Energy efficiency is one of the most important design metrics for wireless sensor networks. As sensor data always have redundancies, compression is introduced for energy savings. In this paper, a lightweight compression algorithm for data with spatial correlation is proposed, which can be implemented on resource constrained nodes to reduce the total energy costs in the whole networks. By adopting pipelining and introducing partial computation, our method achieves a little inter-sensor communication expenditure, and it can reduce energy costs while still keep a good distortion. The simulation results show that, compared with the wavelet compression scheme, the algorithm obtains more energy savings under the same distortion rate.

The CPU has become a bottleneck for bigdata solutions that have to deal with increasingly large and varied data. Two approaches for dealing with this bottleneck have generated considerable interest amongst researchers in the recent past. The first approach is the building of heterogeneous systems that offload a part of the computational workload to co-processors. The offload of a part of the computation to a co-processor causes CPU cycles to be freed up. These freed-up CPU cycles can then be used for running other tasks. Offloading also allows the building of accelerated solutions that run significantly faster. Thus, offloading allows the processing of larger workloads by the system. The second approach that has generated interest is the compression of data. The storage and network latencies for bigdata solutions are reduced significantly when data compression techniques are employed. The associated bandwidth requirements too are reduced, as are the hardware requirements. However, a marriage of the two approaches - compression on a co-processor - has remained a challenge due to the inherent characteristics of the compression algorithms that have made them poor choices for implementation on co-processors such as GPGPUs. In this paper, an implementation of the popular bzip2 compression algorithm that utilizes a GPGPU for a part of its computing is presented. A marginal improvement of 1.4x in performance when compared to the standard CPU-based algorithm is delivered by this implementation, while freeing up CPU cycles by a significant 50% at the same time. This speedup is better than any previously published work. The challenges in getting a good performance for bzip2 on a GPU are discussed.

Efficient retrieval of traffic archival data is a must-have technique to detect network attacks, such as APT(advanced persistent threat) attack. In order to take insight from Internet traffic, the bitmap index is increasingly used for efficiently querying over large datasets. However, a raw bitmap index leads to high space consumption and overhead on loading indexes. Various bitmap index compression algorithms are proposed to save storage while improving query efficiency. This paper proposes a new bitmap index compression algorithm called BAH (Byte Aligned Hybrid compression coding). An acceleration algorithm using SIMD is designed to increase the efficiency of AND operation over multiple compressed bitmaps. In all, BAH has a better compression ratio and faster intersection querying speed compared with several previous works such as WAH, PLWAH, COMPAX, Roaring etc. The theoretical analysis shows that the space required by BAH is no larger than 1.6 times the information entropy of the bitmap with density larger than 0.2%. In the experiments, BAH saves about 65% space and 60% space compared with WAH on two datasets. The experiments also demonstrate the query efficiency of BAH with the application in Internet Traffic and Web pages.

Wireless sensor networks are widely applied in data collection applications. Energy efficiency is one of the most important design goals. In this paper, we propose QAAC, Quality-Assured Adaptive data compression, to reduce the amount of data communication so that to save energy. QAAC first builds clusters from dataset using an adaptive clustering algorithm; then a code for each cluster is generated and stored in a Huffman encoding tree, which is used to encode the original dataset in an encoding algorithm with improvement approach. After the encoded data, the Huffman encoding tree and parameters used in the improvement algorithm have been received at the sink, a decompression algorithm is used to retrieve the approximation of the original dataset. The performance evaluation shows that QAAC is efficient and achieves much higher compression ratio than compared lossy and lossless compression algorithms and much less information loss than compared lossy compression algorithms.

We introduce a compression technique for small polygons. The main application is to embed compressed polygons in emergency alert messages that have strict length restrictions, as in the case of Wireless Emergency Alert messages. We transform polygon coordinates to sets of integers and are able to compress them to between 10.4% and 25.6% of original length reducing original polygon lengths from 43-331 characters to 9-61 characters. The compression technique introduced in this work takes advantage of a strongly skewed polygon coordinate distribution.

A duration of century past over to the invention of electrocardiogram (ECG) but even today also electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring is playing its important role of help to take care of patients having cardiac diseases. Electrocardiogram (ECG) data compression is important for portable solutions, for reducing the storage requirements and low power consumption. Large variety of ECG compression algorithms and their implementation have been proposed in literature till date. Selection of the appropriate ECG compression technique needs important considerations such as storage requirements and communication link utilization. Further power consumption and chip area requirements depend on the computational complexity of ECG compression algorithm. Thus identifying suitable ECG compression technique for the given application requirements remains a big challenge from implementation point of view. Review of the different ECG compression techniques and ECG compression implementations available in literature is presented in this paper, which can be helpful for identifying suitable technique for application specific requirements.

In smart grids, both, low-frequency and high-frequency measurements are performed in households for a variety of use cases. While several compressibility studies of this data have been conducted in the literature, lossless compression of high-frequency data has not yet been covered. In this paper, high-frequency voltage and current data is processed with a selection of low-complexity compression algorithms to find that the data are not equally compressible. Further, it is found that the compression performance varies with resolution as well as between households and data sets. Nonetheless, the use of compression is practically viable for the current channels of the evaluated data sets at 16 and 50 kHz, respectively.

Ultrasonic imaging applications require real-time acquisition and processing of huge volume of data. Subsequently, reducing the data storage becomes an essential requirement for applications involving ultrasound technology. compression of the acquired data significantly reduces the storage and also helps in faster data processing. Furthermore, computationally efficient data compression enables real-time data transfer to remote locations for expert analysis. In this study, an efficient implementation of ultrasonic data compression based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is realized on GeForce GT 750M NVIDIA graphical processing unit (GPU) using Open Computing Language (OpenCL). Execution of OpenCL program on GPU allows parallel computing of the compression algorithm to accelerate the computational performance. This study demonstrates that OpenCL implementation of ultrasonic compression algorithm on GPU requires only 0.29 seconds for compressing 33 Mbytes of ultrasonic data into 6.6 Mbytes (80% compression), which makes it suitable for real-time ultrasonic imaging applications.

Internet is evolving. How the content is generated has changed and currently, users and readers of a site can create content. They can express themselves showing their feelings or opinions commenting diverse stories or other users' comments in social news websites. This fact has led to negative side effects: the appearance of troll users and their contents seeking deliberately controversy. In this paper we propose a new method to filter trolling comments using compression models. Normally, Vector Space Model representation use is quite common but these filters can be attacked. To this end, we validate our approach with data from 'Meneame', a popular Spanish social news site, training several compression models, showing that our method can maintain high accuracy rates whilst making such filters difficult to defeat.

A power-efficient modular wireless platform has been designed for prototyping and pre-clinical evaluations of neural recording implants. This Kit for Designing Implants (KDI) is separated in function specific modules of 34x34mm which can be assembled as needed. This paper presents the design of new modules for this existing wireless KDI platform. These modules cover the functionalities of electrical stimulation for BCI neurofeedback, impedance spectroscopy for monitoring tissue reaction around implanted electrodes and a real-time lossless data compression algorithm for ECoG signals. This algorithm has been implemented using two different hardware solutions and its performances compared. The design and evaluation of these modules are a first step towards the inclusion of these functionalities into the next generation of WIMAGINE (R) implants.
