In recent years, finding repetitive similar patterns in time series has become a popular problem. These patterns are called time series motifs. Recent studies show that using grammar compression algorithms to find repeating patterns from the symbolized time series holds promise in discovering approximate motifs with variable length. However, grammar compression algorithms are traditionally designed for string compression. Therefore, existing work on grammar induction has not fully utilized much available information that can be used to enhance the performance of the algorithms. In this work, an iterative framework based on grammar induction is proposed. In each iteration, a revision operator called Noise Reduction Operator is applied to revise the symbolized time series string based on the rules returned from a base grammar induction algorithm. In our experiments, we show that the proposed work can find motifs of the same quality, with much faster running time compared to the state-of-the-art variable-length exact motif discovery algorithm in real world time series data.

This paper presents an acquisition system design integrated with the Arduino Nano platform and commercial ICs for the prototype development of a portable ECG signal monitor. A simply lossless ECG compression algorithm with a better compression Ratio (CR) is employed to reduce a great amount of storage and transmission recording data. The result proves that the CR averages are 2.53 for ECG test patterns from MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The experimental result also shows a pure ECG signal can be easily acquired by using a 16-tap low-pass digital filter. Therefore, the proposed design would be a good choice for the application of ECG signal acquisition in the future.

Network security is becoming more and more important because there is a lot of anomaly traffic information in some websites such as online education. In order to detect the anomaly traffic effectively, we can use some cloud computing tools such as Hadoop. For the sake of good performance of Hadoop, we need to do performance tuning. This paper mainly focused on the two aspects of performance tuning: 1. This paper deeply researched the phases of Hadoop (like Map and Reduce) and the effective of Hadoop had been greatly improved with the help of performance tuning. 2. This paper pointed out a compressed Trie algorithm to replace the hash table during the map phase and solved the problem of low efficiency.

This paper presents a method for improving the performance of the compression algorithm recommended by CCSDS, operating with mutlicomponent images on lossy mode. The proposed method uses: KLT as the transform coding, an algorithm for distribute maximum bit rate between image components to maximize the PSNR, and a transport mechanism for transform coding coefficients. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, images captured by the CCD camera of CBERS-2B were used. It was observed that the proposed method presents gains that can be of the order of 5 [dB] compared to the recommended algorithm being used to encode each image component independently. Furthermore, the results obtained demonstrate that the use of a fixed operator results in a performance close to that achieved by a computed transformation operator for each picture to be coded, for rates between 2 and 4 bit per pixel. © 2015 IEEE.

The compression is required to reduce the size of data to store in computer storage as well as to transmit data over the internet with limited bandwidth. The genomic sequences DNA or RNA contain billions of nucleotide bases (A, G, T, C) resulting large sized file to store in computer. In the previous compression algorithms the authors use direct coding technique where two bits are used to code a nucleotide base resulting compression ratio of 2 bits per byte (bpb). Some authors achieve a compression ratio less than 2 bpb after coding repeated bases differently. In this paper we proposed an improvement over direct coding technique that will compress both repeated and non-repeated sequences. The proposed algorithm provides better result as compared to existing algorithms. The existing direct coding algorithm compresses the non-repeated base (B) by prefixing a 0 followed by 2 bits code assigned for that base (i.e. 0B) whereas the repeated bases are compressed by prefixing 1 followed by 2 bits code assigned for that base (B) followed by 3 bits code to represent the number of repetitions (N) (i.e. 1BN). The non-repeated bases are coded by 3 bits and repeated bases by 6 bits but the existing algorithm is limited to compress the repeated sequence till 9 because of 3 bits coding. If the repeated sequence is greater than 9 then it requires a number of bits in multiple of 6 (i.e. 6, 12, and 18, so on). The propped algorithm compress the repeated base by making an improvement over existing one that will code a repeated sequence greater than 9 but less than 15 by prefixing 1 followed by base (B) followed by 111 followed by N (i.e. 1B111N) in 9 bits in place of 12 bits in existing algorithm hence the proposed algorithm provide better compression ratio.

Most of the world's digital data is currently encoded in a sequential form, and compression methods for sequences have been studied extensively. However, there are many types of non-sequential data for which good compression techniques are still largely unexplored. This paper contributes insights and concrete techniques for compressing various kinds of non-sequential data via arithmetic coding, and derives re-usable probabilistic data models from fairly generic structural assumptions. Near-optimal compression methods are described for certain types of permutations, combinations and multisets, and the conditions for optimality are made explicit for each method.

This paper has the purpose of describing a new approach on firmware update on automotive ECUs. The firmware update process for certain automotive ECUs requires excessive time through the CAN bus. By using the delta flashing concept, firmware update time can be greatly reduced by reducing the quantity of the data that is transmitted over the network.

Probability estimation is an elementary building block of every statistical data compression algorithm. In practice probability estimation should be adaptive, recent observations should receive a higher weight than older observations. We present a probability estimation method based on exponential smoothing that satisfies this requirement. Our main contribution is a theoretical analysis for various smoothing rate sequences: We show that the redundancy w.r.t. A piecewise stationary model with s segments is O (s n0.5) for any bit sequence of length n, an improvement over previous approaches with a similar complexity.

Rating a compression algorithm's performance is usually done in experimental studies, where researchers have frequently used JPEG pre-compressed data. It is not clear yet, whether results of such compression experiments are reliable if conducted from pre-compressed data. To investigate this issue, we study the impact of using pre-compressed data on iris segmentation and evaluate the relation between iris segmentation performance and general quality metrics. Furthermore we propose a method to overcome potential problems in case using pre-compressed data sets cannot be avoided, e.g. for reasons of ground-truth availability.
