Production planning is a key part of production management of manufacturing enterprises. Since computerization began, modern production planning has been developed starting with Material Requirement Planning (MRP), and today Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Advanced Planning and Scheduling (APS), Supply Chain Management (SCM) has been spreading and advanced. However, in the shipbuilding field, rather than applying these general-purpose production planning methodologies, in most cases, each shipyard has developed its own production planning system. This is because the applications of general-purpose production planning methods are limited due to the order-taking industry such as shipbuilding with highly complicated construction process consisting of millions of parts per ship. This study introduces the design and development of the production planning system reflecting the production environment of heavy shipyards in Korea. Since Korean shipyards such as Hyundai, Daewoo and Samsung build more than 10 ships per year (50-70 ships in the case of large shipyards), a planning system for the mixed production with complex construction processes is required. This study draws requirements using PI/BPR (process innovation and business process reengineering) methodology to develop a production planning system for shipyards that simultaneously build several ships. Then, CBD software development methodology was applied for the design and implementation of planning system with drawn requirements. It is expected that the systematic development procedure as well as the requirements and functional elements for the development of the shipyard production planning system introduced in this study will be able to present important guidelines in the related research field of shipbuilding management. One pressing challenge of many modern embedded systems is to successfully deal with the considerable amount of data that originates from the interaction with the environment. A recent solution comes from the use of GPUs, providing a significantly improved performance for data-parallel applications. Another trend in the embedded systems domain is component-based development. However, existing component-based approaches lack specific support to develop embedded systems with GPUs. As a result, components with GPU capability need to encapsulate all the required GPU information, leading to component specialization to specific platforms, hence drastically impeding component reusability. To facilitate component-based development of embedded systems with GPUs, we introduce the concept of flexible components. This increases the design flexibility by allowing the system developer to decide component allocation (i.e., either the CPU or GPU) at a later stage of the system development, with no change to the component implementation. Furthermore, we provide means to automatically generate code for adapting flexible components corresponding to their hardware placement, as well as code for component communication. Through the introduced support, components with GPU capability are platform-independent, and can be executed, without manual adjustment, on a large variety of hardware (i.e., platforms with different GPU characteristics). Modern User Interfaces (UIs) are increasingly expected to be plastic in the sense that they retain a constant level of usability, even when subjected to context changes at runtime. Adaptive UIs (AUIs) have been promoted as a solution for context variability due to their ability to automatically adapt to the context-of-use at runtime. However, development of AUIs is a complex task as different aspects such as context monitoring and UI adaptation have to be supported. In previous work, model-driven engineering approaches were proposed to support the development of AUIs in a systematic and efficient manner. However, existing model-driven development approaches for AUIs face challenges regarding flexibility, reusability, and compatibility to de facto standard UI frameworks like Angular, which hinder their industry-wide usage and adoption in practice. To address this problem and explore an alternative approach, we propose a component-based development framework for AUIs (CoBAUI). CoBAUI defines a modular framework for supporting the development of AUIs and consists of various components to cover aspects like context monitoring and UI adaptation at widget level. The CoBAUI framework was implemented based on Angular and aims to support the development of AUIs through highly reusable and flexible components. We demonstrate the benefit of our CoBAUI framework based on a case study of an AUI for a library web application.

Assessing the Determinants of Adopting component-based development in a Global Context: A Client-Vendor Analysis

component-based software (CBS) development is an attractive proposition to globally distributed software development organizations because of its potential to integrate reusable components in new products. Several organizations have adopted CBS development practices to support their global development processes, a phenomenon referred to as globally distributed CBS development. Many factors influence an organization's decision to adopt globally distributed CBS development practices. The objective of this paper is to systematically assess the determinants that influence the adoption of CBS development practices in global software development organizations. We develop a conceptual research model based on the diffusion of innovation theory and the technology-organization-environment framework. Data collected from 115 participants are used to test the conceptual model. The findings from our study indicate that relative advantage, complexity, technology competence, and top management support are the key determinants for organizations to adopt globally distributed CBS development practices. The assessment of both the direct and total effects of the determinants offers insight into the organization's decision to adopt globally distributed CBS development practices.

The lack of explicit and precise specifications of software interfaces between components often leads to integration issues during development and maintenance. To address this, we have developed a framework named ComMA (component Modeling and Analysis) that supports modelbased engineering of high-tech systems by precisely defining components and their interfaces. The framework is a family of Domain Specific Languages (DSLs) for modeling component interfaces, protocol state machines, time and data constraints, and constraints on relations between events of multiple interfaces. From these models a number of artifacts can be generated automatically to support analysis and various engineering tasks. ComMA has been developed in close collaboration with the Philips IGT business unit that develops minimally-invasive X-ray systems. This paper presents the experience we gained in creating the ComMA framework and its application in industrial practice. We describe and reflect on the technical, organizational and process-related aspects of deploying a non-trivial MDE solution in an industrial setting.

Developing high quality, reliable and on time software systems is challenging due to the increasing size and complexity of these systems. Traditional software development approaches are not suitable for dealing with such challenges, so several approaches have been introduced to increase the productivity and reusability during the software development process. Two of these approaches are component-based Software Engineering (CBSE) and Model-Driven Software development (MDD) which focus on reusing pre-developed code and using models throughout the development process respectively. There are many research studies that show the benefits of using software components and model-driven approaches. However, in many cases the development process is either ad-hoc or not well-defined. This paper proposes a new software development process model that merges CBSE and MDD principles to facilitate software development. The model is successfully tested by applying it to the development of an e-learning system as an exemplar case study.

As embedded systems grow in complexity and scale due to increased functional diversity, component-based development (CBD) emerges as a solution to streamline their architecture and enhance functionality reuse. CBD typically utilizes the C programming language for its direct hardware access and low-level operations, despite its susceptibility to memory-related issues. To address these concerns, this paper proposes TOPPERS Embedded component Systems/Rust (TECS/Rust), a Rust-based framework specifically designed for TECS, which is a component framework for embedded systems. It leverages Rust's compiletime memory-safe features, such as lifetime and borrowing, to mitigate memory vulnerabilities common with C. The proposed framework not only ensures memory safety but also maintains the flexibility of CBD, automates Rust code generation for CBD components, and supports efficient integration with real-time operating systems. An evaluation of the amount of generated code indicates that the code generated by this paper framework accounts for a large percentage of the actual code. Compared to code developed without the proposed framework, the difference in execution time is minimal, indicating that the overhead introduced by the proposed framework is negligible.

The scale and demand for protection functionalities in embedded systems continue to grow as Internet of things technology develops. Simultaneously, multiprocessor real-time operating systems (RTOSs) with memory protection functionalities are broadening in use. On the other hand, the large development effort and poor reusability of multiprocessor RTOS-based development remain hindrances to their use. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a component framework for multiprocessor RTOSs that includes memory protection. In the proposed framework, OS functionalities are reframed as components. The allocation of objects to processors and protection settings, which are supported by the OS, can then be configured based on the component description. Plugins are implemented here to generate files for object generation from component descriptions of OS functionalities. In addition, access to the protection domain can be defined based on the component description. Finally, test programs are used in a performance evaluation. The proposed framework enables extensions to the component-based OS while maintaining most of the functionality and performance of the target OS.

As the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and the fourth industrial revolution advance, smart factories and machines increasingly gain intelligent features that enable the integration of more sophisticated functionalities. Approaches to achieving this intelligence involve both internal systems, such as human–machine interface (HMI), and external systems, such as big data platforms and cloud services. Although current research leans toward studying external systems, accomplishing intelligent functions through such means poses more challenges in achieving real-time responses during machining processes than using internal systems. When intellectualizing machine tools through internal HMI systems, three critical issues must be addressed. First, HMI functions are structured to depend on the HMI itself, leading to a ripple effect where a problem occurring in one HMI function impacts the entire system. Second, owing to differences in development tools and programming languages, the interconnectivity between functions developed by multiple stakeholders to be loaded onto the HMI may suffer, leading to potential inefficiencies and increased maintenance costs. Third, although various types of computer numerical control (CNC) machines need to communicate with the HMI function, the diverse communication methods and development tools used by each CNC manufacturer result in identical intelligent functions being developed separately for each CNC type. To address these challenges, this study proposes an innovative HMI platform capable of executing and developing various intelligent functions. The HMI platform and its major components are designed and implemented through component-based development (CBD). Subsequently, the performance and effectiveness of the platform are validated using quality attribute scenarios.
