Aimed at the accurate measurement of high-speed motion targets in Active Protection System, a capacitive analytic approach, based on complex variable method, was proposed for the planar capacitive coupling sensor working in quasi-electrostatic field. This approach, applying to analyze symmetry model, needs little calculation and more accurate. It directly reflects the relation between the capacitance and electrode structural parameters. The results show that increasing electrode diameter has a major influence on improving the sensitivity, and electrode spacing has no significant effect. Proper electrode spacing needs to be selected in order to meet the detection range and distance. A good agreement was obtained by the comparison of the theoretical results, experiment results and simulation results. These results contribute the experiment schemes improvement and optimization in the future work.

The stress state around lined non-circular hydraulic tunnels below the water table using complex variable method

An elastic plane strain solution for lined non circular hydraulic tunnels, below the water Lable, is presented. Tunnels are assumed to be subjected to uniform ground load, and excavated in a semi-unite aquifer with fully saturated and drained geomaterial. Rock mass and concrete shows a homogenous, isotropic linear elastic behavior, and the non-seepage condition dominates the model. Muskhelishvili complex potential functions combined with conformal mapping method were used to investigate stress field around the tunnels. The solution was compared with ABAQUS Finite element software through an example that showed a good agreement. Moreover, the proposed solution predicted the boundary values of the problem along the internal lining periphery much more accurately than did the ABAQUS solution. In the next part, an attempt was made to reduce the solution to be more practical and simply applicable for pressure tunnels when a large water pressure is exerted on the linings. The significance of the work is in the fact that it incorporates non-uniform distribution of water pressure for groundwater and water inside tunnels, and predicts stress components in a highly accurate and fast process. The method could also be used for the openings in half-plane medium under non-uniform ground load. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Elastic analytical method with machine learning for predicting the stratum displacement field induced by shallow tunneling

Support vector regression (SVR) with sparrow search algorithm (SSA) is developed as the machine learning (ML) model to predict maximum surface settlement smax caused by tunneling. A novel method for calibrating boundary conditions of analytical solution is proposed, where the maximum surface settlement derived by the analytical method is equal to smax predicted by SSA-SVR method. The elastic analytical solution for stratum displacement of a shallow tunnel is presented by the complex variable method, when the calibrated nonuniform displacement function is applied as the tunnel displacement boundary condition. The proposed analytical solution-machine learning (AM) method can predict the stratum displacement field prior to the tunnel excavation. Seventythree tunnel engineering cases are employed to verify the rationality of the proposed SSA-SVR method in predicting smax. The value of R2 in the training and test process is 0.894 and 0.877, respectively. Taking Heathrow Express Trial Tunnel as an example, the potential of the proposed AM method in predicting stratum displacement is presented where the influence of cohesion strength, internal friction angle, Young's elastic modulus of stratum, tunnel radius and depth are considered. The proposed AM method can well predict the stratum surface settlement trough curve, vertical and horizontal displacement at different positions.

Analytical method for mechanical analysis of multiple shallow tunnels with concrete linings

The mechanical evaluation of multiple shallow tunnels is essential for predicting the po-tential risk. In previous analytical studies, the Schwarz alternating method is the unique tool to calculate the mechanical field of multiple shallow tunnels through a complicated iterative process. This work will develop a novel analytical method to calculate the ground movement and stress caused by excavating multiple tunnels. The proposed method in-troduces an enhanced potential function to reformulate the mechanical expressions of multiply-connected domains. And then, solutions of high accuracy can be obtained directly without any iteration. The key advantage of our method is that it can analyze the mechan-ical response of arbitrary-shaped shallow tunnels, including multiple excavations, compli-cated lining structures and multi-layer soil problems. Finally, our analytical solutions are verified by the field measuring data, existing analytical method, and numerical simulation. Semi-analytical Solution of a Shallow Buried Lined Tunnel Under Full-Slip Contact Condition

This paper presents a semi-analytical method for the stress and displacement of a shallow buried lined tunnel based on the complex variable method under the full-slip contact condition, that is, along the interface between the surrounding rock/soil mass and lining, the radial stresses and radial displacements are continuous, and the shear stresses are equal to zero. In the presented solution, the interaction between the surrounding rock/soil mass and lining, as well as the self-weight of rock/soil mass are considered. The equations based on the boundary conditions and continuity conditions are put forward in this paper. A comparison of the stresses and displacements obtained by the analytical solution and ANSYS software shows a good agreement between the two solutions. In addition, the results also satisfied the stress boundary condition, stress continuity condition, and displacement continuity condition. A parametric study was conducted to investigate the influence of the key parameters on Young's modulus and buried depth. Finally, the results of two extreme boundary contact conditions cases, full-slip and no-slip contact conditions, were compared with each other to discuss the effect of the lining and the difference between the two boundary contact conditions.

Explicit Peck formula applied to ground displacement based on an elastic analytical solution for a shallow tunnel

Using the complex variable method,an elastic analytical solution of the ground displacement caused by a shallow circular tunneling is ***-symmetric deformation relative to the horizontal center line of the tunnel cross-section is used as a boundary condition.A comparison between the proposed analytical method and the Finite Element method is carried out to validate the rationality of the obtained analytical *** parameters in the Peck formula,namely the maximum settlement of the ground surface center and the width coefficient of settlement curve,are fitted and *** propose a modified Peck formula by considering three input parameters,namely the tunnel depth,tunnel radius,and the tunnel *** influence of these three parameters on the modified Peck formula is *** applicability of the modified Peck formula is further investigated by reference to six engineering *** ground surface displacement obtained by the explicit Peck formula is in good agreement with the field data,and the maximum error is only 1.3 *** proposed formula can quickly and reasonably predict the ground surface settlement caused by tunnelling.

A coated elliptical compressible liquid inclusion

We study the plane strain problem of a three-phase composite consisting of an internal elliptical compressible liquid inclusion, an intermediate isotropic elastic coating and an outer unbounded isotropic elastic matrix subjected to uniform remote in-plane normal stresses. The perfect liquid-solid and solid-solid interfaces comprise two confocal ellipses. An analytical solution in series form is derived using conformal mapping and analytic continuation. Furthermore, when the compressibility of the liquid inclusion is chosen according to prescribed elastic constants of the coating and the matrix and the given thickness of the coating, we achieve a constant distribution of hoop stress along the entire elliptical liquid-solid interface on the coating side under a remote hydrostatic load. In this case, the compressibility of the liquid inclusion, the internal uniform hydrostatic stress field within the liquid inclusion and the constant hoop stress along the entire liquid-solid interface on the coating side are all unaffected by the aspect ratio of the elliptical inclusion.

AN EDGE DISLOCATION INTERACTING WITH AN ELLIPTICAL INCOMPRESSIBLE LIQUID INCLUSION

We use Muskhelishvili's complex variable formulation to derive a closed -form solution to the plane strain problem of an elliptical incompressible liquid inclusion embedded in an infinite isotropic elastic matrix subjected to the action of an edge dislocation applied at an arbitrary position. The internal uniform hydrostatic tension within the liquid inclusion and the pair of analytic functions characterizing the elastic field in the matrix are completely determined. The image force acting on the edge dislocation is the sum of two parts: the first part has been obtained in previous studies and is due to the edge dislocation near a traction -free elliptical hole;the second modified part is caused by the induced uniform hydrostatic tension on the elliptical boundary: this part has not been considered previously and is given here explicitly.

How do multiple active cellular forces co-regulate wound shape evolution?

Wound closure is a fundamental procedure in many physiological and pathological processes, driven by multiple active cellular forces. In the closure process the wound shape can evolve into round, oval, or slit. However, the underlying mechanisms that determine the mechanical strategies of wound shape evolution are unclear. To understand how these active forces co-regulate wound shapes, we constructed a novel complex variable method-based mechanical model and obtained the stress field and free energy of cell layer with arbitrary wound shape. Our results revealed that there was a stress-driven cell polarization and arrangement around the wound under the cooperative regulation of the tissue pretension, cell protrusion stress and actomyosin ring tension that drove the direction of cell polarization and arrangement for the wound closure. In addition, a 3D phase diagram was obtained from minimizing the free energy of the cell layer that illustrates how the different active cellular forces co-regulate the wound shape evolution. In general, large cellular protrusion induces the evolution of the wound toward slit shape, and strong and medium contractions of the actomyosin ring correspond to the evolution toward oval shape and round shape, respectively. This study reveals a critical mechanism by which living organisms actively control complex processes via the coordination of multiple active cellular forces in tissue repair and development.
