High-throughput data-bus systems are crucial for recent high-performance computing, especially for data intensive computing. The effective throughput can be improved by applying a lossless data compression with high-throughput codec. This paper proposes a lossless data compression codec using a simple context-base coding. Simulation results of compression ratio show that, compared to existing low-latency compression methods, the proposed method can achieve comparable compression ratios for many benchmark data sets with simple codec structure.

Nowadays the digital universe becomes larger and larger. The data created every year has been up to ZB level. How to store the data in many normal servers is a critical issue. Although a distributed file system alleviates the storage problem, there is still a need to reduce the storage and speed up transmission of largescale data. The distributed file system like HDFS already offers compression schemes to cater to the need, however, when the workload and data format change, configuring the compression with only one kind of algorithm is not always effective. In this paper, we proposed a model called PACM (Prediction-based Auto-adaptive compression Model) to optimize the storage and performance by using different algorithms, e.g. quicklz, zlib, snappy according to variable data format and workload. We also implemented the model inHadoop and our empirical evaluation shows that by using PACM, the write throughput has been improved by 2-5 times.

Facing large scale of data sets, disk I/O seems still one of the bottlenecks in DBMS. In the mean time, the CPU resource is not fully utilized. So compression is introduced to take use of the computing resource and largely reduces the storage overhead. Also, the commonly used compression algorithm can improve the performance when the database runs on HDD. With SSD, however, the performance for both read and write could be negatively affected by the slow process of compression and decompression. By quantitatively analyzing the impact of compression, we proposed a balanced compression solution on SSD, in which the read performance is accelerated by using a compression algorithm (lz4hc) with an extreme high decompression speed and an asynchronous compression mechanism is introduced to reduce the write latency by moving compression to the background. We test the performance on the real data set collected from the online database systems in Baidu. The results show the read performance on SSD is improved by 25% compared to the uncompressed database and 36% compared with commonly used zlib compression. Meanwhile, the write performance is up to 20% and 33% better than the synchronous compression on lz4hc and zlib.

In this paper, we propose a lossless Quality Scores compression methods of FASTQ file format which is commonly used to store the NGS (Next Generation Sequencing). Instead of elaborating excellent data structure and compression technique based on the original FASTQ Quality Scores file, we try to change the distribution of original FASTQ Quality Scores file through linear combination prediction so as to make it better for further compression, using existing compression algorithms. Experimental results indicate that our compression method outperforms other four state-of-the-art compression tools and achieves up to 10% improvement in compression ratio comparing with the one in the second place and up to 35% over Gzip both on on all test datasets.

Text messages are generally encoded by performing table look-up on fixed length code tables. In this paper, a lossless text compression algorithm which works on the principle of entropy reduction is proposed. Characters in a text message in any language are generally encoded using a binary string with a Unique Lexicographical Rank (ULR). A corresponding Maximum Rank(MR) for any binary string can be computed using lexicographical permutation. Reducing the MR of the binary string results in considerable reduction in the number of bits to be transmitted. MR reduction is achieved in this work by using character frequency based encoding models. Uni-gram, bi-gram and tri-gram models are used herein. Experiments on text compression are conducted on the Calgary Corpus and Project Gutenberg databases. Experiments on text compression are conducted on the Calgary and The Project Gutenberg corpus. Results indicate a significant increase in compression ratio.

Modern Biotechnology produces large amount of genomic data. The explosion of DNA data has given a challenge for understanding genomic structure, the disk storage and computation. It is essential for the development of efficient compression techniques to handle genomic data storage. Data compression is used to store the data in less memory. The properties of DNA sequence offer a chance to build DNA specific compression algorithms. In this paper, a novel compression technique is proposed for genomic data. In the first stage, each base in DNA sequence is converted into binary form using 2-bit encoding system. On the resultant binary string, A Modified run length encoding is applied. The output is compressed again using Huffman encoding technique in second stage. The encoded sequence is converted into ASCII characters. This technique is quite simple and effective.

This paper presents a new video compression algorithm with improved compression performance. The proposed algorithm works with any existing compression algorithm to provide added compression. This kind of series application of algorithm with existing algorithms provides flexibility it terms of implementation and integration with existing products. The concept proposed in this paper uses the concept of quadrature carrier multiplexing in the digital domain to compress alternate frames on quadrature digital virtual carriers to reduce the size of the video. Since the algorithm is generic it can be applied to any packets or chunks of data. Experiments were performed to quantitatively evaluate the performance of the proposed compression algorithm. The results of the experiments showed that using the proposed algorithm with existing MPEG-4 compression yields 50% compression over MPEG-4 standard without any perceivable change in the video quality especially at higher resolutions.

Several algorithms for accurate circular target localization can be used in optical-electronic measurement systems. In this paper we examine the effects of compression artifacts on the measurement results. We consider image acquisition model of optical-electronic measurement systems and use it to compare accuracy of widely used center of gravity (CoG) algorithm in the presence of compression artifacts. Several compression algorithms are studied in order to determine their influence on the measurement results, including original algorithm for image coding with region of interest (ROI) support.

This paper proposes an improvement over Lempel-Ziv-Welch (LZW) compression algorithm by employing a new method that uses exponential decay (ED) as a tool to manage and remove infrequently used entries in the LZW dictionary. The presented results demonstrate that ED may be an efficient tool to manage and refresh the LZW dictionary. The achieved compression ratio is higher than in the traditional methods like Dictionary Reset DR and Least Recently used LRU. The experimental results demonstrate that the dictionary refresh by the ED may provide higher compression ratio, compared with the original LZW algorithm. In order to investigate the benefits of ED method, it is compared with some other way of LRU-based enhancements. In particular, we consider a LRU-like LZW scheme with Huffman coding of difference from last used word.

The development of a neurologically-oriented mobile health system involves significant challenges in terms of the proper sensing and efficient transmission of electroencephalogram (EEG) signals, and the faithful reconstruction of these signals at the receiving node. EEG compression has been widely used to reduce storage requirements, improve the real time processing of the sensed signals, and provide a better and timely feedback to the concerned patients. The non-stationarity of the EEG signals and the large volumes of data being continuously processed mandate the development of data reduction schemes that provide a good tradeoff between compression performance and the preservation of the signal quality and integrity. To this end, we propose in this work a dynamic and effective compression approach for EEG data that relies on a sequence of compression and decompression phases to optimize the compression rate while maintaining a distortion level below a target threshold. Simulation results using real EEG data segments show that even with stringent quality requirements, a notable compression ratio can be attained with minimal processing overhead.
