A DSL for WSN software components coordination

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become an integral part of urban scenarios. They are usually composed of a large number of devices. Developing systems for such networks is a hard task and often involves validation on simulation environments before deployment on real settings. component-based development allows systems to be built from reusable, existing components that share a common interface. This paper proposes a domain specific language (DSL) for coordination of WSN software components. The language provides high-level composition primitives to promote a flexible coordination execution flow and interaction between them. We present the language specification as well as a case study of an in-network WSN data storage coordination. The current specification of the language generates code for the NS2 simulation environment. The case study shows that the language implements a flexible development model. Moreover, we analyze the code reusability promoted by the language and show that it reduces the programming effort in a component-based development framework. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. PAMOJA is a Java-based component framework for Grammar-Aware Engineering (GAE) in an Integrated development Environment (IDE). The PAMOJA system is being developed to explore the possibility of component-based software development (CBSD) in the grammarware field. Our main goal is to develop a coherent set of small GAE components, where each component is dedicated to a single well-defined task. The components should fit into a general-purpose framework like NetBeans or Eclipse and it should be possible to manipulate them inside the IDE just like any other component. This paper describes the PAMOJA architecture supporting this development style. We illustrate its use with the aid of examples, and present a case of composing new components at a higher level from the existing GAE components. For this case, we use a hybrid text/structure editor application as an example. This case study serves as a proof of concept of our approach. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Framework-based Approach for Fault-Tolerant Service Robots Regular Paper

Recently the component-based approach has become a major trend in intelligent service robot development due to its reusability and productivity. The framework in a component-based system should provide essential services for application components. However, to our knowledge the existing robot frameworks do not yet support fault tolerance service. Moreover, it is often believed that faults can be handled only at the application level. In this paper, by extending the robot framework with the fault tolerance function, we argue that the framework-based fault tolerance approach is feasible and even has many benefits, including that : 1) the system integrators can build fault tolerance applications from non-fault-aware components;2) the constraints of the components and the operating environment can be considered at the time of integration, which - cannot be anticipated eaily at the time of component development;3) consistency in system reliability can be obtained even in spite of diverse application component sources. In the proposed construction, we build XML rule files defining the rules for probing and determining the fault conditions of each component, contamination cases from a faulty component, and the possible recovery and safety methods. The rule files are established by a system integrator and the fault manager in the framework controls the fault tolerance process according to the rules. We demonstrate that the fault-tolerant framework can incorporate widely accepted fault tolerance techniques. The effectiveness and real-time performance of the framework-based approach and its techniques are examined by testing an autonomous mobile robot in typical fault scenarios.

On the analysis of power law distribution in software component sizes

component-based software development (CBSD) is an active area of research. Ascertaining the quality of components is important for overall software quality assurance in CBSD. One of the important metrics for measuring defects, analyzability, efforts, and cost in CBSD is component size. The paper presents an analytical model based on maximization of Tsallis entropy to obtain closed form expression for component size distribution (maximum Tsallis entropy component size distribution, MTECSD) in steady state. It is found that the component size distribution follows power law asymptotically. A procedure based on generalized Jensen-Shannon measure is developed to estimate model parameters. A detailed analysis of many popular probability distributions along with MTECSD is carried out on many diverse real data sets of component-based softwares. The analysis reveals that lognormal and MTECSD distributions fit well to component sizes in many software conforming the presence of power law behavior. The software whose component size distributions are described by MTECSD are in equilibrium implying that new defects in these software systems occur occasionally. Power law behavior in component sizes also imply high variation leading to difficulty in software analyzability. The precise knowledge of component size distribution also provides an alternative method to compute efforts and cost estimates by modified COCOMO model.

component-based software development is a conventional way of working for software-intensive businesses and Open Source software (OSS) components are frequently considered by businesses for adoption and inclusion in software products. Previous research has found a variety of practices used to support the adoption of OSS components, including formally specified processes and less formal, developer-led approaches, and that the practices used continue to develop. Evolutionary pressures identified include the proliferation of available OSS components and increases in the pace of software development as businesses move towards continuous integration and delivery. We investigate work practices used in six software-intensive businesses in the primary and secondary software sectors to understand current approaches to OSS component adoption and the challenges businesses face establishing effective work practices to evaluate OSS components. We find businesses have established processes for evaluating OSS components and communities that support more complex and nuanced considerations of the cost and risks of component adoption alongside matters such as licence compliance and functional requirements. We also found that the increasing pace and volume of software development within some businesses provides pressure to continue to evolve software evaluation processes. (c) 2021 The Authors. Teaching language processing with the PAMOJA framework

Existing educational tools for language processors have varying capabilities. There is no single tool that covers every aspect of language processors. As a result, there is a possibility that the educator and students will need multiple tools, switching between different specification notations, organization and interpretation of outputs, which could result in a steep learning curve. PAMOJA is a Java-based component framework with a broader scope - it supports construction of grammar-aware applications using the rapid application development style found in modern IDEs such as NetBeans. This paper investigated the possibility of using PAMOJA to develop educational tools for language processing courses. We conducted two major studies. The first study, summarized six design considerations, identified in the literature, for language processor educational tools. Then, we identified three example applications and demonstrated how to construct tools for them using PAMOJA. These include building and visualizing lexical scanners and parsers, as well as constructing a front-end for a software language, using a subset of Java language as an example. The second study evaluated the PAMOJA approach in relation to the identified design considerations, and by analyzing student and educator perceptions. The results seem to demonstrate a positive reception and acceptance, concluding that its application would facilitate the design of language processor teaching tools and learning language processors. The development of robotic applications necessitates the availability of useful, adaptable, and accessible programming frameworks. Robotic, IoT, and sensor-based systems open up new possibilities for the development of innovative applications, taking advantage of existing and new technologies. Despite much progress, the development of these applications remains a complex, time-consuming, and demanding activity. development of these applications requires wide utilization of software components. In this paper, we propose a platform that efficiently searches and recommends code components for reuse. To locate and rank the source code snippets, our approach uses a machine learning approach to train the schema. Our platform uses trained schema to rank code snippets in the top k results. This platform facilitates the process of reuse by recommending suitable components for a given query. The platform provides a user-friendly interface where developers can enter queries (specifications) for code search. The evaluation shows that our platform effectively ranks the source code snippets and outperforms existing baselines. A survey is also conducted to affirm the viability of the proposed methodology.

Object-oriented programming is not enough influential to handle the changing requirements. component-based software development is a paradigm, which develops software systems that are integrated with the existing software component as plug-ins, which can be reused again and again. Hence, reusability of a component is more important than other quality factors of a software system. Selection of the most reusable software component is one of the critical activity for developing a quality system. Reusability has few types of sub-quality factors, which have considerable impact on reusability either directly or indirectly. In this paper Fuzzy-Analytic Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy-A HP) model is proposed for component selection using reusability as an important quality factor of a software component. Proposed model selects components with concurrent consideration of multiple criteria and ranks the components according to their reusability values. An empirical analysis has also been carried out on six industrial components, which are used for cleaning the system or improving system performance. A code is developed in Java for the proposed model, which successfully assigns the rank to each component based on overall performance index value. The result shows that the proposed approach is suitable for identifying the best software component in efficient and simple manner.

Nowadays, one of the most challenging tasks in component-based software development processes is to discover suitable reusable assets that fulfill the requirements of a particular software system under development. In such a context, this paper presents an XML-based asset representation model for describing all kinds of software assets that can be produced or reused within component-based software development processes. The proposed model is based on asset metadata that provides effective means for developing universal repository systems that can deal with discovery, retrieval and composition of software components.

component-based software development has been increasingly adopted as a standard engineering practice to build large systems with prefabricated components. Although this development method enjoys the great benefits of reusing valuable software assets, reducing development costs, improving productivity, etc., it also poses serious challenges to the quality assurance problem of component-based systems, since prefabricated components can not be simply trusted and they could be a new source of system failures. Solving this problem is of vital importance to safety-critical and mission-critical systems. This paper introduces a decompositional verification approach for component-based systems through both formal analysis (model-checking) and traditional software testing.
