In the last few years, the discrete fractal transformation has been applied to image coding in order to obtain high compression rates. The coding scheme works by dividing an image into range blocks that are approximated, through a contractive fractal transformation, by lowpass filtered versions of the domain blocks selected in the image itself. It is reported by Fisher (1994) that using eventually contractive fractal transformations one can improve the compressed image quality. However, no explanation is given to justify this fact. We address this issue by relating this improvement to the filtering process of the domain blocks.

In wireless communication transmission errors will occur, and if compressed digital video is used, the compression algorithm has to be error robust. This paper discusses a new technique for error robust video coding based on H.263. It consists of two parts. Firstly, the reference frame, with respect to which the differential frames are coded, is not the previous frame, but a frame composed of a set of N previous reconstructed frames at the decoder. This will smooth the error and as a result the visual quality improves substantially. Secondly, at the decoder an algorithm is implemented for the detection of errors in the frame to be displayed. The positions of the corrupted macro blocks that are detected are signaled to the encoder. When the encoder receives this information, it forces intra coding of the macro blocks at these positions in some future frame, depending on the delay. This is not the same as re-transmission, since only the coding mode (intra) of some future macro block at a certain spatial position is requested. Experiments show significant improvement in error robustness and resulting quality while maintaining the same bit rate. At a bit error rate (BER) of 10/sup -4/ an improvement of 13.8 dB (PSNR) was obtained and maintained during the whole test sequence.

Our present ability to work with video has been confined to a wired environment, requiring both the video encoder and decoder to be physically connected to a power supply and a wired communication link. This paper presents a portable video-on-demand system capable of delivering high-quality image and video data in a wireless environment. The discussion will focus on both the architectural and circuit design techniques developed for implementing a high-performance, error-resistant video compression/decompression system at power levels that are two orders of magnitude below existing solutions. This low-power video compression system not only provides a compression efficiency better than industry standards, but also embeds a high degree of error tolerance in the compression algorithm itself to guard against transmission errors often encountered in wireless communication.

A new method is proposed for efficient SNR scalability in predictive video coding. It is of low complexity, and it is applicable to standard DCT-based video compression with motion compensation. Information that is only available to the enhancement layers is exploited to improve the quality of their frame prediction without compromising the usefulness of the compressed data provided by the base layer(s). More specifically, the next frame prediction for use by an enhancement-layer decoder is obtained by combining, or switching between transform coefficients from: i) the reconstructed base-layer frame; and ii) the predicted enhancement-layer frame. The combining rule depends on the compressed residual of the base layer, and on the parameters used for this compression. The method is applied to standard DCT-based predictive video coding, and preliminary simulation shows consistent, substantial improvement in the performance of enhancement layers. The proposed method may be easily combined with known temporal scalability methods to provide further improvement of the performance of enhancement layers over a wide range of bit rates.

In the H.263 Version 2 (H.263+) coding standard, the global motion compensation can be introduced by using Reference Picture Resampling (Annex. P) syntax. Such an application requires that the global motion parameters be estimated automatically. We propose a global motion estimation algorithm based on the Taylor expansion equation and robust regression technique using probabilistic thresholding. The experimental results confirm that the proposed algorithm can improve both the coding efficiency and the quality of motion compensation on sequences involving camera movement.

In multimedia environments, digital artwork is usually exhibited on many types of media with different sizes and resolutions. For this reason, it is desirable that artists create works of art in a resolution independent way. We present an algorithm for resolution independent unrealistic imaging. To realize resolution independent imaging, characteristics of all brush strokes are coded and saved in a characteristic table. From the characteristic table, images of any size and resolution can be created. This characteristic table gives our algorithm the ability to create many types of artistic expression. Three different expressions are exhibited. In particular the expression in which contours are drawn by pen and ink then colored by brush is, we believe, a new type of expression in computer artwork. Another feature of our algorithm is that the shape of a brush stroke is not set, but is adaptively changed: a less mechanical pattern which seems more natural to humans. As for aesthetic evaluation, we do not have a proper evaluation method, but if an image created using this algorithm won an award for digital creation, that would be an indication of the algorithm's success.

Text and picture segmentation by the distribution analysis of wavelet coefficients

This paper presents an algorithm to segment text and picture in an image using two features based on the statistical distribution of the wavelet coefficients in high frequency bands. The algorithm breaks the image into blocks and classifies every block as background, text or picture according to the two features. The block size is variable so that the segmentation can be accurate at the boundary of two types and avoids misclassifying due to over-localized region analysis.

MPEG-2 is an international standard defining compression algorithms for video and audio. Additionally, the standard defines a packet and cell oriented transmission system for the resulting digital streams. This system has been used as a local network to carry Internet traffic over a direct broadcast satellite. Applications have been developed for either unicast or multicast services from a base station server to a group of receiving clients. Inexpensive integrated receiver/decoder cards are used which contain a complete RF receiver, demodulator and decoder and interface directly to the PC bus. The paper describes the encapsulation and the implementation of a prototype system based on the European DVB standards which has been operational since early 1997. It then discusses some of the design decisions and suggests a generic encapsulation mechanism for future data and multimedia applications using MPEG-2 as a transport system.

The performance of several reversible decorrelating transforms is evaluated in the JPEG-2000 baseline system. All of these transforms are based on tree-structured filter banks. Through the analysis of lossy and lossless compression results, a reversible version of the Cohen-Daubechies-Feauveau (2, 2) wavelet transform is found to perform best overall. A reversible version of a subband transform developed by Balasingham and Ramstad (see Proc. of 31st Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers, Monterey, CA, USA, 1997.) is also found to work particularly well for textured images.

compression of digital electrocardiogram (ECG) signals has traditionally been tackled by heuristical approaches. It has been demonstrated that exact optimization algorithms outclass these heuristical approaches by a wide margin with respect to the reconstruction error. As opposed to traditional time-domain algorithms, where some heuristic is used to extract representative signal samples from the original signal, the exact optimization algorithm proposed by Haugland, Heber and Husoy (see Medical & Biological Engineering & Computing, vol.35, p.420-24, 1997) formulates the sample selection problem as a graph theory problem. Thus well known optimization theory can be applied in order to yield optimal compression. Haughland et al. applied linear interpolation in the reconstruction of the signal. This paper generalizes the optimization algorithm such that reconstruction can be made by second order polynomial interpolation in the extracted signal samples. The polynomials are fitted in a way that guarantees minimal reconstruction error, and the method proves the good performance compared to the case where linear interpolation is used in the reconstruction of the signal.
