This article defines key requirements for an architecture-based approach to trustworthy components. We then provide a brief overview of our architecture definition language RADL with a focus on compositionality and extra-functional properties. RADL aims at very high-level specification and validation of hierarchical assemblies of distributed real-time components. Several ideas in RADL are oriented towards modern middleware technologies such as NET and EJB and to software-engineering methods such as UML. RADL dynamic models are centered around contracts, state machines and Petri nets. These are associated to contact points and connectors for defining connection constraints in architectural specification. They define configuration and behavioral contracts when they are associated to components and architectural assemblies of components. RADL contracts permit static compatibility checks and automatic gate adaptation for true black-box reuse. Dynamic monitoring of deployed components complements this with execution-based mechanism enabling prediction of extra-functional properties during architectural design. Training Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) is a computationally intensive and time-consuming task. For this reason, distributing the training process of CNNs has become a crucial approach to decrease the training duration and effectively train CNN models in a reasonable time. Nevertheless, introducing parallelism to CNNs is a challenging task in practice. It is a tedious, repetitive and error-prone process. In this paper, we present Auto-CNNp, a novel framework to automate CNNs training parallelization task. To achieve this goal, the Auto-CNNp introduces a key component which is called CNN-Parallelism-Generator. The latter component encapsulates and hides typical CNNs parallelization routine tasks while being extensible for user-specific customization. Our proposed reference implementation provides a high level of abstraction over MPI-based CNNs parallelization process, despite the CNN-based imaging task and its related architecture and training dataset. The quantitative and qualitative assessment of our proposal on two medical imagining segmentation case studies show its (1) significant impact in facilitating the distributing of the CNNs training task and (2) its generalization for a wider scope of use cases.

In this paper a new approach for handling the problem of comparing different complex algorithms is proposed. The main idea behind this research is to set up a framework that can be applied to the most well-known and widely used complex algorithms. A component-based framework, IEOCA (Intelligent Evaluation of Complex Algorithms) written in Java for building and studying complex algorithms like genetic algorithms and ant colony optimization is developed. The evaluation framework provides a standard testing methodology for comparing the accuracy and performance of selected algorithms.

SaveCCM is a domain-specific component model developed specifically for safety-critical hard real-time embedded systems in the vehicular domain. This paper expands the scope of SaveCCM to make it usable also outside this narrow domain, as the general concepts behind SaveCCM are applicable for a wider range of embedded systems. We describe the extensions made to SaveCCM in order to adjust it to a broader scope, focusing on a new realization mechanism. In its original form, SaveCCM systems are realized by components being grouped and transformed into real-time tasks. We propose an alternative realization of SaveCCM by transformation to Java Beans, which makes the executable system more general and portable, and maintains the structure of the component-based design.

Architectural mismatch [1];the semantic and syntactic gap preventing component composition, can be partially alleviated through the ubiquity of the protocols for service composition (syntax). And yet, the semantics of service or component composition have remained elusive. The contribution of this paper builds on the notions introduced by grammar-oriented object design (GOOD) using the notion of manners to specify the semantics of services and drive their automated composition through dynamically re-configure architectures enabled through GOOD. This leads to the use of manners for explicit service semantics representation in a re-configurable architectural style. We describe the base requirements for automated component and services composition and show how automated assembly of components and services can be accomplished through a dynamically re-configurable (DyRec) architectural style. In addition, we show how this vision of dynamic reconfiguration is naturally supported by the Web services framework, because it derives from some of the core requirements of the Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) style embodied by Web services. Further, we discuss how such a DyRec architectural style can be implemented using grammar-oriented object design (GOOD) and describe a project that led to a tool called the Business, Compiler, to accomplish dynamic composition and collaboration.

A fundamental requirement for achieving continuity of care is the seamless sharing of multimedia clinical information. Different technological approaches can be adopted for enabling the communication and sharing of health record segments. In the context of the emerging global information society, the creation of and access to the integrated electronic health record (I-EHR) of a citizen has been assigned high priority in many countries. This requirement is complementary to an overall requirement for the creation of a health information infrastructure (HII) to support the provision of a variety of health telematics and e-health services. In developing a regional or national HII, the components or building blocks that make up the overall information system ought to be defined and an appropriate component architecture specified. This paper discusses current international priorities and trends in developing the HII. It presents technological challenges and alternative approaches towards the creation of an I-EHR, being the aggregation of health data created during all interactions of an individual with the healthcare system. It also presents results from an ongoing Research and Development (R&D) effort towards the implementation of the HII in HYGEIAnet, the regional health information network of Crete, Greece, using a component-based software engineering approach. Critical design decisions and related trade-offs, involved in the process of component specification and development, are also discussed and the current state of development of an I-EHR service is presented. Finally, Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and security issues, which are important for the deployment and use of any I-EHR service, are considered. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. The state of the art in distributed simulation is described and the current challenge and requirement for distributed simulation are discussed. A simulation framework based on service-oriented architecture is proposed for its virtues in achieving simulation composability. Three component-based software engineering technologies for constructing service-oriented simulation platform are compared. As a case, multi-tier model architecture for navy warfare simulation is proposed and the simulation platform is established according to Java EE/EJB specification. The implementation and experiment of this simulation platform are expatiated in details.

Companies developing software are constantly striving to gain or keep their competitive advantage on the market. To do so, they should balance what to develop themselves and what to get from elsewhere, which may be software components or software services. These strategic decisions need to be aligned with business objectives and the capabilities and constraints of possible options. These sourcing options include: in-house, COTS, open source and outsourcing. The objective of this paper is to present an approach to support decision-makers in selecting appropriate types of origins in a specific case that maximizes the benefits of the selected business strategy. The approach consists of three descriptive models, as well as a decision process and a knowledge repository. The three models are a decision model that comprises three cornerstones (stakeholders, origins and criteria) and is based on a taxonomy for formulating decision models in this context, and two supporting models (property models and context models).

SOA applications are developed to implement service-oriented workflows with service specifications. Most SOA applications are made of service-oriented components, which are built using standard specifications and interaction protocols. How to validate system performance and measure the non-function requirements and behaviors in a component-based SOA application becomes a challenge for engineer. This paper focuses on the measurement of the component-based SOA systems in terms of service-oriented process speed, system reliability, throughput, and availability. The paper proposes a systematic solution to support the system level measurement for component-based SOA software, which extends our previous component level performance measurement. The paper presents a systematic solution using an event-based functional transition model as a performance evaluation model, and its evaluation metrics, such as system processing time, throughput, availability and reliability. It reports the basic functions and design of this solution, also presents a case study and application results.
