Unequal error protection (UEP) for multimedia communications relies on transmitting more important data through the sub-channels experiencing lower bit error rates (BERs). In radio broadcasting, UEP is implemented by deploying multiresolution (MR) modulations which allow the support for users close to the transmitter with higher perceived recovered image quality, while the users farther away experience the acceptable quality. This paper proposes a new approach to design MR modulations for such an image broadcasting scenario that optimizes the near users quality by exploiting the inherent scalability in image compression and UEP flexibility in 2-D modulation schemes. The proposed new framework for the design of MR modulations effectively integrates constellation distances and priority bits assignments, resulting in two user optimized joint source-channel coding. We present the simulation results for near and far users's image quality in such two-tier optimized radio broadcasting systems.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) systems have important advantages such as large bandwidths and small wavelengths that enable large antenna arrays. However, the cost and power consumption of the hardware elements is extremely high in mmWave. This limitation makes precoding and combining for multiuser MIMO more constrained, making non-viable the use of fully digital precoders. Hybrid analog-digital transceiver architectures allow to reduce radio frequency (RF) hardware complexity but still, a significant number of RF chains is necessary to accommodate the transmissions from multiple users. In this work, we propose to use a zero-delay analog joint source-channel coding method termed scalar quantizer linear coding (SQLC) to reduce the number of RF chains at the receiver of an uplink multiuser mmWave MIMO system. The use of SQLC allows grouping the users in pairs and halves the number of streams to be managed by the multiuser MIMO receiver. In addition, SQLC performs particularly well when users transmit correlated information.

In this paper, we present an empirical rate-distortion study of a communication scheme that uses compressive sensing (CS) as joint source-channel coding. We investigate the rate-distortion behavior of both point-to-point and distributed cases. First, we propose an efficient algorithm to find the 'l(1)-regularization parameter that is required by the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator which we use as a CS decoder. We then show that, for a point-to-point channel, the rate-distortion follows two distinct regimes: the first one corresponds to an almost constant distortion, and the second one to a rapid distortion degradation, as a function of rate. This constant distortion increases with both increasing channel noise level and sparsity level, but at a different gradient depending on the distortion measure. In the distributed case, we investigate the rate-distortion behavior when sources have temporal and spatial dependencies. We show that, taking advantage of both spatial and temporal correlations over merely considering the temporal correlation between the signals allows us to achieve an average of a factor of approximately 2.5x improvement in the rate-distortion behavior of the joint source-channel coding scheme.

We study real-time coding of Gauss-Markov sources over burst-erasure channels. A time-invariant encoder sequentially compresses a sequence of vector Gaussian sources, which are spatially i.i.d. and temporally correlated according to a Gauss-Markov model. The channel is a burst erasure channel that erases up to B packets in a single burst. The decoder is interested in instantaneously reconstructing all the source sequences within a quadratic (mean square error) distortion D, except for packets lost in the erasure burst window. We study the minimum achievable rate for the encoder under these constraints and define it as the lossy rate-recovery function R(B, D). We develop lower and upper bounds for the function and observe that the bounds coincide in the high resolution limit. Numerical comparisons indicate that the proposed joint source-channel coding scheme provides significant gains over a separation based scheme.

This paper provides a necessary condition good rate-distortion codes must satisfy. Specifically, it is shown that as the blocklength increases, the distribution of the input given the output of a good lossy code converges to the distribution of the input given the output of the joint distribution achieving the rate-distortion function, in terms of the normalized conditional relative entropy. The result holds for stationary ergodic sources with subadditive distortion measures, both for fixed-length and variable-length compression. A similar necessary condition is given for lossy joint source-channel coding.

We investigate the performance of analog joint source channel coding systems based on the use of spiral-like space filling curves for the transmission of Gaussian sources over non-linear channels, including channels of the type encountered in underwater acoustic communications. We focus on bandwidth reduction schemes where two i.i.d. samples are mapped to one channel symbol. We evaluate the theoretical limits for some of the non-linear channels and extend existing analog coding schemes to deal with the channel non-linearities, demonstrating that the system performance is very close to the theoretical limits for a wide range of signal to noise ratios.

In this paper we study the analog transmission of discrete-time continuous-amplitude sources over MIMO Rayleigh fading channels at extremely high data rates. Linear and Decision Feedback MMSE MIMO receivers are used to transform the MIMO channel into several SISO channels. We assume the presence of a limited feedback channel that allows continuous adaptation of the encoder parameters to the time-varying channel SNR. Experimental results show that the decision feedback MIMO receiver performs at 2 dB from the theoretical bound when transmitting Gaussian sources.

Consider a source, {X-i, Y-i,}(i=1)(infinity), producing independent copies of a pair of jointly distributed RVs. The {X-i} part of the process is observed at some location, say A, and is supposed to be reproduced at a different location, say B, where the (Yi} part of the process is observed. Similarly, {Y-i} should be reproduced at location A. The communication between the two locations is carried out across two memoryless channels in K iterative bidirectional rounds. In each round, the source components are reconstructed at the other locations based on the information exchanged in all previous rounds and the source component known at that location, and it is desired to find the amount of information that should be exchanged between the two locations in each round, so that the distortions incurred (in each round) will not exceed given thresholds. We first derive a single-letter characterization of achievable rates for a pure source-coding problem with successive refinement. Then, for a joint source-channel coding setting, we prove a separation theorem, asserting that in the limit of long blocks, no optimality is lost by first applying lossy (two-way) successive-refinement source coding, regardless of the channels, and then applying good channel codes to each one of the resulting bitstreams, regardless of the source.

Shift-map codes have been studied as joint source-channel codes for continuous sources. These codes are useful in delay-limited scenarios and also provide better tolerance to deviations of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) from a target SNR, compared to separate source and channel coding. This paper defines a generalized family of shift-map codes that share a strong connection with redundant residue number systems (RRNS), and are henceforth called RRNS-map codes. In the proposed coding scheme, side information about the source allows the decoder to consider only a fraction of the codebook for decoding, with no change in the encoding process. With an appropriately designed RRNS-map code, in this fraction of the codebook, the codewords are much better separated than the original codebook. As a result, RRNS-map codes achieve the same distortion in the mean square error sense as conventional shift-map codes without side information, but significantly outperform shift-map codes when side information is provided to the decoder. This coding scheme is ideally suited to applications where a simple and fixed encoding scheme is desired at the encoder, while the decoder is given access to side information about the source.
