This paper investigates reuse-based software development with the assistance of a generic industrial process model, the supply chain, to demonstrate how software components may be systematically manufactured and consumed. The main role of software component manufacturer is to deliver application-specific products in a cost-effective and quality assured way to the consumers. One of the key factors for the success of software reuse depends on the effective management of software components along the supply chain. This leads to the several technical issues in relation to software engineering, knowledge management, and data mining of how the reusable software assets should be accumulated and used.

Modern modelling languages provide dedicated features to support the detailed design of complex systems from different domains. Nevertheless, especially general-purpose languages provide extensive syntactical expressiveness that, in some cases, may be hard to align with well-defined semantics. This is often inevitable due to the fact that, in order for model-driven approaches to be fruitful, modelling activities should require a lower effort than code-based approaches. In the case of UML and component-based design, precise syntactical definition of the number of component and port instances building up the system is provided. How component instances are explicitly connected to each other via ports is left as a semantic variation point in order for the modeller to freely interpret the related metamodel semantics. On the one hand, in order to allow model analysability, simulation and generation of target code, ad-hoc choices regarding this semantics need to be taken. On the other hand, leaving the burden of this task to the developers is often unthinkable for complex industrial systems (composed by a number of components and connections in the magnitude of 10(4) and above). Therefore we propose a set of semantic rules for the establishment of explicit links between component instances and provide a solution for the automatic generation of these links by applying the defined rules.

By focussing on Cyber Physical Systems (CPS), this paper investigates how component-based principles and practices are used and support the activity of architecting CPS. For doing so, by running a systematic process, we selected 49 primary studies from the most important publishers search engines. Those papers have been analyzed and their contents classified according to the Classification Framework for component Models proposed in our previous work. The results show that the main concerns handled by CPS component models are those of integration, performance, and maintainability. The instruments to satisfy those concerns, while architecting CPS, are ad-hoc software/system architecture, model-based approaches, architectural and component languages, and design. The IEC 61499 standard with its functions block is remarkably used to drive the work on six papers. Java is the most frequently used programming language used for implementing the components. components are deployed mostly at compile time. Interfaces are almost equally distributed into port-based and operation-based. Overall, the results show a transition of technologies and approaches used in Embedded Systems to CPS, but still lacking methods for integrated architecting, in particular in incremental development.

Refactoring has been proposed as a de facto behavior-preserving mean to eliminate bad smells. However manually determining and performing useful refactorings is a though challenge because seemingly useful refactorings can improve some aspect of a software while making another aspect worse. Therefore it has been proposed to view object-oriented automated refactoring as a search-based technique. Nevertheless the review of the literature shows that automated refactoring of component-based software has not been investigated yet. Recently a catalogue of component-relevant bad smells has been proposed in the literature but there is a lack of component-relevant refactorings. In this paper we propose detection rules for component-relevant bad smells as well as a catalogue of component-relevant refactorings. Then we rely on these two elements to propose a search-based approach for automated refactoring of component-based software systems by detecting and eliminating bad smells. Finally, we experiment our approach on a medium-sized component-based software and we assess the efficieny and accuracy of our approach.

software engineering researchers have extensively explored the reuse of components at source-code level. Contracts explicitly describe component behaviour, reducing development risk by exposing potential incompatibilities early in the development process. But to benefit fully from reuse, developers of safety-critical systems must also reuse safety evidence. Full reuse would require both extending the existing notion of component contracts to cover safety properties and using these contracts in both component selection and system certification. This is not as simple as it first appears. Much of the review, analysis, and test evidence developers provide during certification is system-specific. This makes it difficult to define safety contracts that facilitate both selecting components to reuse and certifying systems. In this paper, we explore the definition and use of safety contracts, identify challenges to component-based software reuse safety-critical systems, present examples to illustrate several key difficulties, and discuss potential solutions to these problems.

One of the current approaches to software engineering is component-based software engineering (CBSE). As its name implies, CBSE has to do with the development of open and distributed systems by assembling a set of components. However in practice it is difficult to follow the characteristics demanded by this working philosophy because when developers want to update or modify a component, they do not have the required and sufficient information to determine the degree of impact that a change will have. In order to understand the management of components in CBSE ten experts in software development were interviewed. With the information obtained, the requirements for a system that we call component Presence Notifier were defined. This system supports the extraction of information from different repositories of the organization and presents it as elements of a graphical user interface (GUI). This information is provided to the developer while working with any of the registered components in order to increase his/her awareness of the impact of the proposed modification. As future work, this prototype will be evaluated for usability by a group of distributed software developers.

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of COMP Superscalar, a new and componentised version of the GRID superscalar framework that enables the easy development of Grid-unaware applications. By means of a simple programming model, COMP Superscalar keeps the Grid as transparent as possible to the programmer. Moreover, the performance of the applications is optimized by exploiting their inherent concurrency when executing them on the Grid. The runtime of COMP Superscalar has been designed to follow the Grid component Model (GCM) and is therefore formed by several components, each one encapsulating a given functionality identified in GRID superscalar.

CoolBOT is a C++ distributed component-based programming framework for robotics. A system can be seen as a distributed network of software components interconnected by port connections where system behavior emerges from the interaction and independent execution of the components integrating the system. Recently we have endowed CoolHOT with two new types of software components: views and probes. On one side, in order to separate and decouple robot control from graphical displays, we have introduced the concept of view as an integrable, composite and reusable graphical interface available for CoolBOT system integrators and developers. On the other side, probes have been devised as interfaces for interoperability with non CoolBOT software.

Hierarchical scheduling is a promising methodology for designing and deploying real-time applications, since it enables component-based design and analysis, and supports temporal isolation among competing applications. In hierarchical scheduling an application is described by means of a temporal interface. The designer faces the problem of how to derive the interface parameters so to make the application schedulable, at the same time minimizing the waste of computational resources. The problem is particularly relevant in multiprocessor systems, where it is not clear yet how the interface parameters influence the schedulability of the application and allocation on the physical platform. In this paper we present three novel contributions to hierarchical scheduling for multiprocessor systems. First, we propose the Bounded-Delay Multipartition (BDM), a new interface specification model that allows the designer to balance resource usage versus flexibility in selecting the virtual platform parameters. Second, we explore the schedulability region of a real-time application on top of a generic virtual platform, and derive the interface parameter. Finally, we propose Fluid Best-Fit, an algorithm that takes advantage of the extra degree of flexibility provided by the BDM to compute the virtual platform parameters and allocate it on the physical platform. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated by simulations.

A computer network intrusion detection and prevention system consists of collecting network traffic data, discovering user behavior patterns as intrusion detection rules, and applying these rules to prevent malicious and misuse. Many commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) products have been developed to perform each of these tasks. In this paper, the component-based software engineering approach is exploited to integrate these COTS products as components into a computerized system to automatically detect intrusion rules from network traffic data and prevent future potential attacks. The component-based software architecture of this kind of system is designed, COTS components are analyzed, adaptor components to compose COTS products are developed, and the system implementation is illustrated.
