Architecting resilient computing systems: A component-based approach for adaptive fault tolerance

Evolution of systems during their operational life is mandatory and both updates and upgrades should not impair their dependability properties. Dependable systems must evolve to accommodate changes, such as new threats and undesirable events, application updates or variations in available resources. A system that remains dependable when facing changes is called resilient. In this paper, we present an innovative approach taking advantage of component-based software engineering technologies for tackling the online adaptation of fault tolerance mechanisms. We propose a development process that relies on two key factors: designing fault tolerance mechanisms for adaptation and leveraging a reflective component based middleware enabling fine-grained control and modification of the software architecture at runtime. We thoroughly describe the methodology, the development of adaptive fault tolerance mechanisms and evaluate the approach in terms of performance and agility. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. This paper presents the MIREA middleware and its support for reusable, reconfigurable and hierarchical design of complex control systems. We review the middleware's component model, key concepts and services, and its support for C++ plus its ability to integrate seamlessly with third-party libraries such as the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)'s Real-Time Control Systems (RCS) library, which has been successfully used in many U.S government-driven intelligent control projects. We also present a case study based on control of our flock of autonomous UAV helicopters. This represents a challenging deployment scenario, but one for which the 4D/RCS architecture is designed and is well suited. Consequently, we discuss our approach to control using a fusion of RCS as a means of architecting a real time control system and MIREA as a means of realising that architecture. Our progress to date suggests that MIREA is indeed well suited as a middleware facilitating the construction of efficient, lightweight, and scalable real-time embedded control systems.

Many vendors or producers of consumer electronics provide web services for collecting data from consumer devices or accessing it from web applications. In this paper, we develop an approach for supporting users of consumer devices in building customized applications on demand. We use Webble technology, a component-based middleware system, as a base technology for distribution of visual components. Users can reuse web services that are connected to data or devices by wrapping those web services as visual components. We demonstrate the potential of the approach with an application example with real world consumer web services.

Context-aware computing has to deal with a huge amount of context, data. Taking into account. the quality of these data becomes a corner stone of an efficient context management solution. Information on the quality of context helps taking appropriate decisions and allows to identify uncertain context information saving processing time for deriving a pertinent description of the observed phenomenon. This paper presents a work in progress for integrating Quality of Context;in COSMOS (COntext entities composition and Sharing) [4,13], a component-based framework for managing context data in ubiquitous environments, and illustrates it throughout the example of the composition of context information to implement a network. connectivity vs energy adaptation situation.

component-based middleware frameworks that support distributed agent societies have proven to be very useful in a variety of domains. Such frameworks must include support for both agents to implement business logic and runtime adaptation to overcome the inherent limitations of unreliable, resource-constrained environments. Regardless of how any particular middleware framework is organized into components, the business logic and adaptation support will inevitably require some crosscutting of the dominant decomposition. In this paper, we discuss a spectrum of dynamic crosscutting techniques in support of runtime adaptation that we have implemented in Cougaar, a component-based service-oriented architecture. We describe these crosscutting techniques and show how they can be used to enhance the flexibility and survivability of agent-based applications.

Domain-specific models increase the level of abstraction used to develop large-scale component-based systems. Model-driven development (MDD) approaches (e.g., Model-Integrated Computing and Model-Driven Architecture) emphasize the use of models at all stages of system development. Decomposing problems using MDD approaches may result in a separation of the artifacts in a way that impedes comprehension. For example, a single concern (such as deployment of a distributed system) may crosscut different orthogonal activities (such as component specification, interaction, packaging and planning). To keep track of all entities associated with a component, and to ensure that the constraints for the system as a whole are not violated, a purely model-driven approach imposes extra effort, thereby negating some of the benefits of MDD. This paper provides three contributions to the study of applying aspect-oriented techniques to address the crosscutting challenges of model-driven component-based distributed systems development. First, we identify the sources of crosscutting concerns that typically arise in model-driven development of component-based systems. Second, we describe how aspect-oriented model weaving helps modularize these crosscutting concerns using model transformations. Third, we describe how we have applied model weaving using a toot called the Constraint-Specification Aspect Weaver (C-SAW) in the context of the Platform-Independent component Modeling Language (PICML), which is a domain-specific modeling language for developing component-based systems. A case study of a joint-emergency response system is presented to express the challenges in modeling a typical distributed system. Our experience shows that model weaving is an effective and scalable technique for dealing with crosscutting aspects of component-based systems development.

Applying the reflective middleware approach in Grid computing

Significant progress has been made in the design and development of object-based distributed systems and, more recently, in component-based reflective middleware platforms-i.e. middleware platforms that, through reflection, can be flexibly configured, and runtime adapted/reconfigured-especially in terms of non-functional properties like quality of service (QoS). In this paper we consider how ideas and principles from such platforms can usefully be applied in a Grid context, specifically, an Open Grid Services Architecture (OGSA) context. To this end, we identify weaknesses in OGSA in the areas of generic service provision, scalability/performance engineering, and, especially, lack of support for QoS specification and realization, and suggest how these can be alleviated. We believe that such areas will become increasingly important as sophisticated e-Science applications start to exploit the potential of OGSA's service-based architecture. We also report on our current research on developing a binding-type framework, a resource management framework, and a set of performance optimizations for an ongoing OGSA implementation we are working on. Caching components for disconnection management in mobile environments

With the evolution of wireless communications, mobile hand-held devices such as personal digital assistants and mobile phones are becoming an alternative to classical wired computing. However, mobile computers suffer from several limitations such as their display size, CPU speed, memory size, battery power, and wireless link bandwidth. In addition, service continuity in mobile environments raises the problem of data availability during disconnections. In this paper, we present an efficient cache management for component-based services. Our ideas are illustrated by designing and implementing a cache management service for CORBA components conducted on the DOMINT platform. We propose deployment and replacement policies based on several meta-data of application components. A novel aspect is the service-oriented approach. A service is seen as a logical composition of components cooperating for performing one functionality of the application. Dependencies between services and between components are modelled in a hierarchical dependency graph.

Dynamic adaptability of distributed components, nowadays scarcely supported, should become a basic principle of future middleware platforms. While most related work envisage somewhat large software reconfigurations, we explore in this paper fine-grained adaptations which intervene within component boundaries. Our experiments are conducted in the framework of the Comet middleware. Dynamic adaptability is supported in Comet through distributed protocols that can be applied at runtime. These protocols may locally denote intrusive modifications which are abstracted through the notion of role. Functional roles are used to describe all-purpose adaptations. We use hook roles as wrappers around existing functionalities. Finally, filter roles interfere with the communication layer. The expressiveness of these complementary abstractions are illustrated in various examples involving non-trivial system adaptations for distributed debugging and communication flow synchronization. A preliminary but promising quantitative evaluation of our adaptation engine under real-world conditions is proposed. We also discuss the difficult but crucial issue of verifying such dynamic adaptations in terms of type, access and security contracts.
