Design and deployment of distributed numerical applications using .NET and component oriented programming

The common availability of multi-core and networked computers means that there is an increasing need for effective software development methods in order to harness this available power. This paper describes the use of component oriented methods both in the design and deployment of numerical software. The use of interfaces enables both isolation of areas of complexity and physical separation between client and server code. Three methods of deployment of distributed software are considered. Techniques developed for mobile agents were used to implement a method whereby hosts reside on various remote computers, and client programs then send assemblies (partially compiled code) to the hosts as required. The methods are applicable for both direct and iterative methods of equation solution. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

An object-oriented approach is used to develop classes and frameworks for the implementation of distributed iterative equation solution. The software is implemented using the NET framework, and builds upon previous work by the author. Development of the framework for iterative Solution makes good use of interfaces to isolate sources of complexity. The framework is used for three different solution scenarios (i) conjugate gradient iteration oil a single matrix;(ii) conjugate gradient iteration when domain decomposition is used;and (iii) using the Schur complement approach. Moreover, the framework is used for both local and remote objects. The NET framework makes it very straightforward to program distributed applications, and the object-oriented approach greatly facilitates the software development. The framework was used in a finite element program and the speed-up results are shown. (C) 2007 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

component oriented programming (COP) offers promising gains including time-savings, cost-reduction, and increased productivity via components reuse. However, using off-the-shelf components properly and safely is a serious challenge, which implies the significant need to specify and verify the components and their assemblies, up to the level of the full system (built from components) to assure its correctness. Current component modeling frameworks possess none or weak built-in support for the verification. They mainly lack formal analysis tools, do not support all component-based systems features, or they are not easy to use. In this paper, we propose a formal model for designing and verifying component-based systems using rewriting logic and Maude. First, we define a formal meta-model for COP to capitalize all main concepts. Then, we propose a Maude-based transformation engine to generate the formal specification of component-based systems. Hence formal analysis can be performed using Maude tools.

In ERT (Embedded Real Time) software development, software functionality is not the only focus but multi-constraints extra-functionality requirement such as timing, resources constraint, statically predictable, safety-critical, processing power and memory is also important. Besides that, ERT software development involves multi-disciplinary knowledge that includes software, mechanical and electronic engineering fields. To meet these two challenges ERT software development must be able to support the multi-constraint and multi-disciplinary challenges. From this perspective, CBD (component-Based Development) appears to be one of the appropriate approaches to design the ERT software due to the ability of domain experts to interactively compose and adapt sophisticated ERT software which the decrease of development time and improvement of software quality. Existing component infrastructures used in ERT software development are MARMOT (component-Based Real-Time Object-oriented Development and Testing) and PECOS (Pervasive component System). However, these technologies are not enough to support the two challenges in their CBD activities. This paper discusses about the integration of PECOS and MARMOT by mapping the metamodel of the two technologies and proposing a process model. The aim of the integration is to support methodological CBD software to enable systematic development of ERT software with consideration of multi-disciplinary knowledge and multi-constraint.

In this paper, an agent architecture is proposed that can be used to integrate pre-existing components that provide the domain dependent agent functionality. The key integrating feature of the agent is an active message board that is used for inter-component, hence intra-agent communication. The board is active because it automatically forwards messages to components, they do not have to poll the message board. It does this on the basis of message pattern functions that components place on the board using advertisement messages. These functions can contain component provided semantic tests on the content of the message, they can also communicate with any other component whilst they are being applied. In addition an agent management toolkit, called ALFA, is described which offers a set of agent management services. This toolkit consists of a number of servers for storing the code of the components and symbolic descriptions of what agents regarding their component makeup. A third server uses all this information to facilitate launching new agents. Two prototype systems are also presented where the presented infrastructure has been applied. The one involves an agent based system used to control the environmental conditions in a building and the second is an agent based network management application.
