Experiences with incorporating formal techniques into industrial practice

We report about experiences at Philips Healthcare with component-based development supported by formal techniques. The formal Analytical Software Design (ASD) approach of the company Verum has been incorporated into the industrial workflow. The commercial tool ASD:Suite supports both compositional verification and code generation for control components. For other components test-driven development has been used. We discuss the results of these combined techniques in a project which developed the power control service of an interventional X-ray system.

A component Model for Model Transformations

Model-driven engineering promotes an active use of models to conduct the software development process. In this way, models are used to specify, simulate, verify, test and generate code for the final systems. Model transformations are key enablers for this approach, being used to manipulate instance models of a certain modelling language. However, while other development paradigms make available techniques to increase productivity through reutilization, there are few proposals for the reuse of model transformations across different modelling languages. As a result, transformations have to be developed from scratch even if other similar ones exist. In this paper, we propose a technique for the flexible reutilization of model transformations. Our proposal is based on generic programming for the definition and instantiation of transformation templates, and on component-based development for the encapsulation and composition of transformations. We have designed a component model for model transformations, supported by an implementation currently targeting the Atlas Transformation Language (ATL). To evaluate its reusability potential, we report on a generic transformation component to analyse workflow models through their transformation into Petri nets, which we have reused for eight workflow languages, including UML Activity Diagrams, YAWL and two versions of BPMN.

The use of components significantly helps in development of real-time embedded systems. There have been a number of component frameworks developed for this purpose, and some of them have already became well established in this area. Even though these frameworks share the general idea of component-based development, they significantly differ in the range of supported features and maturity. This makes it relatively difficult to select the right component framework and thus poses a significant obstacle in adoption of the component-based development approach for developing real-time embedded systems. To provide guidance in choosing a component framework, or at least relevant concepts when building a custom framework, we present a survey, which illustrates distinguishing features and provides comparison of selected modern component-based frameworks for real-time embedded systems. Compared to other existing surveys, this survey focuses specifically on criteria connected with real-time and embedded systems. Further, to be practically relevant, we restrict the survey only to the frameworks that support the full development life cycle (i.e. from design till execution support). In this context, the survey illustrates the complexity of development in each framework by giving specification and code samples.

Representing Micro-Business Requirements Patterns with Associated Software components

This paper proposes representations for micro-business requirements patterns with associated software components. The patterns must be comprehensible enough for micro-business owners without technical backgrounds but at the same time be technical enough for the software developers who use them during the design and development of software. Both objectives are somewhat conflicting and trade-offs have to be made regarding their representations. The pattern representations use a combination of tables, business process models, goal graphs, labels, and UML component diagrams. First, the paper provides an example of a micro-business requirements pattern in the form of an inventory pattern and applies it in a real-world micro-business case, a clothes retail store. Through the example, it shows how the pattern is instantiated and associated with software components. Then, it shows how the patterns are applied in industrial practice, including the software development companies currently adapting and applying them, accompanied by observable strengths and weaknesses.

Data quality becomes an important issue for scientific databases. It is currently managed insufficiently. In component-based and model-driven development it is common to model embedded applications in a platform-independent manner. As an example, some approaches allow development of distributed applications while abstracting away from details of communication between platform nodes. Using such an approach requires to implement this communication before an executable system is deployed. Currently it is common to automatically implement this communication on the level of code, while providing it on the model level is mostly a task that needs to be done manually. In this paper we present a framework for automatic generation of inter-node communication by adding communication components to software models. The framework provides flexibility in the level of automation of generation decisions, and is defined in a way which allows adding support for new communication media or protocols. We have implemented the generation framework for the IEC 61499 standard and provide a prototype generation tool, which we use for examining the applicability of the approach.

Mode switch timing analysis for component-based multi-mode systems

The growing complexity of embedded systems software requires new techniques for their development. A common approach to reducing software complexity is to partition system behavior into different operational modes. Such a multi-mode system can change its behavior by switching between modes under certain circumstances. Another approach to simplifying software development is component-based Software Engineering, which allows a system to be developed by reusable components. Combining both approaches, we get component-based development of multi-mode systems, for which a key issue is the mode switch handling. Since most existing mode switch techniques do not consider component-based systems, we present in this article an approach-the Mode Switch Logic (MSL)-for the development of component-based multi-mode systems. Additionally, we provide a timing analysis for the mode switch of systems using our MSL. Finally, the fundamentals of MSL and its mode switch timing analysis are demonstrated and evaluated by a case study, an Adaptive Cruise Control system. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

component-based development is a relatively new paradigm for software development, compared to more established approaches such as object-oriented analysis and design. The authors conducted a study to examine the ease-of-reuse perceptions of analysts in modeling business systems using a library of components versus a library of objects. A survey of the IT professionals who participated in the study showed that perceived components to be much easier to reuse than objects. Users also expressed significantly higher satisfaction with components and, by a large majority, a preference for reusing components to reusing objects. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The active components approach for distributed systems development

The development of distributed systems is an intricate task due to inherent characteristics of such systems. In this paper these characteristics are categorised into software engineering, concurrency, distribution and non-functional criteria. Popular classes of distributed systems are classified with respect to these challenges, and it is deduced that modern technological trends lead to the inception of new application classes with increased demands regarding challenges from more than one area. One recent example is the class of ubiquitous computing, which assumes dynamic scenarios in which devices come and go at any time. Furthermore, it is analysed to which extent today's prevailing software development paradigms - object, component, service and agent orientation - are conceptually capable of supporting the challenges. This comparison reveals that each of the paradigms has its own strengths and weaknesses and none addresses all of the challenges. The new active component approach is proposed aiming at a conceptual integration of the existing paradigms in order to tackle all challenges in an intuitive and unified way. The structure, behaviour and composition of active components are explained, and an infrastructure for active components is introduced. To underline the usefulness of the approach real-world applications is presented and an evaluation according to the challenges is given.
