This paper proposes a compression algorithm relying on a classified linear-regression prediction followed by context based modeling and arithmetic coding of the outcome residuals. Images are partitioned into blocks, e.g., 8/spl times/8 or 16/spl times/16, and a minimum mean square (MMSE) linear predictor is calculated for each block. Fuzzy clustering is utilized to reduce the number of such predictors. Given a preset number of classes, a Fuzzy-C-Means algorithm produces an initial guess of classified predictors to be fed to an iterative procedure which classifies pixel blocks simultaneously refining the associated predictors. All the predictors are transmitted along with the label of each block. Coding time is affordable thanks to fast convergence of the iterative algorithms. Decoding is always performed in real time. The compression scheme provides impressive performances, especially when applied to X-ray images.

Summary form only given. 16-bit Asian language texts are difficult to compress using conventional 8-bit sampling text compression schemes. Recently the word-based text compression method has been studied with the intention of compressing Japanese and Chinese texts individually. In order to compress a large number of small-sized Japanese documents, such as groupware and E-mail, we applied a semi-adaptive word-based method to Japanese at DCC'98. To further enable multilingual text compression, we also applied a static word-based method to both the Japanese and Chinese texts and evaluated compression characteristics and performance using a computer simulation.

As wavelet-based image coding is set to became more widely used (e.g. with the completion of the JPEG2000 standard), memory efficiency for wavelet-based coding is becoming an increasingly important issue. In this paper we present a complete system to perform low memory wavelet image coding. Our approach is "line-based" in that the images are read line by line and only the minimum required number of lines is kept in memory. The line-based transform is combined with a low memory entropy coder that does not require any global image information. Our system achieves a large (two orders of magnitude) reduction in memory requirements compared to other available coders, with limited performance loss (e.g., less than 0.5 dB).

Summary form only given. We present an efficient algorithm for compressing the data necessary to represent an arbitrary cutting plane extracted from a three-dimensional curvilinear data set. The cutting plane technique is an important visualization method for time-varying 3D simulation results since the data sets are often so large. An efficient compression algorithm for these cutting planes is especially important when the simulation running on a remote server is being tracked or the data set is stored on a remote server. Various aspects of the visualization process are considered in the algorithm design, such as the inherent data reduction in going from 3D to 2D when generating a cutting plane, the numerical accuracy required in the cutting plane, and the potential to decimate the triangle mesh. After separating each floating point number into mantissa and exponent, a block sorting algorithm and an entropy coding algorithm are used to perform lossless compression.

In recent years, substantial progress has been achieved in the area of volume visualization on irregular grids, which is mainly based on tetrahedral meshes. Even moderately fine tetrahedral meshes consume several mega-bytes of storage. For archivation and transmission compression algorithms are essential. In scientific applications lossless compression schemes are of primary interest. This paper introduces a new lossless compression scheme for the connectivity of tetrahedral meshes. Our technique can handle all tetrahedral meshes in three dimensional euclidean space even with non manifold border. We present compression and decompression algorithms which consume for reasonable meshes linear time in the number of tetrahedra. The connectivity is compressed to less than 2.4 bits per tetrahedron for all measured meshes. Thus a tetrahedral mesh can almost be reduced to the vertex coordinates, which consume in a common representation about one quarter of the total storage space. We complete our work with solutions for the compression of vertex coordinates and additional attributes, which might be attached to the mesh.

A novel compression algorithm for fingerprint images is introduced. Using wavelet packets and lattice vector quantisation, a new vector quantisation scheme based on an accurate model for the distribution of the wavelet coefficients is presented. In the new algorithm, no assumptions are made about the lattice parameters and no training and multi-quantising are required. The proposed algorithms achieve the best rate-distortion performance by adapting to the statistical characteristics of the source image in each sub-image. Compared to other available image compression algorithms, the proposed algorithms result in higher quality reconstructed images for identical bit rates.

A universal algorithm to compress multi-dimensional data is presented. Besides being able to explore multidimensional correlations of the data, it incorporates two other fundamental innovations when compared to its predecessors, the Lossy Lempel-Ziv (LLZ) and Hierarchical String Matching algorithms: first, instead of building a dictionary of strings to match the data, it builds a dictionary of basis functions in which the data will be decomposed in the spirit of Mallat's matching pursuits; second, any basis function in the dictionary can be dilated or contracted when used to match the data. Simulation results show that it has good coding performance for a large class of image data. With Gaussian sources it has shown good performance, outperforming LLZ algorithms for low data rates, being close to the R(D). With real image data, when LLZ fails at all rates, it has performed even better, showing a great improvement over LLZ.

Speech processed with amplitude compression can maintain high levels of intelligibility over a wide range of compression parameter values. The perceived quality of the speech, however, varies widely over this parameter range, especially in the presence of low-level background noise. The present work provides data showing that both normal-hearing listeners and listeners with impairments prefer low compression ratios and long time constants in two-channel compression processing. In addition, we describe a quantitative model linking the release time and compression ratio of the two-channel compression system to the preference judgments of normal-hearing and hearing impaired listeners.

A new lossy compression algorithm is proposed which, unlike most conventional techniques, gives the user control over the distribution of the inherent compression-induced error over various components of the scene. This technique effectively allows features of interest in the image to be coded at a relatively higher precision level (bit rate) than the nonessential features. This approach minimizes the impact of lossy compression on the "final product" domain. The compression technique is based on a modified linear pixel unmixing procedure followed by standard JPEG algorithm. Each spectrum in the data set is modeled as a linear combination of a finite number of spectrally distinct signatures referred to as end-members. The end-members are selected via a modified ISODATA clustering algorithm which uses the spectral angle criterion, instead of the Euclidean distance criterion. The resulting end-members are more likely to correspond to identifiable physical features, i.e. species, on the ground. The concentration of each end-member in an image pixel is determined and mapped to 0-255 range. The ensemble of all pixel concentrations for each end-member forms a compositional map, known as abundance image. The resulting set of abundance images will exhibit a much smaller spectral correlation since each abundance image shows the concentration of only one species in the entire scene. Depending on the relative importance, each of the resulting abundance images are then coded via standard JPEG at preset quality levels. The preliminary results are very encouraging.

A platform and methodology for real time systems on chip prototyping is presented. The JPEG case study is presented as an example of prototyping. The proposed methodology overcomes limitations of the simulation approach and can often achieve real time validation. However, the case study highlights drawbacks of the prototyping platform and points out some remaining work to make prototyping more effective.
