be a palindrome. Their study is motivated by the topic of joint source-channel coding. Although they have been considered by a few communities they are not well understood. In earlier work we used a collection of instances of Boolean satisfiability problems as a tool in the generation of all optimal binary symmetric fix-free codes with n codewords and observed that the number of different optimal codelength sequences grows slowly compared with the corresponding number for prefix condition codes. We demonstrate that all optimal symmetric fix-free codes can alternatively be obtained by sequences of codes generated by simple manipulations starting from one particular code. We also discuss simplifications in the process of searching for this set of codes.

We consider the problem of choosing robust codebooks for rate-distortion relative to difference distortion measures, and for capacity-cost relative to additive noise channels. We define an information theoretic formula for the min-max redundancy associated with robust random source codes, and similarly for the loss of robust random channel codes. We then show that this min-max performance can be approached by structured, dithered lattice codebooks. Applications to coding with side information. are discussed.

In this paper, we consider the reliable transmission of correlated sources over the relay channel. The destination wishes to find a lossless reconstruction of both sources. We find the sufficient conditions under which the relay can partially cooperate with the sender to transmit the sources to the destination. The achievability scheme is based on regular encoding/backward decoding strategy. The proposed region includes the known region for multiple-access channel with correlated sources and the achievable rate of relay channel with partial decode-andforward strategy, as special cases. A class of deterministic relay channels is considered. It is shown that the error-free transmission of correlated sources is possible over this channel, using the proposed joint source-channel coding scheme.

The characterization of the optimal joint sourcechannel coding scheme for transmission of correlated sources over multiple-access-relay channels (MARCs) is an open problem. Here, this problem is studied in the presence of arbitrarily correlated side information at both the relay and the destination. Since each transmitter observes only one of the sources, the admissible joint distributions of the sources and channel inputs must satisfy a Markov relationship which constrains their statistical dependence. This observation is used together with the new data processing inequality derived by [Kang and Ulukus, 2011] to obtain two new sets of single-letter necessary conditions. These new conditions are shown to be at least as tight as the previously known ones, and strictly tighter than the cut-set bound.

A likelihood encoder is studied in the context of lossy source compression. The analysis of the likelihood encoder is based on a soft-covering lemma. It is demonstrated that the use of a likelihood encoder together with the soft-covering lemma recovers the point-to-point rate-distortion function, the rate-distortion function with side information at the decoder, and several other important inner bounds for multi-user lossy compression. The likelihood encoder also provides a way for analyzing rate-distortion based secrecy systems. Coupled with hybrid coding, new achievability results are obtained for a joint source-channel secrecy model that outperform an operationally separate source-channel coding scheme.

It is known that, as opposed to point-to-point channel, separate source and channel coding is not optimal in general for sending correlated sources over multiuser channels. In some works joint source-channel coding has been investigated for some certain multiuser channels, e.g., multiple access channel (MAC) and broadcast channel (BC). In this paper, we obtain a sufficient condition for transmitting arbitrarily correlated sources over a discrete memoryless BC with cooperating receivers, where the receivers are allowed to exchange messages via a pair of noisy cooperative links. It is seen that our result is a general form of previous ones and includes them as its special cases.

This work considers the definition of the excess-distortion exponent, used to measure the asymptotic finite blocklength behavior of joint source-channel coding. We arrive at the conclusion that it is not a meaningful measure for the operational tradeoffs of a scheme. We propose a new definition, which makes a distinction between the processing block of the coding scheme (which implies delay and may be connected to complexity), the fidelity blocklength (reflecting the quality of the reconstruction as required by the application), and the resource blocklength (depending on hardware or shared medium considerations). As an aside, the exponent of uncoded schemes is analyzed. This results in finding the joint source-channel coding excess-distortion exponent in some cases where it was not known previously.
