Accelerating SCA compliance testing with advanced development tools

In this article, we explore the potential for combining model-based development environments supporting automatic code generation with novel static testing technology to accelerate the SCA compliance testing process. Model-based development and automated testing yield higher regularity and predictability, reducing testing complexity and sidestepping some issues for software intended for deployment on multiple hardware platforms. Further, integrating test tools into the development environment can provide immediate feedback on compliance issues during the development process. As testing moves upstream, the load on certification entities is reduced, and correction of issues becomes more straightforward. Pushing the testing upstream also opens the door to increased customization. We introduce Pitchfork, a language technology that allows users to define specifications as sequences of patterns that can be identified in source code. With Pitchfork, it becomes possible to encapsulate SCA and other properties in a precise, automatically checkable way and distribute them across the SDR community for immediate integration. A natural evolution of this concept is self-certification, in which a robust set of test tools provides a capability for a developer to offer strong evidence of compliance without a formal certification process. Our conclusions are supported with experiences from the use of the NordiaSoftTM SCA Architect IDE and Reservoir Labs' R-Check (c) 0 SCA compliance test tool.

Multiprocessor real-time operating systems (RTOSs) are in high demand to deal with the large complexity of embedded systems. Developers can reduce power consumption, cope with increased size, and improve processing performance using multiprocessor RTOSs. However, multiprocessor RTOSs for embedded systems have two major problems. The handling of kernel objects, functionalities of Multiprocessor RTOSs, makes system reusability difficult. The same goes for the low reusability of interprocessor communication in multiprocessor systems. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a component framework for multiprocessor RTOSs. Kernel objects were componentized based on TOPPERS embedded component systems, a component-based development framework. The proposed framework supports object allocation on multiprocessors, and implements automatic code generation plugins for system reusability and flexible interprocessor communication methods depending on the system. The reusability of the system and inter-processor communication will be verified to be easy while maintaining real-time performance and resource constraints.

Verifying contracts among software components: An ontology-based approach

Context: The goal of component-based Software Engineering (CBSE) is the development of software systems in terms of an assembly of pre-fabricated software components. One of the main aims of CBSE is to increase software reuse whereby a software component becomes part of different software systems. Verification is an important task that ensures contract conformance among components. However, current techniques for verification of component matching are poorly used in industry due to the fact that the use of these techniques is complex since they require specialized expertise. Also, the use of such techniques can be time-consuming. Objective: In this paper, we present Moctezuma, a framework for verifying the matching of software components that does not require the user possessing highly specialized skills and is able to check contract conformance of functional semantics ***: Our approach relies on a core ontology of software components, which captures the concepts, properties, relationships, requirements, and software component functionality. We make use of architecture description languages (ADLs) to specify configurations of component interconnections. Interface contracts are specified with a customized version of CORBA-IDL. We employ ontology reasoning engines to check conformance among interface ***: The accuracy evaluation results have shown that our verifier has a high accuracy for detecting semantics errors. The scalability evaluation shows that our framework exhibits almost a linear behavior. Conclusions: It is concluded that our framework is suitable for verifying the conformance of interface contracts, involving semantics aspects, along a configuration of component interconnections.

Stratospheric balloons have emerged as an affordable and flexible alternative to traditional spacecrafts as they are implemented using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment without following strict methodologies. HERCCULES is a stratospheric balloon mission that aims to characterize the convective heat and radiative environment in the stratosphere. The purpose of this article is to present the HERCCULES onboard software (OBSW) whose design and complexity is comparable to that of satellite systems, since it must control about sixty COTS equipment using a single Raspberry Pi 4B as onboard computer and ensure the real-time requirements. The development of information technology and the improved performance of embedded devices have led to embedded software of increasing scale and complexity. component-based development (CBI)), which divides software into components and subsystems, is effective for efficiently developing large-scale embedded software. However, components created in CBD are not interchangeable dynamically while the application is running, and components written in C must be compiled to change and run. To address this issue, this paper proposes the component framework using mruby to change the component behavior dynamically. The proposed framework works on TOPPERS Embedded component System written in C. Experimental results show that the time it takes to change the behavior of the component is shorter using the proposed framework than using a component written in C. The proposed framework can realize CBD more efficiently.

A platform offering web technologies and interoperable components is proposed, allowing integration of different technologies into a robust system. Key modules are provided in home, to support integration of IoT devices, and in the cloud, offering centralised services and storage. Communication between the two is performed using the open FIWARE-Orion protocol. Data are not tied to methods and resources, so the platform can handle multiple types of requests and data formats. The platform is deployed in HOLOBALANCE, a tele-rehabilitation system for balance disorders, providing surrogate holographic physiotherapists, real time evaluations of task performance and cloud-based data analytics for personalised coaching.

Mediator: A component-based modeling language for concurrent and distributed systems

In this paper we propose a new language Mediatorto formalize component-based concurrent and distributed system models. Mediator supports a two-step hierarchical modeling approach: Automata, which provide an interface of ports, are the basic behavior units;Systems declare components or connectors through automata, and glue them together. With the help of Mediator, components and systems can be modeled separately and precisely. The distributed Mediator and its semantics can be used to capture the inherent real-time and asynchronous behavior in distributed systems. Properties of Mediator models can be specified through CTL* formulae that support various families of properties such as safety and liveness, which can be verified using the nuXmv model checker. A leader election example is presented to show that this language is capable for modeling practical scenarios. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

EX-MAN component Model for component-based Software Construction

In software engineering, composition is the way to reuse existing work. In component-based development (CBD), a number of component models are defined with an emphasis on composition mechanisms for components. With respect to components, current component models can be categorised into three main groups where components are: (i) objects, (ii) architectural units and (iii) encapsulated components. This paper presents a comparison of system construction in these three categories of component models and concludes selecting the X-MAN component model (X-MAN) from the third category for its edge over other models because of its exogenous composition connectors. However, because of the limitations of X-MAN, the use of this component model at a wider scale is hindered. In this paper, we propose extended X-MAN component model (EX-MAN) which addresses the limitations of X-MAN. To demonstrate the EX-MAN semantics for system construction, we have developed a tool exogenous composition framework (ECF). We have described the concepts used in our work using a trivial bank example. To evaluate the feasibility of EX-MAN for system construction, using ECF (a related tool we have developed), we constructed the trivial bank example and also a more complex system, CoCoME, example.

Supporting timing analysis of vehicular embedded systems through the refinement of timing constraints

The collective use of several models and tools at various abstraction levels and phases during the development of vehicular distributed embedded systems poses many challenges. Within this context, this paper targets the challenges that are concerned with the unambiguous refinement of timing requirements, constraints and other timing information among various abstraction levels. Such information is required by the end-to-end timing analysis engines to provide pre-run-time verification about the predictability of these systems. The paper proposes an approach to represent and refine such information among various abstraction levels. As a proof of concept, the approach provides a representation of the timing information at the higher levels using the models that are developed with EAST-ADL and Timing Augmented Description Language. The approach then refines the timing information for the lower abstraction levels. The approach exploits the Rubus component Model at the lower level to represent the timing information that cannot be clearly specified at the higher levels, such as trigger paths in distributed chains. A vehicular-application case study is conducted to show the applicability of the proposed approach.

An Integrated Modeling, Simulation and Analysis Framework for Engineering Complex Systems

The discipline of component-based modeling and simulation offers promising gains in reducing cost, time, and the complexity of model development through the (re) use of modular components. Model-driven development suggests 1) the realization of a complex system using a conceptual model;2) its automatic transformation into an executable form using transformation rules, and;3) its automatic verification using a formal analysis technique for an accurate assessment of its correctness. Both approaches have numerous complementary benefits in rapid prototyping of complex systems using model reuse. In this paper, we propose a framework grounded in a combination of component-based and model-driven approaches to promote rapid prototyping of complex systems through the effective reuse of the simulation models. Our proposed process allows developers to 1) build or select existing components and compose them to formulate the conceptual models of complex systems;2) automatically transform the conceptual models for the rapid implementation and simulation, and;3) automatically verify them as per the requirement specifications. We propose the use of the extended finite-state machine (EFSM) as conceptual modeling formalism, anylogic simulation platform for the implementation, and probabilistic model checking technique using communicating sequential process (CSP) formalism for the verification. Finally, we present a case study of a real-time adaptive cruise control system to demonstrate the functionality of our framework. Our proposed component-based model-driven approach facilitates rapid prototyping and effective meaningful reuse of complex system models, which further accelerates the modeling, simulation, and analysis process of real-time systems and aids in complex engineering designs and implementations.
