Pairwise likelihood estimation and limited-information goodness-of-fit test statistics for binary factor analysis models under complex survey sampling

This paper discusses estimation and limited-information goodness-of-fit test statistics in factor models for binary data using pairwise likelihood estimation and sampling weights. The paper extends the applicability of pairwise likelihood estimation for factor models with binary data to accommodate complex sampling designs. Additionally, it introduces two key limited-information test statistics: the Pearson chi-squared test and the Wald test. To enhance computational efficiency, the paper introduces modifications to both test statistics. The performance of the estimation and the proposed test statistics under simple random sampling and unequal probability sampling is evaluated using simulated data.

Large-Sample Properties of Minimum Discriminant Information Adjustment Estimates Under complex sampling Designs

Minimum discriminant information adjustment (MDIA), an approach to weighting samples to conform to known population information, provides a generalization of raking and poststratification. In the case of simple random sampling with replacement with uniform sampling weights, large-sample properties are available for MDIA estimates of population means and related functions of such means. This research report provides large-sample properties of MDIA estimates under complex sampling designs, such as stratified and two-stage sampling. Cases are considered for both sampling with replacement and sampling without replacement. MDIA is one case of calibration weighting, and this report includes results showing that sample calibration weights can exist only if MDIA weights exist, and MDIA weights can exist in situations where other calibration weights do not. Similarly, results in the report show that calibration weighting does properly generalize MDIA for populations. To illustrate results and explore the use of large-sample approximations in samples of moderate size, an application from Florida middle schools is examined for several sampling procedures to evaluate MDIA estimates for the prevalence of literacy coaches in those schools. © 2020 Educational Testing Service

We investigate the impacts of complex sampling on point and standard error estimates in latent growth curve modelling of survey data. Methodological issues are illustrated with empirical evidence from the analysis of longitudinal data on life satisfaction trajectories using data from the British Household Panel Survey, a national representative survey in Great Britain. A multi-process second-order latent growth curve model with conditional linear growth is used to study variation in the two perceived life satisfaction latent factors considered. The benefits of accounting for the complex survey design are considered, including obtaining unbiased both point and standard error estimates, and therefore correctly specified confidence intervals and statistical tests. We conclude that, even for the rather elaborated longitudinal data models that were considered, estimation procedures are affected by variance-inflating impacts of complex sampling.

Fitting multivariate multilevel models under informative sampling

A model-dependent approach for multivariate multilevel normal modelling that accounts for informative sampling of group and unit level population elements is developed. The approach involves extracting the multilevel model holding for the sample data, given the selected sample, as a function of the corresponding population model and the sample selection probabilities, and then fitting the resulting sample model using Bayesian methods. A model-based simulation study is carried out to study the performance of our approach under one scenario motivated by a Brazilian nationwide proficiency assessment exercise. Results indicate that our approach enables improved inference under the informative sampling considered.

Teacher-centered analysis with TIMSS and PIRLS data: weighting approaches, accuracy, and precision

This paper extends existing work on teacher weighting in student-centered surveys by looking into aspects of practical implementation of deriving and using weights for teacher-centered analysis in the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS). The formal conditions to compute teacher-centered weights are detailed, including mathematical equations. We provide a proposal on how to define the targeted populations as well as how to collect data that is needed to derive teacher-centered weights, yet currently unavailable. We also tackle the issue of teacher nonresponse by proposing a respective adjustment factor, as well as mentioning the challenge of multiple selection probabilities when teachers teach in multiple schools. The core part of the paper focuses on studying the level of accuracy that can be expected when estimating teacher population characteristics. We use TIMSS 2019 data and simulate likely scenarios regarding the variance in weights. The results show that (i) the different weighting scenarios lead to relatively similar estimates;however, the differences between the scenarios are sufficient to justify the recommendation to use correctly derived teacher weights;(ii) differences between estimated standard errors based on complex sampling and corresponding estimates based on simple random sampling are sufficiently consistent to support use of a procedure to estimate standard errors that accounts for both sample weights and the complex sampling design;(iii) sample sizes and variance in weights significantly limit estimate precision, so that total population estimates with sufficient precision are available in the majority of countries but subpopulation features are generally not sufficiently precise. A latent class analysis of cognitive decline in US adults, BRFSS 2015-2020

Background Cognitive decline can be an early indicator for dementia. Using quantitative methods and national representative survey data, we can monitor the potential burden of disease at the population-level. Methods BRFSS is an annual, nationally representative questionnaire in the United States. The optional cognitive decline module is a six-item self-reported scale pertaining to challenges in daily life due to memory loss and growing confusion over the past twelve months. Respondents are 45+, pooled from 2015-2020. Latent class analysis was used to determine unobserved subgroups of subjective cognitive decline (SCD) based on item response patterns. Multinomial logistic regression predicted latent class membership from socio-demographic covariates. Results A total of 54,771 reported experiencing SCD. The optimal number of latent classes was three, labeled as Mild, Moderate, and Severe SCD. Thirty-five percent of the sample belonged to the Severe group. Members of this subgroup were significantly less likely to be older (65+ vs. 45-54 OR = 0.29, 95% CI: 0.23-0.35) and more likely to be non-Hispanic Black (OR = 1.80, 95% CI: 1.53-2.11), have not graduated high school (OR = 1.60, 95% CI: 1.34-1.91), or earned <$15K a year (OR = 3.03, 95% CI: 2.43-3.77). Conclusions This study determined three latent subgroups indicating severity of SCD and identified socio-demographic predictors. Using a single categorical indicator of SCD severity instead of six separate items improves the versatility of population-level surveillance.

Children's exposures to environmental antibiotics are a major public health concern. However, limited data are available on the effects of environmental antibiotic exposures on childhood obesity. Our study aimed to explore this relationship. We conducted a cross-sectional case-control study nested in a population-based survey of primary school students, including 1855 obese and 1875 random selected control children. A total of 10 antibiotics in urine samples were measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Multivariable survey logistic regression was used to assess the associations between environmental antibiotics exposures and childhood obesity. After adjusting for potential confounders, increased odds of obesity were observed in children exposed to tetracycline (OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.09-1.57) and sulfamonomethoxine (OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1-2.05). Two-sample rank tests under complex sampling

Rank tests are widely used for exploratory and formal inference in the health and social sciences. With the widespread use of data from complex survey samples in medical and social research, there is increasing demand for versions of rank tests that account for the sampling design. We propose a general approach to constructing design-based rank tests when comparing groups within a complex sample and when using a national survey as a reference distribution, and illustrate both scenarios with examples. We show that the tests have asymptotically correct levels and that the relative power of different rank tests is not greatly affected by complex sampling.

Over 20 years, interventions have targeted HIV among female sex workers (FSWs) in Kenya given their central role in new infections. To determine the effects of these interventions, we assessed the prevalence and correlates of HIV among a random sample of FSWs and modelled prevalence estimates from studies since 1993. FSWs aged 16-34 years were enrolled through multi-stage sampling. Regression models identified correlates of HIV infection. Generalised linear mixed modelling estimated temporal changes in prevalence between 1993 and 2016. 882 FSWs were enrolled. Prevalence rose from 3.6% among 16-20-year-olds to 31.6% among 31-34-year-old FSWs. Those aged 31 to 34 years had greater odds of HIV compared to those 16 to 20 years (AOR 14.2, 95% CI, 5.5-36.8). Infection was less prevalent among FSWs with tertiary education compared to those with primary or no education (AOR 0.23, 95% CI, 0.07-0.78). There was an overall 30% reduction in prevalence from 1993 to 2016 with an average annual decline of 3%. About one in ten FSWs in Mombasa are currently infected with HIV. Considering FSWs' central role in sustaining population-level infections, these initiatives require continued support, focusing on reducing transmission from older FSWs and those with less education.

Based on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study 2007 study and a follow-up national survey, data for 3,901 Taiwanese grade 8 students were analyzed using structural equation modeling to confirm a social-relation-based affection-driven model (SRAM). SRAM hypothesized relationships among students' perceived social relationships in science class and affective and cognitive learning outcomes to be examined. Furthermore, the path coefficients of SRAM for high- and low-achieving subgroups were compared. Given the 2-stage stratified clustering design for sampling, jackknife replications were conducted to estimate the sampling errors for all coefficients in SRAM. Results suggested that both perceived teacher-student relationships (PTSR) and perceived peer relationships (PPR) exert significant positive effects on students' self-confidence in learning science (SCS) and on their positive attitude toward science (PATS). These affective learning outcomes (SCS and PATS) were found to play a significant role in mediating the perceived social relationships (PTSR and PPR) and science achievement. Further results regarding the differences in SRAM model fit between high- and low-achieving students are discussed, as are the educational and methodological implications of this study.
