A verification and deployment approach for elastic component-based applications

Cloud environments are being increasingly used for the deployment and execution of complex applications and particularly component-based ones. They are expected to provide elasticity, among other characteristics, in order to allow a deployed application to rapidly change the amount of its allocated resources in order to meet the variation in demand while ensuring a given Quality of Service (QoS). However, establishing a correct elastic component-based application is not guaranteed in Cloud. Indeed, applying elasticity mechanisms should preserve functional properties and improve non-functional properties related to QoS, performance and resource consumption. In this paper, we propose an approach for the verification and deployment of elastic component-based applications. Our approach is based on the Event-B formal method. In fact, we formally model the component artifacts using Event-B and we define the Event-B events that model the elasticity mechanisms (scaling up and down) for component-based applications. Furthermore, we formally verify that our approach preserves the semantics of the component-based applications by using the proof obligations and the ProB animator. Once the elastic component-based applications are validated, they can be deployed in a Cloud environment using an elastic deployment framework which we have developed.

Software deployment process is a sequence of related activities for installing an already developed application into its target environment, and bringing it into an executing state. For complex component-based applications that should be deployed into a large distributed environment, several deployment configurations are typically possible. These deployment configurations can have significant impacts on the application's quality of service properties such as reliability: In distributed systems, the reliability of the application is highly dependent on the reliability of its network, and network failures can have adverse effects on the application's reliability. Thus, one possible way to increase the reliability of a distributed component-based application is to deploy it so that the communications among its components are done as local as possible. In this paper, a graph-based deployment planning approach is proposed for this purpose.

An important requirement for pervasive computing systems is the ability to adapt at runtime to handle varying resources, user mobility, and changing user needs. In this paper, we present an innovative approach to adapt the CORBA component-based applications. This approach proposes to extend the CORBA deployment model to describe the variability of the architecture of applications and to extend the CORBA execution model in order to support adaptation at runtime. The originality of this approach is to consider the adaptation activities as non-functional aspects and to integrate them in the CORBA container.

Executing component-based applications in dynamic distributed environments requires autonomic management to cope with the changes of these environments. However, using a centralized Autonomic Manager (AM) for monitoring and adaptation of a large number of distributed components is a non trivial task. Therefore, we argue for a distributed management by using an AM for each component. These distributed managers should collaborate to avoid conflicting decisions that may entail the application's failure. Towards this objective, we propose a collaborative autonomic management of component-based applications in distributed environments. An application is considered as a composite of atomic or composite components. Each component or composite is managed by its AM that holds local strategies for its reconfiguration. An AM is able to collaborate with other managers in different hierarchical levels for the self-management of the whole application. We show the utility of our approach through a use case in the context of Cloud computing.

Building upon the Service Oriented Architecture, applications can be defined as an assembly of abstract components that are resolved by integrating transparently functionalities provided by heterogeneous resources. However, applications in pervasive environments have to operate under highly dynamic and unpredictable context. This may give rise to several problems denoting that there are mismatches between their descriptions and the execution environments (e.g., heterogeneity of services discovery protocols). Therefore, there is a crucial need to adapt applications in order to overcome these mismatches. In this work, we present a dynamic structural adaptation approach for abstract applications. Our approach is based on the transformation of applications by injecting adapters into their descriptions with respect to their functional behaviour. We propose a fine-grained template to define these adapters. We also give an overview of some results of our evaluations to validate our approach.

During the past decade, the complexity of applications has significantly scaled to satisfy the emerging business needs. Their design entails a composition of distributed and interacting software components. They provide services by means of the business interactions maintained by their components. Such applications are inherently in a dynamic evolution due to their context dynamics. Indeed, they evolve in changing environments while exhibiting highly dynamic conditions during their execution life-cycle (e. g., their load, availability, per- formance, etc.). Such contexts have burdened the applications developers with their design and management tasks. Subsequently, motivated the need to enforce the autonomy of their management to be less dependent on human interventions with the Autonomic Computing principles. Autonomic Computing Systems (ACS) implies the usage of autonomic loops, dedicated to help the system to achieve its management tasks. These loops main role is to adapt their associated systems to the dynamic of their contexts by acting upon an embedded adaptation logic. Most of time, this logic is given by static hand- coded rules, often concern-specific and potentially error-prone. It is undoubtedly time and effort-consuming while demanding a costly expertise. Actually, it requires a thorough understanding of the system design and dynamics to predict the accurate adaptations to bring to the system. Furthermore, such logic cannot envisage all the possible adaptation scenarios, hence, not able to take appropriate adaptations for previously unknown situations. ACS should be sophisticated enough to cope with the dynamic nature of their contexts and be able to learn on their own to properly act in unknown situations. They should also be able to learn from their past experiences and modify their adaptation logic according to their context dynamics. This paper presents the key aspects of a model-based methodology that is proposed for the design of component-based applications with hard real-time requirements. The methodology relies on RT-CCM (Real-time Container component Model), a component technology aimed to make the timing behaviour of the applications predictable and inspired in the Lightweight CCM specification of the OMG. Some new mechanisms have been introduced in the underlying framework that make it possible to schedule the execution of code and the transmission of messages of an application while guaranteeing that the application will meet its timing requirements when executed. The added mechanisms also enable the application designer to configure this scheduling without interfering with the opacity typically required in component management. Moreover, the methodology includes a process for generating the real-time model of a component-based application as a composition of the reusable real-time models of the components that form it. From the analysis of this model the application designer obtains the configuration values that must be applied to the component instances and the elements of the framework in order to make the application fulfil its timing requirements. component-based applications entail a composition of heterogeneous components often running in different contexts. The complexity and dynamic nature of their contexts result in an increasing maintenance efforts. Autonomic computing came to provide systems with an autonomic behavior based on predefined policies. However, in addition to being knowledge-intensive, the constructed policies may easily become obsolete due to context changes. Decision policies should be dynamically learned to self-adapt to context dynamics. However, currently built autonomic systems are tailored to specific management needs, neither reusable for other management concerns nor endowed with learning abilities. In this paper, we introduce a generic framework that facilitates building self-adaptive component-based applications. Unlike the existing initiatives, our framework provides means to transform an existing application by equipping it with a self-adaptive behavior to dynamically learn an optimal policy at runtime. To validate our approach, we have developed a realistic application and used the framework to render it self-adaptive. The experimental results have shown a negligible overhead and a dynamic adjustment of the transformed application to its changing context. They have also shown less frequent time spent in SLA (Service Level Agreement) violations during the learning phase and a better performing application after convergence.

Managed Extensibility Framework allows development of component based .NET applications. However relations between components can be quite complex. So it would be advantageous to visualise these relations to user to simplify the development of component based applications and to provide their editing. This thesis provides a solutioin in form of an editor plugin for the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 allowing to view a composition schema based on analysis of a source code. The editor allows user to edit the generated composition schema and is able to correct the original source code according to user made changes. Possibilities of the analysis and the offered editing actions are influenced by users extensions, the editor is extensible with. As part of this thesis, we implemented the editor with extensions allowing to use it in application projects written in C# language. It helps to detect composition errors in these applications and simplifies changes in the application component architecture.
