The purpose of musical analysis is to find the best possible explanations for musical objects, where such objects may range from single chords or phrases to entire musical corpora. Kolmogorov complexity theory suggests that the best possible explanation for an object is represented by the shortest possible description of it. Two compression algorithms, COSIATEC and SIATECCOMPRESS, are described that take point-set representations of musical objects as input and generate compressed encodings of these point sets as output. The algorithms were evaluated on a task in which 360 folk songs were classified into tune families using normalized compression distance, a 1-nn classifier and leave-one-out cross-validation. COSIATEC achieved a success rate of 84% on this task, compared with a success rate of 13% for a general-purpose compressor. Variants of the algorithms incorporating modifications that have been suggested in the literature were also run on the task and the results were compared.

In this paper, novel proof of retrieval (POR) and proof of ownership (POW) protocols for images based on the use of the SPIHT compression algorithm are proposed. The POR protocol can be run by the users to ensure that their images are stored securely in the cloud, and the POW protocol can be run by the cloud storage provider (CSP) to authenticate the true owner of the images. The efficiency of our scheme relies on the fact that only a fraction of the compressed data is used for encoding the images. Experimental results are provided to validate the stated goals.

This paper presents a novel methodology for generating and compressing configuration bitstreams for modules that can be executed at different positions of an FPGA. The presented methodology for bitstream generation and compression does not need deep knowledge of the bitstream format and it is independent of the target (Xilinx) FPGA family. The approach consists of a design phase where partial bitstreams are decomposed into sequences of module dependent and module independent pieces of configuration data. At run-time, this data can then be recomposed for the individual placement positions by a special DMA configuration controller as one atomic operation without any further software interaction. Our experiments demonstrate that module relocation and fast partial reconfiguration can be implemented at low logic cost.

Many of the ultrasonic NDE and imaging applications require processing of huge amount of data in real-time. compression of acquired data helps to reduce the storage and to rapidly transmit information to remote locations for further analysis. Signal fidelity, computational speed and resource utilization are the major parameters to be considered while designing the architecture for the compression algorithm. The objective of this study is to implement discrete wavelet transform (DWT) based ultrasonic 3D data compression algorithm on a reconfigurable ultrasonic system-on-chip hardware platform targeted for real-time ultrasonic imaging applications. The reconfigurable platform allows analysis of multiple architectures to suit various applications. The algorithm is implemented as a hardware-only design and hardware-software co-design. Both implementations provide a high signal compression ratio of about 98% with good quality signal reconstruction. This study demonstrates that, compressing 33 MBytes of experimental ultrasonic 3D data into 0.4 MBytes requires only one-fourth of a second for hardware-only design, and one minute for hardware-software co-design, making both designs highly suitable for real-time ultrasonic imaging applications.

Real-time monitoring, providing the real-time status information of servers, is indispensable for the management of distributed systems, e.g. failure detection and resource scheduling. The scalability of fine-grained monitoring faces more and more severe challenges with scaling up distributed systems. The real-time compression which suppresses remote information update to reduce continuous monitoring cost is a promising approach to address the scalability problem. In this paper, we present the Linear compression Algorithm (LCA) which is the application of the linear filter to real-time monitoring. To our best knowledge, existing work and LCA only explores the correlations of values of each single metric at various times. We present a novel lightweight REal-time compression Algorithm (ReCA) which employs discovery methods of the correlation among metrics to suppress remote information update in distributed monitoring. The compression algorithms mentioned above have limited compression power because they only explore either the correlations of values of each single metric at various times or that among metrics. Therefore, we propose the Mixed compression Algorithm (MiCA) which explores both of the correlations to achieve higher compression ratio. We implement our algorithms and an existing compression algorithm denoted by CCA in a distributed monitoring system Ganglia and conduct extensive experiments. The experimental results show that LCA and ReCA have comparable compression ratios with CCA, that MiCA achieves up to 38.2%, 27% and 44.5% higher compression ratios than CCA, LCA and ReCA with negligible overhead, respectively, and that LCA, and ReCA can both increase the scalability of Ganglia about 1.5 times and MiCA can increase about 2.33 times under a mixed-load circumstance.

The properties of DNA sequences offer an opportunity to develop DNA specific compression algorithm. A lossless two phase compression algorithm is presented for DNA sequences. In the first phase a modified version of Run Length Encoding (RLE) is applied and in the second phase the resultant genetic sequences is compressed using ASCII values. Using ASCII codes for eight bits ensures one-fourth compression irrespective of repeated or non-repeated behavior of the sequence and modified RLE technique enhances the compression further more. Not only the compression ratio of the algorithm is quite encouraging but the simple technique of compression makes it more interesting.

Due to the growing demand for large memories, using emerging technologies such as Phase Change Memories (PCM) are inevitable. PCM with appropriate scalability, power consumption and multiple bits per cell storage capability is a probable candidate for substituting DRAM. Although storing multiple bits per cell seems to be a rational response to large memory demands, there is a significant problem to achieve this goal. Resistance drift problem is an important reliability concern that is coupled to a multi-level cell PCM (MLC PCM) memory system. In this paper, we propose a memory system architecture that, by exploiting the benefits of compression, converts resistance drift prone blocks to drift resilient blocks in order to protect the memory system from resistance drift. Evaluations on a full-system simulator, consisting of a quad-core ALPHA CMP and a banked PCM memory, show that our proposed approach provides up to 9.8× reduction in bit error rate, an average of 8% reduction in energy consumption, and 21% IPC improvement.

With the development of modern computer technology, the growth of purchase funds for storage equipment is far behind the growth of data. How to effectively use the limited storage resources to store data becomes the focus of our research and the data compression technology is the key to solve this problem. The traditional compression technology on the CPU platform could not meet the requirements for processing massive data in the compression rate and the energy cost. The GPU provides a new solution for its strong parallel computation ability. In this paper we present an implementation of Parallel Matching Lempel-Ziv-Storer-Szymanski (PMLZSS), a high speed lossless data compression algorithm by using CUDA framework. The basic idea of our implementation of the PMLZSS algorithm on GPUs is the introduction of a paralleled matrix matching. The data needed to be compressed are divided into multiple dictionary strings and pre-read strings as the vertical axis and horizontal axis of the matrices, respectively. All of the matrices are paralleled matched in the different blocks. Compared with the traditional serial CPU platform LZSS compression algorithm and BZIP2 compression algorithm, the experimental data shows that on the premise of the basic compression rate unchanged, relative to the serial LZSS, the compression speed of PMLZSS is improved about 16x, while to the BZIP2, about 12x.

In this paper, we study the problem of compressing a collection of sequences of variable length that allows us to efficiently add, read, or edit an arbitrary sequence without decompressing the whole data. This problem has important applications in data servers, file-editing systems, and bioinformatics. We propose a novel and practical compression scheme, which shows that, by paying a small price in storage space (3% extra storage space in our examples), we can retrieve or edit a sequence (a few hundred bits) by accessing compressed bits close to the entropy of the sequence.

Devices in mobile tactical edge networks are often resource constrained due to their lightweight and mobile nature, and often have limited access to bandwidth. In order to maintain situational awareness in the cyber domain, security logs from these devices must be transmitted to command and control sites. We present a lightweight packing step that takes advantage of the restricted semantics and regular format of certain kinds of log files to render them substantially more amenable to compression with standard algorithms (especially Lempel-Ziv variants). We demonstrate that we can reduce compressed file sizes to as little as 21% of that of the maximally compressed file without packing. We can also reduce overall compression times up to 64% in our data sets. Our packing step permits lossless transmission of larger log files across the same network transmission medium, as well as permitting existing sets of logs to be transmitted within smaller network availability windows.
