Considerations and challenges for the adoption of open source components in software-intensive businesses

component-based software development is a conventional way of working for software-intensive businesses and Open Source software (OSS) components are frequently considered by businesses for adoption and inclusion in software products. Previous research has found a variety of practices used to support the adoption of OSS components, including formally specified processes and less formal, developer-led approaches, and that the practices used continue to develop. Evolutionary pressures identified include the proliferation of available OSS components and increases in the pace of software development as businesses move towards continuous integration and delivery. We investigate work practices used in six software-intensive businesses in the primary and secondary software sectors to understand current approaches to OSS component adoption and the challenges businesses face establishing effective work practices to evaluate OSS components. We find businesses have established processes for evaluating OSS components and communities that support more complex and nuanced considerations of the cost and risks of component adoption alongside matters such as licence compliance and functional requirements. We also found that the increasing pace and volume of software development within some businesses provides pressure to continue to evolve software evaluation processes. (c) 2021 The Authors. A DSL for WSN software components coordination

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become an integral part of urban scenarios. They are usually composed of a large number of devices. Developing systems for such networks is a hard task and often involves validation on simulation environments before deployment on real settings. component-based development allows systems to be built from reusable, existing components that share a common interface. This paper proposes a domain specific language (DSL) for coordination of WSN software components. The language provides high-level composition primitives to promote a flexible coordination execution flow and interaction between them. We present the language specification as well as a case study of an in-network WSN data storage coordination. The current specification of the language generates code for the NS2 simulation environment. The case study shows that the language implements a flexible development model. Moreover, we analyze the code reusability promoted by the language and show that it reduces the programming effort in a component-based development framework. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. PAMOJA is a Java-based component framework for Grammar-Aware Engineering (GAE) in an Integrated development Environment (IDE). The PAMOJA system is being developed to explore the possibility of component-based software development (CBSD) in the grammarware field. Our main goal is to develop a coherent set of small GAE components, where each component is dedicated to a single well-defined task. The components should fit into a general-purpose framework like NetBeans or Eclipse and it should be possible to manipulate them inside the IDE just like any other component. This paper describes the PAMOJA architecture supporting this development style. We illustrate its use with the aid of examples, and present a case of composing new components at a higher level from the existing GAE components. For this case, we use a hybrid text/structure editor application as an example. This case study serves as a proof of concept of our approach. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

component-based software development (CBSD) is one of the main programming paradigms of the last decades. The main idea of CBSD is to modularize a system as a configuration of multiple interacting components. components interact with each other via dedicated component interfaces hiding a component's implementation and making components interchangeable. In this paper, we present an early investigation of unit testing practices of open source component-based software systems with the goal to find out how component-based software systems are actually tested and how to improve unit testing practices as part of future research. Our preliminary results show that unit tests typically directly test the component implementation and not dedicated component APIs. The method coverage of component APIs varied between 17% and 34% in the analyzed projects.

Dealing with crosscutting and dynamic features in component software using aspect-orientation: requirements and experiences

Coping with crosscutting and dynamic features of software systems has significant impacts on software modularity, reusability, adaptability, and maintainability. However, dealing with such features is a tremendous challenge for different software paradigms, particularly component-based software development (CBSD) where components can be used as black box software units. Fortunately, dealing with crosscutting features is the main focus of aspect-orientation (AO). To compromise, a plethora of different AO and CBSD combinations are available. There is, however, little consensus on how AO and CBSD can be combined and what AO qualities need to be integrated for getting maximum benefits from the combination. In the aim to reach a consensus and increase the understanding of requirements for proper combinations that deal with crosscutting and dynamic features, the authors conduct a domain analysis study of existing combination endeavours;they first identify a set of requirements ought to be fulfilled for proper modelling of crosscutting and dynamic features in component software using AO;second, they group the identified requirements into an evaluation model;third, they check the capability of existing combinations to validate the evaluation model. The study highlighted mandatory requirements for proper combinations and revealed that none of the existing endeavours validates the evaluation model.

Multi-objective optimization framework for software maintenance, component evaluation and selection involving outsourcing, redundancy and customer to customer relationship

In this paper, we propose an integrated multi-objective optimization framework for the development and maintenance of a modular software system. From the perspective of development, other than the cost of a software system, the compatibility of the software components, software reliability, delivery time and execution time for the software, we also consider the evaluation of fitness (using TOPSIS) of software components (COTS and in-house) for non-outsourced modules and vendors for outsourced modules on the basis of many important qualitative attributes. On the other hand, from the perspective of maintenance, we consider the software maintenance cost, the evaluation of fitness (using TOPSIS) of maintenance teams (the outsourced teams and the in-house team) on the basis of many important qualitative attributes, and the interactions between maintenance teams, which we call as the customer to customer (C2C) relationship. Moreover, in order to ensure that the software development company may not prefer to interact with a large number of maintenance teams and that a single team is not always burdened with the maintenance of all the modules, we consider some new cardinality and load balancing constraints. The proposed optimization model is tested using a real-world case study involving e-commerce software development. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Over the last decade, an increasing number of organizations have started software development in a globally distributed environment and at the same time organizations are adopting component-based software development methodologies. Globally distributed component-based software has introduced potential benefits as well as new challenges in the management of software projects. One of the major challenges is that many organizations endorse the process of global software development and adoption of component-based software methodologies prior to testing their management readiness for the globally distributed development activity. The objective of this research paper is to identify challenges associated with managing component-based software development in globally distributed development environment. We used customized search terms, derived from our research question, to systematically identify literature on managing CBS development in a global context. We have identified challenges such as lack of clear component/project ownership, inter-dependency between components, inadequate processes to manage requirements changes, gap in understanding components and processes, organizational cultural differences, lack of efficient task allocation and tracking of bugs among teams as key project management challenges in globally distributed component-based software projects. based on the systematic literature review results, we suggest that there is a need to develop globally distributed component-based software development strategies and standards to help software development organizations in achieving the true potential of software reuse at lower development costs and shorter time-to-market.

New mathematical model for software quality prediction of component-based software using shuffled frog-leaping algorithm

Customer satisfaction and profit making are the two motives that define software quality;therefore, software industry uses new technologies like component-based software engineering, reengineering, etc., to make their software production more profitable. The proposed mathematical model is executed under ISO/IEC 9126 quality assurance model and justifies the definition of software quality given by IEEE 1061(1998). The model calculates the degree of stakeholder satisfaction (Q) by combining the quality attributes and it is validated using Shuffled Frog-Leaping Algorithm (SFLA) which improved the result by 2.46%.

component-based software platforms like OSGi (TM) facilitate the development of complex software. As software systems become more complicated, tool support is often a necessity for assuring the conformance between designed and implemented architectures. We present ARTOS, an architecture toolkit to facilitate the design and conformance analysis of the software running on the OSGi platform. The toolkit consists of an architecture editor and a conformance analyzer. The editor provides definition constructs specific to the OSGi platform and allows architects to wire components by using different kinds of dependency relations. The analyzer adopts a model-based approach, namely reflexion modeling technique, where the concrete and implemented architecture models are compared with each other to build a model of conformance. The use of ARTOS is demonstrated on an industrial case study. Finally, we discuss how the reflexion model technique can be extended to provide users with a conformance view that takes different types of dependencies into account.
