An FPGA-based approach is proposed for implementing a compression system developed specifically for the signal of phonocardiogram. The compression method offers better rate and distorsion than standard audio compression techniques. Both the algorithm and the details on the solutions adopted for its implementation are presented in this paper.

We consider grammar based text compression with longest-first substitution, where non-overlapping occurrences of a longest repeating substring of the input text are replaced by a new non-terminal symbol. We present a new text compression algorithm by simplifying the algorithm presented in S. Inenaga et al., (2003). We give a new formulation of the correctness proof introducing the sparse lazy suffix tree data structure. We also present another type of longest-first substitution strategy that allows better compression. We show results of preliminary experiments comparing grammar sizes of the two versions of the longest-first strategy and the most frequent strategy

Existing header compression systems, like ROHC, try to compress all headers in protocol stack together, using monolithic profiles. The distributed profiles concept is introduced recently, used to compress protocol headers individually. In this paper, the research for optimal format indication for distributed profiles is presented. After concluding that per protocol CRC and padding are obsolete, the compression efficiency is calculated for TCP, RTP and SCTP stacks, and further tested on real captured flows. The results obtained show, that distributed concept can be nearly as efficient as the monolithic one.

compression algorithms generate a predictive model of data, using the model to reduce the number of bits required to transmit the data (in effect, transmitting only the differences from the model). As a consequence, the degree of compression achieved provides an estimate of the level of regularity in the data. Previous work has investigated the use of these estimates to understand the replication of building blocks within genetic programming (GP) individuals, and hence to understand how different GP algorithms promote the evolution of repeated common structure within individuals. Here, we extend this work to the population level, and use it to understand the extent of similarity between sub-structures within individuals in GP populations.

Recent processors utilize a variety of parallel processing technologies to boost its performance, and thus it is required that multimedia applications can be efficiently parallelized and can be easily implemented on such a processor with parallel processing features. We implemented a parallel algorithm with "double strip-mining" method of optimal codeword search for VQ compression on a shared-memory parallel environment and evaluated the effectiveness of the parallel algorithm. Namely, by applying strip-mining method to a loop with regard to vectors as well as that to codewords (double strip-mining), the buffer area can be reduced and results of our experiments find that this method can keep the same performance as the original strip-mining method with regard to the quality of compression. Moreover, two optimization methods for sequential computers are described: the shortcut calculation and the modified expression. Our experimental results show that the elapsed time is improved by 20% to 40% by using the both sequential optimization methods, so the effectiveness of the above methods on sequential computers is empirically confirmed and can be also applied to parallel systems easily.

This paper presents a hybrid image coding scheme, based on shape primitives, termed Shape Primitive Extraction and Coding (SPEC). It is required that the compression algorithm should not only achieve high compression ratio, but also low complexity and high visual quality. The segmentation classifies image blocks into picture and text/graphics blocks by thresholding the number of colors of each block, and then extracts shape primitives of text/graphics from picture blocks. Dynamic color palette that tracks recent text/graphics colors is used to separate small shape primitives of text/graphics from pictorial blocks. Shape primitives are also extracted from text/graphics blocks. Then, the foreground text and graphics pixels is compressed with a lossless coding algorithm, which integrates shape-based and palette-based coding and the background pictorial pixels is compressed with lossy Joint Photographic Expert Group (JPEG). Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and low complexity of the hybrid scheme.

We propose a new connectivity-guided adaptive wavelet transform based mesh compression framework. The 3D mesh is first transformed to 2D images on a regular grid structure by performing orthogonal projections onto the image plane. Then, this image-like representation is wavelet transformed using a lifting structure employing an adaptive predictor that takes advantage of the connectivity information of mesh vertices. Then the wavelet domain data is encoded using "Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees" (SPIHT) method or JPEG2000. The SPIHT approach is progressive because the resolution of the reconstructed mesh can be changed by varying the length of the ID data stream created by the algorithm. In JPEG2000 based approach, quantization of the coefficients determines the quality of the reconstruction. The results of the SPIHT based algorithm is observed to be superior to JPEG200 based mesh coder and MPEG-3DGC in rate-distortion.

This paper presents a new triangle meshes compression algorithm, which encodes connectivity information between vertex chains in the meshes that are already stripified. The algorithm builds up basic strips based on the vertex chains of the original strips at first. The information of redundant edges is implicit hence the only information need to encode is about absent edges. The proposed algorithm provides a new representation that is guaranteed to encode connectivity information of any meshes in less than 2 bits/T, and in 1.2 bits/T on average in the experiment results using FTSG. In the experiments, the method was proved to have good performance.

Sufficient network bandwidth and smooth communication tunnels determine the success of Internet applications. However, the growth of bandwidth requirements is much faster than the growth of physical network bandwidth. To manage limited network bandwidth, the QoS service is an effective approach. Nevertheless, the performance of previous QoS services is limited by the physical network bandwidth. In this study, we propose a QoS gateway with real-time packet compression. The proposed QoS gateway provides the packet transmission rate higher than the physical network bandwidth. To evaluate the proposed QoS gateway, we have implemented a prototype on Intel IXP425 platform. We adopted the LZSS compression algorithm and provided several LZSS implementations for performing differential services. The experimental result shows that the transmission rate increases 15%.

A detailed analysis of different code compression algorithms is provided in this paper. The performances of the algorithms have been tested on ARM codes whose size is below 32 KB. Code compression performances have been considered including the compression overheads due to the decoding tables, to the alignment and to the tables for random access to the compressed code. We have analyzed Huffman, Tunstall, LZ77 and Class-based techniques. Optimal performances are provided by Class Based algorithms with an average compression ratio of 64%. For this algorithm we have realized a static decompression engine that provides, after an initial latency of three clock cycles, one 32b instruction for clock cycle.
