Use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) among people living with Sjögren's: a cross-sectional survey using a modified international CAM questionnaire (I-CAM-Q)

Sj & ouml;gren's is a chronic autoimmune disease with diverse symptomatology, and varying patient satisfaction with management. Patients with chronic conditions are known to be higher users of complementary and alternative (CAM) practices, yet little information regarding extent of such use exists. This paper describes usage of CAM practices among people living with Sj & ouml;gren's, encompassing visits to healthcare providers, CAM practitioners, self-administered CAM and self-help practices. We explored both purposes and perceived helpfulness of the various modalities utilised. 296 respondents completed an online survey administered through Sj & ouml;gren's Research Ireland in 2023. An adapted form of the International complementary and Alternative Medicine Questionnaire (I-CAM-Q) was utilised as the survey instrument. 88.5% of respondents had a formal diagnosis of Sj & ouml;gren's. The majority (93.6%) were female, across all age groups. Over half (52%) of non-retired respondents were at least partially unable to work due to their diagnosis. Over half of all respondents (58.8%) listed at least one concomitant health problem. Most respondents (248, 83.8%) had used some form of CAM within the preceding 12 months. One-in-four had attended a CAM practitioner, most commonly chiropractors (8.4%) or acupuncturists (7.8%). Conventional healthcare and CAM providers were both consulted more commonly for management of chronic conditions or for well-being than for acute symptom management, although this was particularly stark for CAM consultations. 196 respondents (66.2%) reported use of self-administered CAM, predominantly vitamins/minerals or dietary supplements. 69.9% used various self-care practices, with the most reported being meditation, relaxation techniques and prayer. Study of complementary and Integrative Interventions in Pediatric Patients With Serious Illness

Context. Pediatric patients report using complementary and integrative health interventions (CHI) for symptom management. Objective. Feasibility and initial effect sizes of CHI with patients at two children's hospitals. Methods. Using convenience sampling at two academic centers and accepting the wide age range of patients traditionally treated in children's hospitals, we examined feasibility of CHI and outcomes of quality of life (QOL) and symptoms with validated surveys and two physiologic measures. A priori feasibility thresholds were 90% accrual rate and 60% completion of at least two surveys and one CHI session. Results. Over 18 months we accrued 100 participants (Site 1, n = 34;Site 2, n = 66) who completed 811 assessments. Participants were aged 2-29 years (M = 13.5, SD = 5.6), 65% female, 23% from underrepresented populations, 52% with cancer versus other serious illness. Accrual rate was 94%, completion rate was 87%, acceptability was 96%. Ninety-nine participants received 191 total CHI sessions: acupuncture (39%), aromatherapy (35%), creative arts (20%), massage therapy (5%) and hypnosis (1%). After CHI heart rate decreased and symptom scores improved for anxiety, fatigue, nausea, pain, and sadness (Cohen's d effect sizes 0.22-0.99). Adjusted mixed-effects models suggested that the Faces Scale scores improved over time (b = 0.19, P< 0.01). Conclusion. Prospective two-site data collection in relationship to CHI exceeded feasibility thresholds and was acceptable. When given the choice, CHI were popular and may have contributed to improved QOL immediately and longitudinally. These preliminary findings support further study of CHI for targeted symptoms in distinct populations with rigor. (c) 2025 American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. A key component of the sensory experience is flavor, which reflects preferred customer desires for higher-quality fruits, vegetables, and cereals. However, breeders are currently facing difficulty in capturing flavor qualities across crops, which requires the deployment of multi-disciplinary genomics technologies to identify novel alleles and validate the function using genome editing techniques. Recently, Luo et al. (2024) published a work in Molecular Plant, reporting that the flavor traits of waxy corn are influenced by the preferential selection of brassinosteroid and benzoxazinoid pathway genes (ZmBZR1, ZmUGP1, and the benzoxazinoid biosynthetic [bx] genes), which caused significant differences in metabolic pathways of sweet metabolites such as 2,4-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one-glucoside (DIMBOA) and raffinose. Furthermore, flavor perception in the waxy corn population is unaffected by the desired breeding characteristic of “glutinous” texture.

Context. Traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine (TCIM) is being increasingly used to manage symptoms in patients with palliative needs. However, there is a lack of evidence to guide its use in the pediatric palliative care (PPC) setting. Objectives. This study aimed to synthesize and evaluate the current evidence on the effectiveness of TCIM in reducing pain and psychological distress in PPC. Methods. Four English electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between January 2000 and August 2023. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was used to report the pooled magnitude of the treatment effect. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation system was used to assess the quality of the evidence for each treatment outcome. Results. Thirty RCTs were included. The interventions were massage (n = 9), music therapy (n = 6), hypnosis (n = 3), acupuncture, aromatherapy, and other TCIM modalities. Compared with the control interventions, music therapy significantly decreased pain (SMD:-1.07;95% CI:-1.64 to-0.50;P< 0.05;I-2 = 72%) and relieved anxiety (SMD:-0.75;95% CI:-1.35 to-0.15;P< 0.05;I-2 = 74%);massage significantly decreased pain (SMD:-0.74;95% CI:-1.46 to-0.02;P< 0.05;I-2 = 83%) and relieved anxiety (SMD:-0.61;95% CI:-1.21 to-0.01;P< 0.05;I2 = 71%). Hypnosis had significant effects on procedure-related anxiety, pain, and behavioral distress management (P< 0.05). The quality of evidence was rated as "moderate" for the efficacy of music therapy in alleviating pain and anxiety and "low" for the efficacy of all of the other interventions. Conclusions. Existing evidence supports the therapeutic benefits of music therapy, massage, and hypnosis on relieving pain and anxiety symptoms in the PPC setting, though the evidence is of low-to-moderate quality. The use of complementary and alternative medicine among cancer patients in Hawaii

complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are medical products and practices that are not part of standard medical care. Various studies demonstrate benefits of CAM use in alleviating cancer related side effects. However, data involving the use of CAM therapies among cancer patients is limited. Hawaii has a unique and diverse population and trends in CAM use could reveal important aspects of cancer care. We distributed questionnaires to various cancer treatment centers across Oahu. The questionnaires were optional and anonymous. We evaluated 126 questionnaires and analyzed CAM use. We collected participant data including: cancer type, treatments used (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy) and patient demographics (age, gender, ethnicity, income, religion). We found that at least one CAM therapy is used by a majority of patients 72/126 (57.1%), while 54 (42.9%) do not use any CAM therapy. Among the CAM therapies, meditation and herbal supplements were most commonly used 26 (36.1%), followed by massage 25 (34.7%), yoga 18 (25%), CBD 17 (23.6%), THC 16 (22.2%), and acupuncture 14 (19.4%). Stress reduction was the most common symptom benefit noted for meditation, herbal supplement, massage, and yoga. Anxiety was another symptom benefit reported for meditation. THC and CBD are used for sleep, however, CBS was also used for pain reduction together with acupuncture. Among the patients who use CAM therapy (n = 72), 80.6% are female (n = 58) while only 8.3% are male (n = 6). Furthermore only, 18.3% (n = 23) of our respondents have spoken to a clinician about CAM. We discovered that stress reduction is a symptom benefit associated with the most commonly used CAM therapies by cancer patients in Hawaii. Other symptom benefits involve anxiety, pain, and sleep. The modalities utilized were similar to nonpharmacologic therapies recommended by the NCCN guidelines for cancer survivorship, with the exception of herbal supplements. An organic-inorganic hybrid superlattice with near perfect synergistic integration of organic and inorganic constituents was developed to produce properties vastly superior to those of either moiety alone. The complementary hybrid superlattice is composed of multiple quantum wells of 4-mercaptophenol organic monolayers and amorphous ZnO nanolayers. Within the superlattice, multichannel formation was demonstrated at the organic-inorganic interfaces to produce an excellent-performance field effect transistor exhibiting outstanding field-effect mobility with band-like transport and steep subthreshold swing. Furthermore, mutual stabilizations between organic monolayers and ZnO effectively reduced the performance degradation notorious in exclusively organic and ZnO transistors.

High-temperature steam electrolysis by solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) is a method with great potential for transforming clean and renewable energy from non-fossil sources to synthetic fuels such as hydrogen, methane or dimethyl ether, which have been identified as promising alternative energy carriers. With the same technology, fuel gas can be used in a very efficient way to reconvert chemically stored energy into electrical energy, since SOECs also work in the reverse mode, operating as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). As solid oxide cells (SOC) perform at high-temperatures (700-900 degrees C), material degradation and evaporation can occur, e.g., from the cell-sealing material, leading to poisoning effects and aging mechanisms that decrease the cell efficiency and long-term durability. To investigate such cell degradation processes, thorough examination of SOCs often requires a chemical and structural characterisation at a microscopic and nanoscopic level. The combination of different microscopic techniques such as conventional scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) and the focused ion beam (FIB) preparation technique for transmission electron microscopy (TEm) allows for post-mortem analysis at a multi-scale level. These complementary techniques can be used to characterise structural and chemical changes over a large and representative sample area (microscale) as well as at the nano-scale level for selected sample details. This article presents a methodical approach for the structural and chemical characterisation of changes in aged cathode-supported electrolysis cells produced at Riso DTU, Denmark. A new partial-SOI （PSOI） high voltage device structure named CNCI PSOI （complementary n＋-charge islands PSOI） is proposed. CNCI PSOI is characterized by equidistant high concentration n＋-regions on the top and bottom interfaces of a dielectric buried layer of a PSOI device. When a high voltage is applied to the device, complementary holes and electron islands are formed on the two n＋-regions on the top and bottom interfaces, therefore effectively enhancing the electric field of the dielectric buried layer （E1 and increasing the breakdown voltage （BV）, alleviating the self-heating effect （SHE） by the silicon window under the source. An analytical model of the vertical interface electric field for the CNCI PSOI is presented and the analytical results are in good agreement with the 2D simulation results. BV and EI of the CNCI PSOI LDMOS increase to 5 91 V and 512 V/μm from 216 V and 81.4 Vμm of the conventional PSOI with a lower SHE, respectively. The influence of structure parameters on the device characteristics is analyzed for the proposed device in detail.

complementary arsenic speciation methods: A review

The toxicity of arsenic greatly depends on its chemical form and oxidation state (speciation) and therefore accurate determination of arsenic speciation is a crucial step in understanding its chemistry and potential risk. High performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled mass spectrometry (HPLC-ICP-MS) is the most common analysis used for arsenic speciation but it has two major limitations: it relies on an extraction step (usually from a solid sample) that can be incomplete or alter the arsenic compounds;and it provides no structural information, relying on matching sample peaks to standard peaks. The use of additional analytical methods in a complementary manner introduces the ability to address these disadvantages. The use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) with HPLC-ICP-MS can be used to identify compounds not extracted for HPLC-ICP-MS and provide minimal processing steps for solid state analysis that may help preserve labile compounds such as those containing arsenic-sulfur bonds, which can degrade under chromatographic conditions. On the other hand, HPLC-ICP-MS is essential in confirming organoarsenic compounds with similar white line energies seen by using XAS, and identifying trace arsenic compounds that are too low to be detected by XAS. The complementary use of electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) with HPLC-ICP-MS provides confirmation of arsenic compounds identified during the HPLC-ICP-MS analysis, identification of unknown compounds observed during the HPLC-ICP-MS analysis and further resolves HPLC-ICP-MS by identifying co-eluting compounds. In the complementary use of HPLC-ICP-MS and ESI-MS, HPLC-ICP-MS helps to focus the ESI-MS selection of ions. complementary spatiotemporal network for video question answering

Video question answering (VideoQA) is challenging as it requires models to capture motion and spatial semantics and to associate them with linguistic contexts. Recent methods usually treat space and time symmetrically. Since the spatial structures and temporal events often change at different speeds in the video, these methods will be difficult to distinguish spatial details and different scale motion relationships. To this end, we propose a complementary spatiotemporal network (CST) to focus on multi-scale motion relationships and essential spatial semantics. Our model involves three modules. First, multi-scale relation unit (MR) captures temporal information by modeling different distances between motions. Second, mask similarity (MS) operation captures discriminative spatial semantics in a less redundant manner. And cross-modality attention (CMA) boosts the interaction between different modalities. We evaluate our method on three benchmark datasets and conduct extensive ablation studies. The performance improvement demonstrates the effectiveness of our approach.
