An evaluation of the impact of component-based architectures on software reusability

component-based software development offers a promising solution to the production of complex distributed large-scale software systems. development for reuse-the production of reusable components-and development with reuse-the production of systems with reusable components-provide the characteristics necessary to break the complexity of large-scale distributed systems. Two criteria for reuse in component-based architectures (CBAs) include inter-operability (focus on development for reuse) and integration (focus on development with reuse). Interoperability concerns how well components interact and integration defines how well components plug and play. The objective of this work is to evaluate the impact of three popular CBAs, namely, Enterprise Java Beans, Distributed interNetwork Architecture, and Object Management Architecture on reusability. A framework is introduced for a systematic and comprehensive analysis and evaluation of CBAs. The proposed framework is used to determine which of the above architectures more effectively addresses integration and interoperability. The results allow businesses to determine which CBA, of the above three, is ideal for reuse for a particular application. Further research opportunities in this area are discussed at the end. From Teleo-Reactive specifications to architectural components: A model-driven approach

The Teleo-Reactive approach designed by N.J. Nilsson offers a high-level programming model that permits the development of reactive systems, such as robotic vehicles. Teleo-Reactive programs are written in a manner that allows engineers to define the behaviour of the system while taking into account goals and changes in the state of the environment. This article presents a systematic approach that makes it possible to derive architectural models, with structural descriptions and behaviour, from Teleo-Reactive Programs. The development of reactive systems can therefore benefit significantly from a combination of two approaches: (1) the Teleo-Reactive approach, which is oriented towards a description of the system from the standpoint of the goals identified and the state of the environment and (2) the architectural approach, which is oriented towards the design of component-based software, in which decisions are conditioned by the need to reuse already tested solutions. The integration of this work into a development environment that allows code to be generated via model transformations opens up new possibilities in the development of this type of systems. The proposal is validated through a case study that is representative of the domain, and a survey carried out with post-graduate students. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Effective test case selection for component customization and its application to Enterprise JavaBeans

component users need to customize components they obtain from providers, because providers usually develop components for general use. Although the customization is accomplished by modifying the interface of a component, faults from customization appear when the implementation part of a component and the interfaces interact. The implementation part is a black-box, whose source code is not available to a component user, while the interface is a white-box, whose source code is available for customization. Therefore, customization faults should be tested using both the black-box part and the white-box part of a component. This paper proposes a new technique to test customization faults using software fault injection and mutation testing, and the technique is tailored to Enterprise JavaBeans. Test cases are selected by injecting faults not into the entire interface but into specific parts of the component's interface. The specific parts that are chosen control the effectiveness of the test cases. An empirical study to evaluate the technique is reported. Copyright (C) 2003 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Biomedical Text Mining (BioTM) is providing valuable approaches to the automated curation of scientific literature. However, most efforts have addressed the benchmarking of new algorithms rather than user operational needs. Bridging the gap between BioTM researchers and biologists' needs is crucial to solve real-world problems and promote further research. We present @Note, a platform for BioTM that aims at the effective translation of the advances between three distinct classes of users: biologists, text miners and software developers. Its main functional contributions are the ability to process abstracts and full-texts;an information retrieval module enabling PubMed search and journal crawling;a pre-processing module with PDF-to-text conversion, tokenisation and stopword removal;a semantic annotation schema: a lexicon-based annotator: a user-friendly annotation view that allows to correct annotations and a Text Mining Module supporting dataset preparation and algorithm evaluation. @Note improves the interoperability, modularity and flexibility when integrating in-home and open-source third-party components. Its component-based architecture allows the rapid development of new applications, emphasizing the principles of transparency and simplicity of use. Multi-objective optimization framework for software maintenance, component evaluation and selection involving outsourcing, redundancy and customer to customer relationship

In this paper, we propose an integrated multi-objective optimization framework for the development and maintenance of a modular software system. From the perspective of development, other than the cost of a software system, the compatibility of the software components, software reliability, delivery time and execution time for the software, we also consider the evaluation of fitness (using TOPSIS) of software components (COTS and in-house) for non-outsourced modules and vendors for outsourced modules on the basis of many important qualitative attributes. On the other hand, from the perspective of maintenance, we consider the software maintenance cost, the evaluation of fitness (using TOPSIS) of maintenance teams (the outsourced teams and the in-house team) on the basis of many important qualitative attributes, and the interactions between maintenance teams, which we call as the customer to customer (C2C) relationship. Moreover, in order to ensure that the software development company may not prefer to interact with a large number of maintenance teams and that a single team is not always burdened with the maintenance of all the modules, we consider some new cardinality and load balancing constraints. A language implementation with proper compositionality, enables a compiler developer to divide-and-conquer the complexity of building a large language by constructing a set of smaller languages. Ideally, these small language implementations should be independent of each other such that they can be designed, implemented and debugged individually, and later be reused in different applications (e.g.. building domain-specific languages). However, the language composition offered by several existing parser generators resides at the grammar level, which means all the grammar modules need to be composed together and all corresponding ambiguities have to be resolved before generating a single parser for the language. This produces tight coupling between grammar modules, which harms information hiding and affects independent development of language features. To address this problem, we have developed a novel parsing algorithm that we call component-based LR (CLR) parsing, which provides code-level compositionality for language development by producing a separate parser for each grammar component. In addition to shift and reduce actions, the algorithm extends general LR parsing by introducing switch and return actions to empower the parsing action to jump from one parser to another. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates that CLR increases the comprehensibility, reusability, changeability and independent development ability of the language implementation. Moreover, the loose coupling among parser components enables CLR to describe grammars that contain LR parsing conflicts or require ambiguous token definitions, such as island grammars and embedded languages. Automatic Code Generation for Real-Time Systems: a development Approach based on components, Models, and Frameworks

Real-Time Systems have some characteristics that make them particularly sensitive to architectural decisions. The use of Frameworks and components has proven effective in improving productivity and software quality, especially when combined with software Product Line approaches. However, the results in terms of software reuse and standardization make the lack of portability of both the design and component-based implementations clear. This article, based on the Model-Driven software development paradigm, presents an approach that separates the component-based description of real-time applications from their possible implementations on different platforms. This separation is supported by the automatic integration of the code obtained from the input models into object-oriented frameworks. The article also details the architectural decisions taken in the implementation of one of such frameworks, which is used as a case study to illustrate the proposed approach. Finally, a comparison with other alternative approaches is made in terms of development cost.

Composition of software artifacts modelled using Colored Petri nets

In this work we introduce a new formal model for software components supporting behavioral interpretability based on temporal logic, Petri nets, model checking, and an assume-guarantee strategy to specify and reason about the composition of concurrent component systems. The formal specification and verification strategies, methods, and techniques presented in this work contribute to the development of more dependable component-based software systems, in a modular way. An approach based on two complementary formalisms, Hierarchical Colored Petri Nets (HCPN) and temporal logic, is introduced. HCPN are used to visualize the structure and model the behavior of software architectures and components, and temporal logic is used to specify the required properties of software architectures and component interfaces. An affiliated search system for an electronic commerce and software component architecture

This paper describes an Electronic Commerce Goods Search System (ECGSS) that has functions that increase the precision of search results through training of the search system and uses affiliated business transaction processes. The software component architecture for ECGSS also allows the effective deployment of the system on every local business site, in view of the evolving trend in information technology toward easier configuration and re-usability. A general information gathering system with the infrastructure to accept every Internet communication protocol and access control is described. In this affiliated business transaction model, we classify Internet sites into two groups: a cooperative sites group, and a non-cooperative sites group. While designing the components, we optimized their specifications with respect to the whole architecture analysis, dependencies, and interface types using a component-based software development process. Experiments on the effectiveness of the user training function for the search system and the response time for simple queries for each communication protocol are presented. Comparisons of commercial search solutions and architectural standards of several organizations are also given. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Exception handling in the development of dependable component-based systems

Exception handling is a structuring technique that facilitates the design of software systems by encapsulating the process of error recovery. In this paper, we present a systematic approach for incorporating exceptional behaviour in the development of component-based software. The premise of our approach is that components alone do not provide the appropriate means to deal with exceptional behaviour in an effective manner, hence the need to consider the notion of collaborations for capturing the interactive behaviour between components when error recovery involves more than one component.
