Efficient deadlock analysis of component-based software architectures

component-based development (CBD) is a promising approach to master the design complexity of huge software products. In addition, knowledge about the architecture of such component systems can help in establishing important system properties, which in general is computationally hard because of the state space explosion problem. Extending previous work, we here investigate the novel class of disjoint circular wait free component systems and show how we can use the architectural information to establish a condition for the property of deadlock-freedom in polynomial time. Furthermore, we emphasize the importance of this class by showing how to transform an arbitrary system into a disjoint circular wait free one in linear time and in a property preserving way and by providing various computational complexity results. A running example is included. We use the framework of interaction systems, but our results carry over to other CBD models. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A method to support a reflective derivation of business components from conceptual models

To successfully compete in today's volatile business environments, enterprises need to consolidate, flexibly adapt, and extend their information systems (IS) with new functionality. component-based development approaches can help solving these challenges as they support the structuring of IS landscapes into business components with a loosely coupled business functionality. However, the structuring process continues to pose research challenges and is not adequately supported yet. Current approaches to support the structuring process typically rely on procedures that cannot be customized to the designer's situational preferences. Furthermore, they do not allow the designer to identify and reflect emerging conflicts during the structuring. In this paper, we therefore propose a new method that introduces a rational, reflective procedure to systematically derive an optimized structuring according to situational preferences. Using a design science approach, we show (i) how the derivation of business components can be formulated as a customizable multi-criteria decision making problem and (ii) how conceptual models can be used to derive business components with an optimized functional scope. To evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method, we describe its application in a complex case that was taken from a German DAX-30 automobile manufacturer.

The discipline of component-based modeling and simulation offers promising gains including reduction in development cost, time, and system complexity. This paradigm is very profitable as it promotes the use and reuse of modular components and is auspicious for effective development of complex simulations. It however is confronted by a series of research challenges when it comes to actually practise this methodology. One of such important issue is Composability verification. In modeling and simulation (M&S), composability is the capability to select and assemble components in various combinations to satisfy specific user requirements. Therefore to ensure the correctness of a composed model, it is verified with respect to its requirements specifications. There are different approaches and existing component modeling frameworks that support composability. Though in our observation most of the component modeling frameworks possess none or weak built-in support for the composability verification. One such framework is Base Object Model (BOM) which fundamentally poses a satisfactory potential for effective model composability and reuse. However it falls short of required semantics, necessary modeling characteristics and built-in evaluation techniques, which are essential for modeling complex system behavior and reasoning about the validity of the composability at different levels. In this thesis a comprehensive verification framework is proposed to contend with some important issues in composability verification and a verification process is suggested to verify composability of different kinds of systems models, such as reactive, real-time and probabilistic systems. With an assumption that all these systems are concurrent in nature in which different composed components interact with each other simultaneously, the requirements for the extensive techniques for the structural and behavioral analysis becomes increasingly challenging. In this paper we evaluate the use of software architectures in the development of component-based systems. The evaluation is based on the level of support provided by the software architectures formal representatives, namely ADLs, for four established component-based development principles. Specifically, we will describe and evaluate three representative ADLs: ACME, Unicon and Rapide. For each of the above ADLs we give a brief introduction to its purpose, capabilities and special features, and describe the semantics of its main building constructs.

We report about experiences at Philips Healthcare with component-based development supported by formal techniques. The formal Analytical Software Design (ASD) approach of the company Verum has been incorporated into the industrial workflow. The commercial tool ASD: Suite supports both compositional verification and code generation for control components. For other components test-driven development has been used. We discuss the results of these combined techniques in a project which developed the power control service of an interventional X-ray system.

A knowledge based component/service repository to enhance analysts' domain knowledge for requirements analysis

Knowledge of the business domain (e.g., insurance claim, human resources) is crucial to analysts' ability to conduct good requirements analysis (RA). However, current practices afford little assistance to analysts in acquiring domain knowledge. We argue that traditional reuse repositories could be augmented by adding rich faceted information on component/services and artifacts such as business-process templates to help analysts acquire domain knowledge during RA. In this paper, we present the design of a Knowledge based component Repository (KBCR) for facilitating RA. Then, we report on the design and development of a KBCR prototype. We illustrate its application in a system that is populated with components and process templates for the auto insurance claim domain. An empirical study was conducted to assess its effectiveness in improving RA. Results showed that KBCR enhanced analysts' business domain knowledge and helped them better prepare for RA. Our key research contribution is to offer analysts a rich repository (i.e., KBCR) containing domain knowledge that they could utilize to acquire domain knowledge that is crucial for carrying out RA. While repositories of reusable components have been employed for some time, no one has used such repositories to help analysts acquire domain knowledge in order improve the RA of the system. Blackboard architecture to integrate components and agents in heterogeneous distributed eLearning systems: An application for learning to program

To build complete and complex eLearning systems, eLearning engineers are used to applying standards that facilitate sharing information as well as distributed service-oriented architectures that provide reuse and interoperability by means of component integration. These concepts lead us to a component-based development Process that will allow us to implement tools that give full support to the teaching/learning process, taking advantage of the synergy effect created by the integration of the different components. Thus, throughout this article we analyse the proposals from the most relevant consortia concerned with eLearning standards, showing their service oriented approaches and the middleware technologies which can be used to implement them. This analysis will demonstrate that the use of middleware technologies that use the definition of services' interface can limit the reuse and interoperability requisites desired by the main standards consortia. Then, we will show a proposal which tries to solve this shortfall, using a blackboard-based architecture for integrating and communicating heterogeneous distributed components, as well as a user environment that also allows us to perform component integration. As an example, we will demonstrate how we have built an application for learning to program by applying our approach and following a component-based development Process to implement different components (services, agents, clients, etc.) that integrate it. Hence, we will argue that using blackboard architecture and a component-based development Process helps us to solve the identified shortcomings. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The process of implementing and integrating state-of-the-art real-time analysis techniques with an existing industrial tool suite for the development of Distributed Real-time Embedded (DRE) systems offers many challenges. The implementer has to not only code and implement the analysis in the tool suite, but also deal with several issues such as extraction of unambiguous timing and tracing information from the design model. In this paper we present an implementation of the Holistic Response-Time Analysis (HRTA) as a plug-in for an industrial tool suite Rubus-ICE that is used for component-based development of DRE systems. We discuss and solve the issues encountered and highlight the experiences gained during the process of implementation, integration and evaluation of HRTA plug-in. We also provide a proof of concept by modeling an automotive application (autonomous cruise control system) using component-based development and analyzing it with HRTA plug-in.
