Virtual private networks (VPNs) allow two or more parties to communicate securely over a public network. Using cryptographic algorithms and protocols, VPNs provide security services such as confidentiality, host authentication and data integrity. The computation required to provide adequate security, however, can significantly degrade the performance. We characterize the extent to which data compression can alleviate this performance problem in a VPN implemented with the IP Security Protocol (IPsec). We use a system model for IPsec transactions to derive an inequality that specifies the conditions required for data compression to improve performance. We generate performance results for many combinations of network types, data types, packet sizes, and encryption, authentication and compression algorithms. We find that compression usually improves the performance when using 10 Mbps or slower networks, but compression only improves the performance in systems with 100 Mbps or 1 Gbps networks when using computationally intensive encryption algorithms.

This paper proposes a new image based rendering technique called concentric mosaic for virtual reality applications. It is constructed by capturing vertical slit images when a camera is moving around a set of concentric circles. Concentric mosaic allows the user to move freely in a circular region and observe significant parallax and lighting changes without recovering the geometric and photometric scene model. The rendering of concentric mosaic is very efficient, which amounts to reordering and interpolating of previously captured slit images in the concentric mosaic. Concentric mosaic typically consists of hundreds of high-resolution images, which consumes significant amount of storage and bandwidth for transmission. An MPEG-like compression algorithm is therefore proposed taking advantages of the access patterns and redundancies of the mosaic images. Experimental results show that real-time reconstruction of novel views with good image quality can be achieved in a Pentium II 300 MHz PC.

This paper proposes a silence compression algorithm operating at multi-rates (MR) and with dual-bandwidths (DB), a narrowband and a wideband, for the MPEG-4 CELP standard. The MR/DB operations are implemented by a variable-frame-size/dual-bandwidth voice activity detection (VF/DB-VAD) module with domain conversions of the input signal, and a variable frame-size comfort noise generator (VF-CNG). The CNG module adaptively controls the power smoothing of the decoded signal to improve the coding quality. The algorithm also employs a dual-rate discontinuous transmission (DR-DTX) module to reduce an average transmission bit rate during silence periods. The subjective test results show that the proposed silence compression algorithm gives no degradation in coding quality for clean and noisy speech signals. These signals include about 20 to 30% nonspeech frames and the average transmission bit rates are reduced by 20 to 40%. The proposed algorithm has been standardized as a part of the ISO/IEC MPEG-4 CELP version 2.

We propose a lossless algorithm of delta compression (a variant of predictive coding) that attempts to predict the next point from previous points using higher-order polynomial extrapolation. In contrast to traditional predictive coding our method takes into account varying (non-equidistant) domain (typically, time) steps. To save space and guarantee lossless compression, the actual and predicted values are converted to 64-bit integers. The residual (difference between actual and predicted values) is computed as difference of integers. The unnecessary bits of the residual are truncated, e.g., 1111110101 is replaced by 10101. The length of the bit sequence (5/sub 10/=(000101)/sub 2/) is prepended.

The compression of geometric structures is a relatively new field of data compression. Since about 1995, several articles have dealt with the coding of meshes, using for most of them the following approach: the vertices of the mesh are coded in an order that partially contains the topology of the mesh. In the same time, some simple rules attempt to predict the position of each vertex from the positions of its neighbors that have been previously coded. We describe a compression algorithm whose principle is completely different: the coding order of the vertices is used to compress their coordinates, and then the topology of the mesh is reconstructed from the vertices. This algorithm achieves compression ratios that are slightly better than those of the currently available algorithms, and moreover, it allows progressive and interactive transmission of the meshes.

Summary form only given. We present optimizations that improve the compression and computational efficiency of Lempel-Ziv (LZ77) and Huffman algorithms. The compression performance of the LZ77 algorithm can be improved by using an optimized longest match parsing strategy. Another factor that can be considered is the size of the reference to the matching string, which can vary due to the secondary Huffman compression. We present an efficient parsing algorithm that considers both factors while minimizing the computational requirements. Our second optimization technique optimizes static Huffman encoding by efficiently dividing the input into blocks of varying size with uneven character frequency distributions.

Most of the traditional ECG data compression methods are designed for single channel data, and, thus, the correlation among channels is not exploited. Therefore, we propose a new adaptive vector quantization (AVQ) scheme to exploit this correlation for multi-channel ECG data compression. The proposed approach consists of two stages. In the first stage, a traditional AVQ mechanism is applied to each channel independently with its own codebook. Each wining codevector index from each codebook is combined to form a new vector. In the second stage, a similar AVQ mechanism is performed except that this index vector instead of a signal vector is processed and the wining codevector must exactly match with this index vector, i.e., with zero distortion. Therefore, the second stage provides further coding gain without introducing any more signal degradation. With two channels of the MIT/BIH data and three channels of in-house Holter data, our experiment results show that the second stage AVQ allows the increase of compression ratio by 1.26/spl plusmn/0.1 times. In general, the more signal channels involved the more coding gain we can obtain with the proposed approach.

We present a novel and fast algorithm to compress an image using nonlinear wavelets under a nonexpansive image pyramid framework. An image pyramid is constructed by downsampling the image and by computing the difference pyramid by upsampling a lower resolution image to predict the next higher resolution image. The novelty of the method lies in using a nonlinear adaptive method to upsample the image, and in processing of the prediction difference in order to reduce its entropy. Performance of the lossless compression is comparable or only slightly worse than the best lossless compression algorithms such as CALIC and LOCO-I, and it also has the additional feature of multiresolution format. The algorithm also works well in lossy mode and it has superior performance on mixed text/graphics images than SPIHT and JPEG.

compression of databases not only reduces space requirements but can also reduce overall retrieval times. We have described elsewhere our RAY algorithm for compressing databases containing general-purpose data, such as images, sound, and also text. We describe here an extension to the RAY compression algorithm that permits use on very large databases. In this approach, we build a model based on a small training set and use the model to compress large databases. Our preliminary implementation is slow for compression, but only slightly slower in decompression speed than the popular GZIP scheme. Importantly, we show that the compression effectiveness of our approach is excellent and markedly better than the GZIP and COMPRESS algorithms on our test sets.
