As wavelet-based image coding is set to became more widely used (e.g. with the completion of the JPEG2000 standard), memory efficiency for wavelet-based coding is becoming an increasingly important issue. In this paper we present a complete system to perform low memory wavelet image coding. Our approach is "line-based" in that the images are read line by line and only the minimum required number of lines is kept in memory. The line-based transform is combined with a low memory entropy coder that does not require any global image information. Our system achieves a large (two orders of magnitude) reduction in memory requirements compared to other available coders, with limited performance loss (e.g., less than 0.5 dB).

This paper presents a new methodology which performs both lossless compression and encryption of binary and gray scale images. The compression and encryption schemes are based on SCAN patterns generated by the SCAN methodology. The SCAN is a formal language based two dimensional spatial accessing methodology which can efficiently specify and generate a wide range of scanning paths or space filling curves. This paper presents compression specific SCAN language, compression and decompression algorithms, encryption and decryption algorithms, and test results of the methodology.

In this paper, we propose a multilayer document compression algorithm. This algorithm first segments a scanned document image into different classes such as text, images and background, then compresses each class using an algorithm specifically designed for that class. Two algorithms are investigated for segmenting documents: a general purpose image segmentation algorithm called the trainable sequential MAP (TSMAP) algorithm, and a rate-distortion optimized segmentation (RDOS) algorithm. Experimental results show that the multilayer compression algorithm can achieve a much lower bit rate than most conventional algorithms such as JPEG at similar subjective distortion levels. We also find that the RDOS method produces more robust segmentations than TSMBP by eliminating misclassifications which can sometimes cause severe artifacts.

In this report, as a method of image compression, we have developed a new method of self-organized image compression. In the method, many nodes are yielded and self-organized according to a gray scale level of image data. Additionally, we have used a genetic algorithm to remove some useless nodes among created clusters so that a high performance optimum structure is realized by as small a number nodes as possible. In addition, we use orthogonal wavelet analysis in the proposed method. In the wavelet domain, we execute self-organization clustering and also check out the performance of the method.

Modern GIS (geographic information system) application programs and simulation systems have to handle large datasets for rendering. Currently, three dimensional rendering hardware are facing a memory bus bandwidth bottleneck problem at the graphics pipeline. One general solution for this problem is to compress the static three dimensional geometry in a preprocessing phase. We present a new mesh compression/decompression algorithm for this application. Our compression algorithm breaks down a triangle mesh into a set of triangle strips and vertex chains. After decomposition, we encode vertex connectivity with entropy encoding. Our algorithm provides a 32% improvement in the compression ratio over existing "Generalized Triangle Mesh (GTM)" compression and supports parallel decompression. We also proposed a parallelogram prediction method for vertex coordinate compression.

New fault tolerance techniques are presented for protecting a lossless compression algorithm, arithmetic coding, whose recursive nature makes it vulnerable to temporary hardware failures. The fundamental arithmetic operations are protected by low-cost residue codes, employing fault tolerance in multiplications and additions. Additional fault-tolerant design techniques are developed to protect other critical steps such as normalization and rounding, bit stuffing and index selection. For example, the decoding step that selects the next symbol is checked by comparing local values with estimates already calculated in other parts of the decoding structure. Bit stuffing, a procedure for limiting very long carry propagations, is checked through modified residue values, whereas normalization and rounding after multiplication are protected by efficiently modifying the multiplier to produce residue segments.

Images acquired on board spacecraft represent in most cases very large volumes of data. It is then necessary to store these data and to transmit them to ground. It is essential to reduce to a minimum the on-board storage capacity and the on-board transmission rate. On board image compression is advantageous for two main reasons: 1) the steady performance improvements of compression algorithms, and 2) the availability in recent years, for spaceborne applications, of highly integrated custom circuits (ASIC technology) which makes it possible to implement, in high pixel rate systems, sophisticated real-time compression schemes. The authors focus on lossy compression algorithms used for CNES space missions. Such a typical image coder has three basic components: a transformation, a quantizer and data coding. In lossy compression the reconstructed image contains degradations relative to the original. As a result, much higher compression can be achieved as compared to lossless compression. More compression is obtained at the expense of more distortion. In order to be acceptable, these degradations (image quality) must be compatible with all the potential uses of the images. It is then very important to consider the whole image chain (from the sensor to the on-ground post-processing) to optimize image compression and for each space mission it is necessary to solve the trade-off between image quality versus compression ratio.

Compound (or mixed) document images contain graphic or textual content along with pictures. They are a very common form of documents, found in magazines, brochures, web-sites etc. Because of the very distinct nature of those two image classes (text/graphics vs. pictures), their compression invariably involves multiple compression systems and a region segmentation (classification) method. We review state-of-the-art technologies on the subject while focusing our attention on the mixed raster content (MRC) multi-layer approach. We also present new results on segmentation for MRC based on optimized rate-distortion-based block thresholding.

This paper proposes a compression algorithm relying on a classified linear-regression prediction followed by context based modeling and arithmetic coding of the outcome residuals. Images are partitioned into blocks, e.g., 8/spl times/8 or 16/spl times/16, and a minimum mean square (MMSE) linear predictor is calculated for each block. Fuzzy clustering is utilized to reduce the number of such predictors. Given a preset number of classes, a Fuzzy-C-Means algorithm produces an initial guess of classified predictors to be fed to an iterative procedure which classifies pixel blocks simultaneously refining the associated predictors. All the predictors are transmitted along with the label of each block. Coding time is affordable thanks to fast convergence of the iterative algorithms. Decoding is always performed in real time. The compression scheme provides impressive performances, especially when applied to X-ray images.

There are three basic segmentation schemes for compound image compression: object-based, layer-based, and block-based. This paper discusses the relative advantages of each scheme and architecture, and studies the use of fast classification techniques for a segmentation that can be used together with a chosen compression architecture. Particularly, we consider classification techniques working on approximate object boundaries, which reaches the localization and precision of the segmentation, but in exchange allows faster, one-pass segmentation, low memory requirements, and segmentation map that is better matched to existing compression methods. We show numerical results obtained on a printer application environment, where rigorous standards of visual quality have to be satisfied.
