A numerical technique for the solution of eigenstrain problem for square notch with small round corners in plane elasticity

In this paper, the solution of eigenstrain problem for square notch with small round corners is studied. The elastic property of the matrix portion is different to that of the inclusion. complex variable function method is used to solve the problem. The continuation conditions for traction and displacement along interface are formulated. Those conditions are satisfied in the sense of least of residue. Therefore, the final solution will be evaluated from weight residue technique. The continuation condition for stresses along interface is examined, and the stress state in the inclusion is evaluated.

A three-phase elliptical inhomogeneity in nonlinearly coupled thermoelectric materials

We use complex variable techniques to derive a rigorous closed-form solution to the nonlinearly coupled thermoelectric problem associated with a three-phase elliptical inhomogeneity with two confocal elliptical interfaces when the matrix is subjected to uniform remote electric current density and uniform remote energy flux. Explicit expressions for each of the six analytic functions characterizing the thermoelectric fields in the three phases are obtained. The analysis indicates that the internal temperature exhibits a quadratic distribution within the elliptical inhomogeneity.

A new analytical approach is presented for gravity-induced stresses in elastic half plane with a slope. The half plane is mapped onto the unit circle in zeta plane by conformal transformations. The mapping function proposed by Schwarz-Christoffel is irrational and difficult to be applied to the problem in the paper. Therefore, the explicit expression of the mapping function, which is easy to use and has high precision, is proposed through power series approximation. Based on the complex potentials with body force, a simple method for solving gravity-induced stresses which do not involve analytic continuation and Cauchy integral is established. The analytic functions are expressed as power series. Through the stress boundary condition on the ground surface, a set of linear equations with the coefficients of the power series can be directly constructed and solved. The stress results obtained by the presented analytical method agree well with the numerical solution. The stress distributions under different Poisson's ratio and slope angle are studied. Analytical modeling of complex contact behavior between rock mass and lining structure

Based on the nondestructive test data of operating railway tunnels in China, this paper summarizes the basic characteristics of the complex contact behavior between the rock mass and lining structure. The contact modes are classified into dense contact, local non-contact, and loose contact. Subsequently, the corresponding mechanical model for each contact mode is developed according to its mechanical characteristics using the complex variable method. In the proposed mechanical model, a special algorithm is introduced to detect whether the local non-contact zone is re-contacted. Besides, a novel conformal mapping method is also proposed to accurately calculate the mechanical response of the concrete lining. Finally, the accuracy of the proposed method is verified by comparing it with the finite element method(FEM). Several parameter investigations are conducted to analyze the effects of different contact modes on the rock-lining interaction. The results show that:(i) the height of the local noncontact area does not have a significant effect on the contact stress distribution if no re-contact occurs;(ii) backfill grouting can reduce the local stress concentration caused by poor contact modes;and(iii) reducing the friction coefficient of the interface can lead to a more uniform distribution of internal forces in the concrete lining.

Steady-state creep analysis of polymer matrix composites using complex variable method

A new analytical formulation is presented to study the steady-state creep in short fiber composites using complex variable method. In this new approach, both the fiber and matrix creep at low stresses and temperatures. To analyze the crept fiber, a plane stress model was used. Important novelties of the present analytical method are determination of displacement rates with proper boundary conditions in the crept fibers and also using the complex variable method in creep analyzing. It is noteworthy that the method can be useful to study the creep behavior in polymeric matrix composites due to their high capability of creep. Moreover, another significant application of the present method is to study on the creep or elastic behavior of carbon nanotube polymer composites. Finally, the results obtained from the present analytical method (complex variable method) show a good agreement with the existing experimental results.

Analytic study on interaction among shallow multiple circular tunnels under slope terrain

The requirements for transportation often make it unavoidable to excavate shallow multiple tunnels under slope terrain in mountainous areas. An analytical approximate solution of stresses and displacements around multiple shallow circular tunnels under slope terrain that takes the interactions among tunnels into consideration is proposed in this study. Using superposition principle, the original problem is decomposed into a slope plane without tunnels (solid slope) and several infinite planes containing only one tunnel loaded by virtual traction on the tunnel boundary. The solid slope is further divided into several half planes subjected to virtual tractions on the upper surfaces, Combined with complex variable method and Flamant's solution, the virtual tractions acted on the half plane surfaces and tunnels boundaries are obtained through iterations, and thus the stresses and displacement around the tunnels are obtained. The analytical approximate solution is verified by the convergent iteration and the close agreement with the corresponding numerical and theoretical solutions. In addition, the effects of surcharge loads position, tunnels layout, tunnels radius and slope inclination on the ground responses are investigated through parametric analyses. The proposed analytical model is helpful for providing an alternative approach for the preliminary designs of shallow tunnels under slope terrain.

Investigation of the effect of cutout shape on thermal stresses in perforated multilayer composites subjected to heat flux using an analytical method

In the engineering design of perforated composite laminates, understanding the effect of geometrical and material parameters on stress concentration is of vital importance. In this paper, the effect of the cutout shape on the thermal stresses induced in perforated multilayer composite plates under uniform heat flux was studied. The thermal stress concentration was investigated using an analytical method based on the two-dimensional thermoelastic theory, the Lekhnitskii method and conformal mapping by varying the laminate material and the aspect ratio, the bluntness and the rotation angle of the 3- to 6-sided polygonal cutouts. It was found out that the desirable cutout angular position for which the minimum thermal stress concentration was obtained was dependent on the order of the polygonal cutout, whereas the desirable cutout aspect ratio was unity irrespective of the cutout shape. The analytical results were in a reasonable correlation with the finite element results.

Hidden caverns of the stratum are often encountered during the excavation of shallow tunnels in cities. These caverns will cause ground deformations and threaten the safety of tunnel and surrounding buildings. Nevertheless, there are few studies on this problem, and the theoretical research is lacking. In this study, an analytical method is established to solve the problem of a shallow tunnel with a nearby cavern. This method not only takes into account the non-uniform radial displacement on the tunnel boundary and the gravity effect of the excavated soil, but also considers the stress-free condition on the cavern boundary. complex variable method is applied in the problem solving procedure and the Schwarz alternating method is applied to study the interaction between the tunnel and the cavern. And then, the precision of this solution is discussed from the aspects of numerical calculation. Furthermore, the accuracy of the analytical solution is verified by comparing the theoretical initial boundary with numerical results. Finally, the effects of the cavern on ground deformation are analyzed through the parametric studies. The proposed solution provides an insight into the effects of hidden caverns and can serve as a tool for evaluating the ground deformation during the preliminary design.
