Digital technologies (DTs) have fundamentally transformed business landscapes, particularly supply chain (SC) management. This study aims to explore the role of Industry 4.0 DTs in advancing social sustainability in SCs, focusing on transparency, visibility, and traceability as key mediators. The study draws its theoretical foundation from dynamic capabilities theory and complexity theory, providing a dual perspective on the role of DTs in SC sustainability. The study employs survey data collected from 250 experts from the manufacturing sector in Pakistan to evaluate these relationships. The study utilizes partial least squares-structural equation modeling for hypothesis testing. Key findings indicate that Industry 4.0 technologies positively impact social SC sustainability, both directly and indirectly, through enhanced traceability, transparency, and visibility. Notably, traceability emerged as the strongest mediator, highlighting the critical role of tracking in ensuring ethical labor practices and preventing social issues such as modern slavery and unsafe working conditions. The research further suggests that adopting Industry 4.0 technologies can drive improvements in labor standards, environmental practices, and overall SC responsibility. The study contributes to the growing body of literature by demonstrating how Industry 4.0 technologies can serve as strategic tools for addressing social issues within SCs, thereby promoting compliance with global ethical standards and enhancing sustainability.

PurposeInterdependence on the global economy and rapid technological changes raised the degree of uncertainty and complexity, leading to innovation challenges. Innovation depends on knowledge, and the solution might rest on how sound firms manage it, particularly in emerging markets such as India. The purpose of this paper is to examine how firms implement knowledge management (KM) in highly innovation-oriented firms (biotechnology and pharmaceuticals) and the factors affecting its implementation by examining knowledge interactions between individuals. Design/methodology/approachThis study consists of a systematic literature review, a case study with embedded units and the use of grounded theory to analyse the data. The factors emerging from the results were examined from an individual and organisational lens. Next, complexity theory (CT) was used to understand the impact of these factors in KM by facilitating its incorporation as a system. FindingsThe findings of this paper suggest that constant technology adoption increases human-to-technology interaction, higher circulation of existing knowledge and more controlled environments, discouraging individuals from learning or sharing knowledge. From a system perspective, results of this paper suggest that firms self-organise around technology, indicating that innovation decreases as knowledge creation and sharing tend to reduce with lesser social interactions. This study shows the usefulness of using CT in analysing KM for innovation. The performance of the system is analysed based on its constituents and interactions. Originality/valueThis study contributes to advancing CT in KM in the context of innovation in highly knowledge-intensive firms, as few studies were found in the literature.

Blockchain is known for its excellent security performance. However, with more and more blockchain application scenarios, behaviors that break blockchain security are also constantly occurring. To deal with these challenges, this study conducts the traceability analysis of the digital blockchain based on complexity theory. From a methodological perspective, this study first constructed a blockchain architecture based on a circular linked list and a multi-branch path tree. At the same time, the Rateless Erasure Coding (REC) algorithm was combined to optimize the blockchain data encoding mechanism, and a stable blockchain structure was constructed from a theoretical perspective. Subsequently, in order to accurately trace the data, the Byzantine node optimization algorithm in the system was introduced by introducing the hyper-geometric distribution, and the Byzantine nodes were modeled and analyzed to study the complexity of failure. Then, a data traceability model based on blockchain consensus mechanism is proposed. This model uses random election mechanism and information integrity characteristics to realize the location of propagation path. Finally, this study proposed a new blockchain-based multi-node DDoS attack collaborative detection model. Through the test under different data size, the performance of the proposed model is evaluated.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the most significant public health events in human history. Domestic violence cases surged globally during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Taiwan, this trend was particularly evident, with a year-over-year increase in reported cases. This study aims to investigate the complex dynamics of domestic violence in Taiwan during the COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of complexity theory. The researcher employed a qualitative case study method and conducted semistructured interviews with four participants. A cross-case analysis revealed four themes illustrating polymorphic correlations of factors and five themes related to self-organizing behaviors. This study amplifies the voices of domestic violence victims during the COVID-19 pandemic and offers insights into the intricate dynamics between domestic violence incidents and disasters, individuals, and systems. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Software integration testing has always been problematic, and current methods are becoming even less practical given today's networked software components. As the need for a more holistic approach grows, network science, borne of complexity theory, presents opportunities for better understanding and testing of integrated software.

Different developments, including economic crises or costs of compliance have significantly changed the way organisations operate, and impacted their ability to thrive and achieve long-term success. In this complex scenario, professional sport organisations are also exposed to every-day pressures and demands. Using the case of one professional Australian Rugby Union organisation, the present study examines the complexity posed by contemporary changes, including competition and technology, and the way these developments have impacted this sport. Moreover, the study investigates the how and why of organisational change in complex times. Interviews were conducted among Rugby administrators, who hold managerial and marketing roles. The findings emphasise a state of change being implemented within the studied Rugby organisation. Further, differences are noticed between how change is conceptualised and enacted by administrators. The study discusses the implications of the findings for the sport organisation and for professional Rugby in Australia.

In nature, apparently complex behavioural patterns are the result of repetitive simple rules. complexity science studies the application of these rules and looks for applications in society. complexity management opportunities have developed from this science and are providing a revotutionary approach in the constantly changing workplace. This article discusses how complexity management techniques have already been applied to communicable disease management in Wales and suggests further developments. A similar approach is recommended to others in the field, while complexity management probably has wider applications in the NHS, not least in relation to the developing managed clinical networks. The preservation of heritage architecture (PHA) is a complex socio-economic enterprise that transpires space, time and cultural settings. Thus, management and decision making in PHA proceeds within a variety of political and economic pressures from different groups with their own vested interests. Yet another aspect is brought by deleterious physical and environmental factors. The present paper discusses PHA in its practical management within the theory of Complex Systems and some ideas of modern physics.
Drawing from complexity theory, this study explored the dynamic interplay of factors influencing consumer behavior in using drone food delivery services in Africa. It seeks to uncover the complex configurations drivin...
