An executable file compression solution for mobile terminals of MIS was proposed, optimal compression algorithm was selected and ported to BREW platform. Meanwhile, concrete implementation of this proposal was given. Experiment results on mobile terminals using Arm7 chip show that, under the premise of guaranteeing the running speed of the application, this solution with strong practicability can reduce the executable file size to 35 similar to 55 percents of its origin, which has a significant savings in storage capacity of mobile phones on CDMA platform, and has greatly reduced the network transmission time of the executable file.

Research on technology of desktop virtualization based on SPICE protocol and its improvement solutions

Increasingly mature cloud computing technology promotes virtual desktop technology, which can solve many problems existing in traditional computing models. However, virtual desktop solutions introduce the thorny problem of how to deliver a real desktop experience to users, as if they are using it locally, especially when playing video. The SPICE （simple protocol for independent computing environments） virtual desktop solution provides several image compression algorithms to address this problem with the purpose of making virtual desktops as real as possible. Although different compression algorithms can contribute their own abilities to different images to a large extent, switching between them is a big problem that consumes a large amount of resources to detect the different type of image and also causes jitter of the virtual desktop. This paper proposes a new solution, called SPICEx, using the JPEG2000 compression algorithm with dynamic compression ratios to solve the problem and finally validates that the performance is better than that of SPICE. With better quality of user experience and also reducing bandwidth consumption, SPICEx solution is meaningful in virtual desktop fields and can be widely used.

Cluster parallel rendering based on encoded mesh

Use of compressed mesh in parallel rendering architecture is still an unexplored area, the main challenge of which is to partition and sort the encoded mesh in compression-domain. This paper presents a mesh compression scheme PRMC (Parallel Rendering based Mesh compression) supplying encoded meshes that can be partitioned and sorted in parallel rendering system even in encoded-domain. First, we segment the mesh into submeshes and clip the submeshes’ boundary into Runs, and then piecewise compress the submeshes and Runs respectively. With the help of several auxiliary index tables, compressed submeshes and Runs can serve as rendering primitives in parallel rendering system. Based on PRMC, we design and implement a parallel rendering architecture. Compared with uncompressed representation, experimental results showed that PRMC meshes applied in cluster parallel rendering system can dramatically reduce the communication requirement.

The KOTO experiment at J-PARC, Japan, aims to observe the rare neutral kaon decay mode K-L -> pi(0)nu(nu) over bar. After the first experimental run in May 2013 at a 24-kW beam power, the KOTO data acquisition (DAQ) system was upgraded in 2015 to provide efficient and reliable data collection at higher beam intensities. Lossless data compression in the analog-to-digital converter modules was implemented to reduce the size of data packets, resulting in a threefold increase in data collection rate. A new software trigger on a 47-node cluster was designed to use Infiniband hardware with message passing interface protocol to establish a mesh network inside the computer clusters for parallel data processing. The upgrade to the KOTO DAQ system was commissioned in 2015 and successfully collected data with a beam intensity of up to 42 kW. In preparation for increasing beam intensities in future runs, the hardware trigger upgrades using the reconfigurable clustering element platform technology are under development.

A subdomain multilevel approach for the efficient MoM analysis of large planar antennas

A novel method, accelerating the method-of-moment (MoM) analysis of large, complex-shaped microstrip antennas, is presented The basic step in the approach is to divide the complex geometry into simpler subdomains, which immediately means to split the entire large computation into several smaller subproblems. The crux is then to combine the partial solutions to a compressed global moment system, taking into account the symmetries and mutual coupling. The numerical results of the proposed method are compared both to brute-force computations and measurement data. They show excellent agreement, giving, for instance, for the input impedance of a four-patch antenna, an error of less than 0.3%, while the matrix is reduced by a factor of 2.7, requiring only 14% of the initial memory size. In constructing the Bayesian network (BN) reliability model, too many components will make the memory storage requirements of the conditional probability table (CPT) exceed the computer random access memory (RAM), especially for the complex multistate system with common cause failure (CCF). However, the existing methods cannot solve the BN modeling's large memory storage requirements problem of the complex multistate system with CCF. Thus, this paper proposes a BN block to process the nodes with CCF, converting CPT to a super multistate node's joint probability table, based on which a multistate BN compression modeling algorithm under CCF is proposed to reduce the memory storage requirements of BN reliability modeling. By deriving the intermediate inference factor constructing rules, this paper proposes a multistate BN compression inference algorithm under CCF to perform the compressed BN reliability inference. Finally, two engineering cases validate the proposed algorithms' performance. The results show that the proposed algorithms can significantly decrease the BN modeling's memory storage requirements and accurately analyze the reliability of the complex multistate system with CCF.

Two effective approaches to reduce data storage in reverse time migration

Prestack reverse time migration (RTM) requires extensive data storage since it computes wavefields in forward time and accesses wavefields in reverse order. We first review several successful schemes that have been proposed to reduce data storage, but require more computational redundancies. We propose two effective strategies to reduce data storage during RIM. The first strategy is based on the Nyquist sampling theorem, which involves no extra computational cost. The fact is that the time sampling intervals required by numerical algorithms or given by field records is generally several times smaller than that satisfied by the Nyquist sampling theorem. Therefore, we can correlate the source wavefields with the receiver wavefields at the Nyquist time step, which helps decrease storage of time history. The second strategy is based on a lossless compression algorithm, which is widely used in computer science and information theory. The compression approach reduces storage significantly at a little computational cost. Numerical examples show that the two proposed strategies are effective and efficient. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) play a key role in deep learning applications. However, the large storage overheads and the substantial computational cost of CNNs are problematic in hardware accelerators. Computing-in-memory (CIM) architecture has demonstrated great potential to effectively compute large-scale matrix-vector multiplication. However, the intensive multiply and accumulation (MAC) operations executed on CIM macros remain bottlenecks for further improvement of energy efficiency and throughput. To reduce computational costs, model compression is a widely studied method to shrink the model size. For implementation in a static random access memory (SRAM) CIM-based accelerator, the model compression algorithm must consider the hardware limitations of CIM macros. In this study, a software and hardware co-design approach is proposed to design MARS, a SRAM-based CIM (SRAM CIM)-based CNN accelerator that can utilize multiple SRAM CIM macros as processing units and support a sparse CNN, and an SRAM CIM-aware model compression algorithm that considers a CIM architecture to reduce the number of network parameters. With the proposed hardware software co-designed method, MARS can reach over 700 and 400 FPS for CIFAR-10 and CIFAR-100, respectively. In addition, MARS achieves 52.3 and 88.2 TOPs/W in VGG16 and ResNet18, respectively.

Distributed source coding using symbol-based and non-binary turbo codes - applications to wireless sensor networks

A simple but powerful scheme for distributed source coding (DSC) based on the concept of binning and syndromes and non traditional turbo codes is proposed. The previous works on the compression with side information using turbo codes and the binning technique are focused on binary turbo codes. The source is considered to be binary or is converted to a binary stream. This conversion, however, reduces the redundancy that could be exploited by the compression algorithm. To achieve higher compression efficiency, the authors propose using a scheme based on a turbo decoder that decides over symbols rather than bits. In the same direction and for further performance improvement, at the cost of increased encoder complexity, they also present a DSC scheme based on non-binary turbo codes. The results demonstrate improved performance. Based on the suggested algorithms, a scheme for gathering real data in wireless sensor networks and assess the corresponding energy savings is proposed.
