Based on factorization of the transform matrix in triangular elementary reversible matrices (TERM), an integer approximation algorithm of the principal component transform (IPCT) is proposed. We improve the pivoting method of TERM factorization in order to obtain limited error and enhanced computational efficiency, and we develop a new lossless compression algorithm for hyperspectal imagery combining the perfectly reversible integer PCT with the 3-D Tarp coder. After applying an integer wavelet transform in spatial domain we use the improved IPCT for inter-band derecolation. In coding stage the novel 3-D Tarp coder allows probability estimation with five simple recursive filters. And this probability estimate can be used to drive a non-adaptive arithmetic coder to entropy code significance-map and refinement information of transformed coefficients. The main advantage of our compression algorithm is low complexity and it can yield embedded bitstreams with higher compression ratio compared to existing algorithms.

In this paper, we propose an efficient compression algorithm for hyperspectral images. It is based on the correlation coefficients adaptive AT-3DSPIHT coding in the domain of WPT (wavelet packet transform). According to the characteristics of correlation coefficients between spectral bands, a binary tree spectral band grouping algorithm is carried out to divide the adjacent spectral bands into different mode groups. Along with this, WPT with the corresponding decomposition levels and a proper AT-3D zerotree are determined adaptively. Several AVIRIS images are used to evaluate the proposed algorithm. Compared with the existing 3D-based algorithms, the proposed adaptive AT-3DSPIHT achieves the best compression performance at lower rates. Moreover, at the low correlated adjacent bands, our proposed algorithm also beats the 2DSPIHT and JPEG2000-MC algorithm respectively.

We propose an adaptive wavelet transform that results in fewer large detail coefficients while preserving image contours in the approximation subband. The transform is constructed with a three-step nonlinear lifting scheme: a fixed prediction followed by a space-varying update and a non-additive prediction. The interest of the proposed scheme is demonstrated for nearly lossless compression.

This paper introduces a family of integer-to-integer approximations to the Cartesian-to-polar coordinate transformation and analyzes its application to lossy compression. A high-rate analysis is provided for an encoder that first uniformly scalar quantizes, then transforms to "integer polar coordinates," and finally separately entropy codes angle and radius. For sources separable in polar coordinates, the performance (at high rate) is shown to match that of entropy-constrained unconstrained polar quantization - where the angular quantization is allowed to depend on the radius. Thus, for sources separable in polar coordinates but not separable in rectangular coordinates - including certain Gaussian scale mixtures - the proposed system performs better than any transform code. Furthermore, unlike unconstrained polar quantization, integer polar coordinates are appropriate for lossless compression of integer-valued vectors. Combination of integer polar coordinates with integer-to-integer transform coding is also discussed.

This paper describes FPC, a lossless compression algorithm for linear streams of 64-bit floating-point data. FPC is designed to compress well while at the same time meeting the high throughput demands of scientific computing environments. On our thirteen datasets, it achieves a substantially higher average compression ratio than BZIP2, DFCM, FSD, GZIP, and PLML At comparable compression ratios, it compresses and decompresses 8 to 300 times faster than the other five algorithms

Correct assessment of image fidelity is fundamental to the development of efficient image compression schemes especially to that of the schemes taking characteristics of the human visual system into account. In this paper, a fidelity metric for assessing the visual quality of color images is presented. The proposed fidelity metric is designed to measure the perceivable distortion in the quasi-uniform color space of CIELAB. To evaluate the perceptibility of distortion, a color visual model is employed to estimate the visibility threshold of distortion for each color pixel. The visibility threshold of each color is measured as the size of the sphere of just-noticeable color difference and is modeled as a function of chroma, local luminance gradient and background uniformity. Simulation results show that the assessment of the proposed fidelity metric is more correspondent with the subjective assessment than other metrics using PSNR and CIELAB DeltaE.

A high-level partitioning methodology has been reported which explores the space of equivalent discrete Fourier transform formulations, achieving significant improvements over previously published results. In this article, we discuss the extension of this formulation-exploration strategy to partition the discrete cosine transform (DCT) onto distributed hardware architectures, e.g. multi-FPGA platforms. We study several regular DCT formulations and consider their potential for distributed implementation. By analyzing the DCT computational structure, a new Cooley-Tukey-like formulation was derived which allows the DCT factorization into arbitrary sized blocks while preserving structural regularity. Experiments were conducted to measure the partition quality of the previous and new DCT formulations, evidencing the need for formulation-exploration as part of the partition optimization process.

This paper presents the design of a JPEG encoder which exploits this feature. We propose a mixed HW/SW architecture, where most compute-intensive components of the application are mapped to application-specific HW cores. These cores can be alternated on the FPGA, by means of internal dynamic reconfiguration. Our purpose is to describe a real-world application of reconfigurable computing, illustrating how this approach allows to save area with negligible performance overhead.

We propose a feature-based multi-target tracking algorithm which can track multiple targets in real time with a simple but efficient velocity segmentation method. The optical flow velocity distribution profile of the feature points detected on a moving target or on the background when the camera has ego-motion is assumed to have a Gaussian-like function. We can separate the background feature points and those of moving targets by examining the velocity distribution function profile at each frame without a prior knowledge on the number and texture of the moving objects. The optical flow velocity of a feature point in each image frame is computed by the iterative Lucas-Kanade algorithm. These feature points are divided into groups with the similar velocity. Feature points are further divided into sub-groups according to their proximity the image frame. The feature point group with the largest span is identified as the background feature and its velocity is the camera velocity when the background is fixed. Multiple targets are identified based on their velocities and proximity in one frame. With a pyramidal sampling scheme to reduce the frame size to one-sixteenth of its original size, and the iterative Lucas-Kanade algorithm to find the optical flow in a multi-resolution manner, we are able to track multiple objects in real time with a moving hand-held camera.

In this paper we describe the recent development of a low-bandwidth wireless camera sensor network. We propose a simple, yet effective, network architecture which allows multiple cameras to be connected to the network and synchronize their communication schedules. Image compression of greater than 90% is performed at each node running on a local DSP coprocessor, resulting in nodes using 1/8th the energy compared to streaming uncompressed images. We briefly introduce the Fleck wireless node and the DSP/camera sensor, and then outline the network architecture and compression algorithm. The system is able to stream color QVGA images over the network to a base station at up to 2 frames per second.
