In this thesis we contribute to the Progress IDE, an integrated development enviroment for real-time embedded systems and more precisely to the REMES toolchain, a set of tools to enabling construction and analysis of embedded system behavior models. The contribution aims to facilitate the formal analysis of behavioral models, so that certain extra-functional properties might be verified during early stages of development. Previous work in the field proposes use of the Priced Timed Automata framework for verification of such properties. The thesis outlines the main points where the current toolchain should be extended in order to allow formal analysis of modeled components. Result of the work is a prototype, which minimizes the manual efforts of system designer by model to model transformations and provides seamless integration with existing tools for formal analysis.

Orchestra Framework: Protocol Design for Ad Hoc and Delay Tolerant Networks using Genetic Algorithms

Protocol designs targeted at a specific network scenario or performance metric appear promising on paper, but the complexity and cost of implementing and tuning a routing protocol from scratch presents a major bottleneck in the protocol design process. A unique framework called ’Orchestra` is proposed in the literature to support the testing and development of novel routing designs. The idea of the Orchestra framework is to create generic and reusable routing functional components which can be combined to create unique protocol designs customized for a specific performance metric or network setting. The first contribution of this thesis is the development of a generic, modular, scalable and extensible architecture of the Orchestra framework. Once the architecture and implementation of the framework is completed, the second contribution of this thesis is the development of functional components and strategies to design and implement routing protocols for delay tolerant networks (DTNs). DTNs are a special type of ad hoc network characterized by intermittent connectivity, long propagation delays and high loss rate. Thus, traditional ad hoc routing approaches cannot be used in DTNs, and special features must be developed for the Orchestra framework to support the design of DTN routing protocols. The component-based architecture of Orchestra can capture a variety of modules that can be used to assemble a routing protocol. However, manually assembling these components may result in suboptimal designs, because it is difficult to determine what the best combination is for a particular set of performance objectives and network characteristics. The third contribution of the thesis addresses this problem. A genetic algorithm based approach to automate the process of routing protocol design is developed and its performance is evaluated in the context of the Orchestra framework.

Exception Handlers for Healing component-based Systems

To design effective exception handlers, developers must predict at design time the exceptional events that may occur at runtime, and must implement the corresponding handlers on the basis of their predictions. Designing exception handlers for component-based software systems is particularly difficult because the information required to build handlers is distributed between component and application developers. component developers know the internal details of the components but ignore the applications, while application developers own the applications but cannot access the details required to implement handlers in components. This article addresses the problem of automatically healing the infield failures that are caused by faulty integration of OTS components. In the article, we propose a technique and a methodology to decouple the tasks of component and application developers, who will be able to share information asynchronously and independently, and communicate implicitly by developing and deploying what we call healing connectors. component developers implement healing connectors on the basis of information about the integration problems frequently experienced by application developers. Application developers easily and safely install healing connectors in their applications without knowing the internal details of the connectors. Healing connectors heal failures activated by exceptions raised in the OTS components actually deployed in the system. The article defines healing connectors, introduces a methodology to develop and deploy healing connectors, and presents several case studies that indicate that healing connectors are effective, reusable and efficient.

Requirement prioritization framework using case-based reasoning: A mining-based approach

In the current era of technology and development, component-based software development (CBSD) has been progressively implemented. components are used in large products for multiple users with diverse viewpoints and are highly configurable to provide higher satisfaction. components are reused because of their similar functionality to reduce complexity and ensure the correct interaction between interfaces during product development. However, implementation of component functionalities creates complications due to improper specification, prioritization of components requirements, encapsulated functionalities, and more human interaction. Furthermore, due to configurability and the involvement of multiple stakeholders, ambiguity and semantic issues arise in the behaviour of reusable components. To overcome semantic-based specification and prioritization components' related issues, we propose a framework that uses text mining and case-based reasoning (CBR) techniques. Results of our empirical evaluation demonstrate that the proposed framework significantly outperforms the conventional technique.

Distributed software built from components has become a mainstay of service-oriented applications, which frequently undergo reconfigurations to adapt to changes in their operating environment or their functional requirements. Given the complexity of distributed software and the adverse effects of incorrect reconfigurations, a suitable methodology is needed to ensure the correctness of reconfigurations in component-based systems. This survey gives the reader a global perspective over existing formal techniques that pursue this goal. It distinguishes different ways in which formal methods can improve the reliability of reconfigurations, and lists techniques that contribute to solving each of these particular scientific challenges.

component-based design improves productivity by concentrating development efforts on one component at a time without having to worry about a change having an application-wide effect. In this paper, we demonstrate the usefulness of componentbased approach in the development of an infectious disease simulator. Specifically, we have explored the possibility of self performance tuning at runtime through the use of hot-swappable components by incrementally develop optimised component variants easily. The application has achieved 4 times speedup using dynamic kernel adaptation and a further 5.3 times speedup through parallelisation on a multicore and GPU server.

Systematic Refinement of Performance Models for Concurrent component-based Systems

Model-driven performance prediction methods require detailed design models to evaluate the performance of software systems during early development stages. However, the complexity of detailed prediction models and the semantic gap between modelled performance concerns and functional concerns prevents many developers to address performance. As a solution to this problem, systematic model refinements, called completions, hide low-level details from developers. Completions automatically integrate performance-relevant details into component-based architectures using model-to-model transformations. In such scenarios, conflicts between different completions are likely. Therefore, the application order of completions must be determined unambiguously in order to reduce such conflicts. Many existing approaches employ the concept of performance completions to include performance-relevant details to the prediction model. So far researcher only address the application of a single completion on an architectural model. The reduction of conflicting completions have not yet been considered. In this paper, we present a systematic approach to reduce and avoid conflicts between completions that are applied to the same model. The method presented in this paper is essential for the automated integration of completions in software performance engineering. Furthermore, we apply our approach to reduce conflicts of a set of completions based on design patterns for concurrent software systems.

Model-driven and component-based framework for scientific applications

Interactive scientific visualization applications have been more and more used to observe, analyze and understand the complex phenomena studied in several scientific disciplines such as (nano-sciences, fluid simulations, etc.). To facilitate the coupling of the different computation, visualization and exploration codes, which are often heterogeneous and difficult to cooperate, scientists must be able to use and reuse the different parts of the applications already built in order to interchange and enrich certain parts without being experts. In this context, a middleware called FlowVR has been developed by the scientific community leading to make applications divided into set of components exchanging messages. Moreover, this middleware enables to encapsulate existing codes in components, interconnect them via data links, and deploy them on distributed computing resources. Nevertheless, FlowVR does not offer any capability to check the functional correctness of new developed component-based applications. This paper presents a framework called Model and component-based framework for Scientific Applications (MCSA) based on a interplay of model-driven and component-based software engineering. On the one hand, we provide a domain specific language dedicated to physics/chemistry scientists in order to built their MCSA applications. This language also allows to capitalize efforts by proposing existing components that have been already developed. On the other hand, we propose a model transformation to check the correctness of instantiated models, for this, we use a new subclass of Petri net called strict Colored FIFO Nets (sCFN). Our approach has been backed by a case study relies on a molecular dynamics application.

This report is a deliverable of a self-funded strategic pre-study carried out by VTT Electronics in 2000 on software products developed for and used by the electronics, automation and telecommunication industries. The focus of the study was on software component products, especially on such software components that can be tailored by component suppliers or buyers before their actual use. In the report, this type of business is called original software component manufacturing, referring to the analogy of original equipment manufacturing that is well-known in other industries. Another phrase that could be used is partnership software component production. However, there is a continuum from tailored software components that are developed by the product manufacturer itself, who is committed to component-based software engineering, to fully commercially supplied off-the-shelf components. Therefore, this report includes certain aspects along the entire continuum. An important issue related to this is to analyze how and why a supplier of tailored components would develop towards off-the-shelf products. A related question on the buyer's side is the change of an independent product manufacturer to a system integrator that puts together products with the help of fully commercial component suppliers. One of the main goals of the report, which was produced mostly based on information available on the Internet, is to try to structure the present state of software components, businesses and production processes. The information that was gathered includes therefore both business-related and technical subjects, as well as the views of component developers, buyers, sellers, and so called brokers. The latter is emerging as an intermediary role in software component distribution. The role of a broker can also be played by a first-tier supplier, i.e. a company that manages a portion of the supplying network for the system integrator. Designing and Reporting on Computational Experiments of Multi-objective component Selection Algorithm

One important issue of component-based software development is the minimization of the development cost and the maximization of the system reliability while satisfying functional requirements. There are numerous publications on this issue based on metaheuristic techniques, but there are two deficiencies: too tough to evaluate the performance of algorithms and fix parameters in the real-world application. To address this problem, a three phased algorithm is proposed by the Wu et al. [International Journal of Information Technology & Decision Making 5 (2011) 811-841]. This paper describes computational experience in solving the problems using the metaheuristics and the proposed algorithm. The results indicate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms in terms of overall nondominated vector generation, well converged set of solutions, and diversity of solutions. Computational results and simulation analysis further assist a decision maker to fix optimal parameters of metaheuristics including the number of iteration, crossover rate, and mutation rate, and explore hints in using metaheuristics for the problem.
